Godzilla vs Kong (2021)

Who is Destroyah and what does he have to do with the oxygen bomb?

Not sure how the Oxygen Destroyer was 'ruined' or why it would even matter to whether you could do Destoroyah. Godzilla himself has had a dozen different backstories anyway, and he's hardly the only one to be repeatedly reinterpreted. It's one of the more fun and unique aspects of the Godzilla franchise in general.

But, yeah, I'd definitely be surprised to hear Toho gave them the rights to anything more than what they've already used.

The original Oxygen Destroyer was a metaphor for nuclear weapons. A weapon of such potential destruction, the inventor killed himself with its first and only use. (Which brings up a pet peeve, Watanabi's character should have been Yamane, not Serizawa) In the MonsterVerse, it is an easter egg, that doesn't even do what is was originally portrayed to do, kill Godzilla.

In Godzilla vs Destroyah, the Oxygen Destroyer is a big thematic shadow over the film. Between the fact that Serizawa's suicide did not prevent the technology from being able to be developed, even if not weaponized at first, sort of how Japan used nuclear power. To how Destroyah is born from the only weapon to have killed Godzilla.

Sure, Destroyah is still a viable monster option to use. It has a great design, in all its forms. But it is just another monster, stripped of all its thematic trappings that I think help elevate him in peoples eyes. Little better than Spacegodzilla or Megalon.

We have no idea what this movie is. Whether it is a Kong, Godzilla, or something new movie. And I guarantee you, Toho just doesn't give monster rights. Legendary has to pay for each and every one.

Well, first of all it does do what it was originally portrayed to do. The Monarch team has to actively deliver the mother of all first aid to keep Godzilla from dying.

Secondly, just because they didn't adapt the doctor killing himself to prevent the device from being further developed doesn't mean the OD was 'ruined'. Anymore than Godzilla is 'ruined' anytime he isn't used as a metaphor for nuclear power (which is a lot of the time).

If they wanted to use Destoroyah there is, first of all, no reason they couldn't retcon the Oxygen Destroyer's more in depth backstory into the movie if they wanted to and secondly no reason they couldn't create a new and different metaphor that results in Destoroyah having the same kind of symbolic relationship with Godzilla and/or the OD anyway. It doesn't have to be exactly the same to be effective.

But, yes, as I already agreed, Toho isn't exactly generous with the rights to all the different monsters, so I would indeed be very surprised if Legendary had any legal rights to use Destoroyah at all (or any other Toho monster that we haven't already seen). I mean, GvK's success could theoretically have been a reason to consider renegotiating and maybe putting more money on the table, but I doubt it since the success of the film has at least as much to do with the conditions of the Pandemic era and the popularity of King Kong (who isn't a Toho monster) as with anything else.

I’ll admit, this movie doesn’t have much replay value for me. It’s like empty calories.

I just recorded The Guest on Showtime on my dvr but it doesn’t come on till Tuesday. Looking forward to finally watching it and this film when it comes out because I loved Godzilla vs Kong.

If Destroyah is in this movie then Arnold needs to be in it and he has to say “Destroyah” just so we can have a reasonable explanation for why he’s not just called Destroyer.

Destroyah is cool.

What else is cool tho? Biollante. But I'd prefer him for a Gzilla solo film. If ever.
