Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) - Part 1

After the critical thrashing this movie has received I'm not sure that I'm going to see this in theaters. I might not always agree with how highly they rate certain movies (Bumblebee, Captain Marvel, John Wick 3), but the rotten ratings are usually spot on. After how shallow and numbing Parabellum was I'd hate to waste time and money on a film I won't enjoy.

It's just a shame because that first trailer was legitimately fantastic; the mood and visuals were so impressive. I don't understand why filmmakers bother getting such talented actors and then give them nothing to do. What's the point of having a human cast in the first place?

I think I'll wait to see what the overall reaction is from posters here before deciding. I'd love to see this on the big screen, but there needs to be some meat to the story to justify paying for it.

Seems odd to base movie going habits on Rotten Tomatoes when you so thouroughly did not enjoy John Wick 3, which has almost 90%

This is probably one of the few times where a movie being in the 40s isn't making me nervous at all. I mean I could be wrong but even the negatives I'm hearing don't bother me.

The only thing that is making me nervous is some reviews saying the action is shot kind of close up and choppy a lot of the time. I've seen a few reviews mention that already.

I don’t really ever expect a Godzilla movie to be critically acclaimed.

Historically this is true. But that said, part of the stigma of old school Godzilla films is their "man in a suit" cheapness, and this is not really a problem this movie would have faced. The prior 2014 film got good reviews. But that said, particularly in the US, giant monster movies have always been sort of niche. Yeah, critics like some of them (mainly classics like King Kong or the original Godzilla) but mostly critics tend to not favor these types of movies all that much. It is one reason I am not shocked by the reviews, nor even worried about them when considering my likely enjoyment of this movie.

I'm treating this as a big budget remake of Ghidorah the 3 headed monster.

A part of me wishes they went all out with an Alien princess and Aliens and all that jazz. Better than generic humans and generic terrorist group with dumb plan.

Like I said, most of the films that receive a rotten rating I feel deserve it. I just don't always agree when certain movies receive almost universal acclaim. The reason why I was so disappointed by Parabellum (and JW2 to a lesser extent) was because the first movie was so well rounded and its approach to action so fresh. By the third film the filmmakers seem content with resting on their laurels, and the action isn't varied enough to make up for the one-dimensional characters.

When it comes to the MonsterVerse I'm not expecting Scorsese or Spielberg, but it needs to have more to it than the typical Transformers film. I actually enjoyed the Godzilla '14 quite a bit, and Skull Island was fun enough for what it was. All I'm asking is for it not to be worse than the previous two entries. That said, I've never finished any of the classic Godzilla films so this may just be one of those franchises that doesn't interest me. I won't know until I hear how it stacks up to G'14 & K:SI.

Just go full on cheese with it from now on. Bring on the Xiliens!

I like the goofiness of the xiliens in monster zero more but the battles of Ghidorah the 3 headed are much better.

I kind of feel bad for Daugherty right now regardless of the quality of the final product, you could tell he was passionate the material.

Yeah, BO is all that will matter at the end of the day. If this performs well internationally, and early tracking over seas is promising, then he will be fine. It just seems like the US haul may not be great.
