Godzilla vs Kong (2021)

I think a lot of it has to do with sound design quite honestly. That might be what sone of you are reacting to. The CGI in this was just as good as Pacific Rim. Kong and Godzilla looked insanely well detailed and they didnt hide their features in dark rainy settings like the prior films (except Skull Island). Pacific Rim had tremendous sound design ao you really felt the weight of the mechas when they walked through a city

No. It’s not just sound design. I already explained it.

They were mostly shot from the vantage of man. Rather than from the perspective of the monsters. That preserved the sense of awe. This is why they were super duper slow. Becuase that’s the speed at which these massive titans would move from our perspective.

In this movie the camera followed their perspective. So their speed was more attuned to what we see in a human fight. The director should’ve sped up the rest of the world. That would’ve been interesting.

the fights in this film is more similar to Pacific Rim 2.

That was awesome loved it. Gave me exactly what I wanted that these films deliver. Great visual FX, monsters, fights, destruction and mythology and lore around them. That’s what I’m in for and I get it every time  Also really enjoyed Junkie’s score. I of course would love for the Monsterverse to continue.

Hollow Earth was sick and Mecha G was awesome

This was a mixed bag. The human characters once again mostly deliver exposition but at least they aren’t irritating. That’s good enough to make the non-monster fighting scenes tolerable. Unfortunately, I didn’t like the plot at all. It had too many moving parts (the hollow Earth and Mecha-Godzilla/cybernetic stuff really didn’t need to be here imo) and it seemed like things were either purposely rushed or scenes were cut out to shorten the run time. The studio execs must’ve thought that Kong and Godzilla weren’t enough so MechaGodzilla was shoehorned in and to me it didn’t work.

More like they paid for 5 monsters. Only used 4 so far. No guarantee of more movies, gotta use him.

This is really an issue about style. Some will prefer one way vs another.

here the problemi idnt like maddie shouldn't chase down cosparasy thieiest that something worng with godzilla should you know that already

I wish Pacific Rim was on one of these streaming services. Been meaning to look at those movies for years.

I actually think this movie would be worse if it were longer. So the cuts were smart here. The human stuff was the most boring stuff, and in the current cut you don't miss this stuff. Bogging it down in more boring human scenes ultimately means longer wait to see monster mash. So I agree....the cuts were smart

You are damned if you do, damned if you don’t. The biggest complaint about the first two Godzilla’s was either there wasn’t enough action or the action sucked, so they made the action very clear this time around and didn’t focus on any humans during the fights and the general public seems to be eating it up. I believe there is probably a healthy middle ground, but I understand why Wingard went this way about it.

So with all that in mind, and if you're at the creative helm of this MonsterVerse, why not just start out establishing that this is a campy world where monsters, aliens and humans all coexist? They could've done that from the get-go by making all these fantastical connections but no, they wanted to focus on Cranston and Elizabeth Olsen. Now when they want to go all out, it feels rushed.

Probably because the ‘14 reboot was supposed to have a similar tone to the original film and when they eventually crossed over, it’s only natural it got less believable and more pulpy.

I haven't seen this yet, but you have a point, maybe the Studio got same feedback from test screenings.

#Releasetheextendedcut

You know I was just thinking after watching that it seemed there was a lot cut. Too many of the characters were just there and yeah I remember Henwick being cast.

I would absolutely watch an extended cut of this movie.

While there'll be debate on where this ranks in the Monsterverse, I think as far as Hollywood "Versus" films go, there'll be little argument that this is the best, right?

Godzilla vs Kong

Freddy vs Jason
Batman v Superman
Aliens vs Predator
Aliens vs Predator 2

What other vs films am I forgetting?

I agree too. If it was longer, this would've been likely critically panned like KOTM I think.

But like many here, I would absolutely welcome an extended cut.

In this article, Rebecca Hall also says that they shot more stuff on the hollow earth set piece than what was in the film. Watching it, it definitely felt like this movie was shredded in post but now reading about all these cut scenes and actors confirms it. I don’t think an extended cut will help though.
I mean...I get what you're saying but I feel like thats just something you have to make peace with regarding CGI. CGI isnt and i dont think ever will be at the point where it could replicate the "weight" of practical effects or animatronics like, say, the original Jurassic Park movies for example. I mean I think we all knew since the day this movie was announced that this was going to be a CGI monster smash fest with buildings falling down and all that. This was basically Man of Steel and The Avengers on steroids.

But like @Schlosser85 said, they did achieve that in the Gareth Edwards movie. The monsters in that movie moved slow and restrained like they weighed as heavy as they were big. So it’s not about CG vs practical. It’s about utilising CGI the right way.

I don’t even necessarily mind fast moving kaiju and mech like here or Pacific Rim: Uprising. It works both ways in different kinds of anime depending on the tone and rules of the universe. It’s just that they don’t fit in these two specific examples because of what has already been established in the preceding installments.

My head agrees with you but my heart gives the slight edge to Freddy vs Jason. That’s a guilty pleasure that I love.

I would argue the parts the problem is more that the parts they had were more expendable rather than putting the problems on the cuts themselves.

Yeah, more doesn't always mean better. The Rogue Cut is not the better version of DOFP.

GvK is a better movie, but Freddy Vs. Jason is so much damn fun IMO. I mean the acting in that movie is beyond awful, especially Monica Keena who has never had much going for her anyways outside of her hotness, but atleast you get plenty of carnage and insanely over the top fights between Freddy and Jason.

I don’t really do rankings. Just love this Monsterverse definitely want more. And I love vs films. Huge horror nerd and love Freddy vs Jason, love the first AvP. Love BvS Ultimate.

Fair enough. To each their own. I thought this was nothing like Pacific Rim Uprising, that movie was total garbage in story, visuals and action. I can understand some of the weight and movement complaints but I felt Wingard put real effort behind this to make the battles feel epic and powerful unlike whatever the Hell we got in Uprising.
