I wouldn't be surprised if they're looking at Carrey for the role of Thanos. He's a pretty big guy, a very talented actor and has an expressive, rubbery face that can convey emotion (including the Thanos "smile") through layers of makeup.

Chris Lowell is my favorite name from the latest list. Carrey would be great as Rocky IMO. I just want this decided already lol

yeah took a bit to sink-in but Lowell is a decent enough actor..also on the level of fame as Hemsworth pre-Thor

I thought the scoop was that they're looking at Carrey for a comedic role. I don't see Thanos as a comedic role.

Jim also has experience with extensive makeup..I could see him as Thanos, the idea reminds me of Tim Curry as Darkness in Legend.. might be an epic casting move.. also could use the similar forced-perspective used in Legend along with LOTR/Hobbit..

Though not exactly comedic, Thanos has usually been depicted as a guy with a big personality who really enjoys his job (even if it involves murdering half of the Universe) and is not above engaging in witty repartee with his foes. If Marvel is thinking of having Thanos pop up in multiple films, Carrey could be a perfect fit as a very talented actor looking for a high profile franchise.

OK, since I rarely post here, what are the thoughts on the folloing rumored casting choices -

Star Lord - Wes Bentley.
Groot - Adam Sandler.
Drax - Batista.
Rocket Raccon -Jim Carrey.

Gamora - ?
Thanos - ?

ya, of the names mentioned for the role, Wes, is one of the better names so far

I almost have to wonder... Is Marvel trolling us?

This movie, I swear. Two steps forward, and a zillion back!

Why? Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler are both versatile and well known actors. I've seen them both do good at drama and comedy. There's no reason for people to be up in arms about this. They're not turning Guardians of the Galaxy into a Sandler comedy and he's probably going to turn it down anyway.

I would love it if they went the makeup route for Thanos.. the Engineer in Prometheus was scary enough and shows you don't need to go full CGI/mo-cap..

Batista is not going to star in this movie, lol. And they aren't going to pay someone a Sandler-sized salary to play Groot.

Bentley is pretty bleh, Carrey as Rocket would be great

yup both can be amazing actors when they work at it.. Adam Sandler proved he can act with Punch-Drunk Love but has since focused on horrible comedies.. mostly because they make him a lot of money..even if the studios don't always make their money back.. I wouldn't mind either actors just as long as they hired solid people for Quill and Gamora.. they're going to have make a choice soon as pre-production should be starting up in the Spring..

I fear Jim Carrey a little bit because if not restrained I feel that he can be too "Jim Carrey". In his more subdued roles, I think he is great. Rocket has a chance to be the breakout character in this movie but it is going to require a balance between comedy and drama. Carrey may be a great choice.

Star Lord - John Krasinski
Rocket Raccoon - Jim Carrey
Gamora - Mila Kunis
Drax - Kevin Grevioux
Groot - Michael Rooker

Chris Lowell will be great and is the right age as Star Lord, while I think Jim Carrey will do fine as the voice actor for Groot/Rocket Racoon.

Sandler's That's My Boy bombed hard so his price might not be as high as it used to be..plus Disney can afford to pay for names.. I wouldn't be shocked if Sandler did it to increase his popularity overseas..since his films don't exactly make big bucks in other countries.. most actors who do Marvel films take pay cuts understanding their international profiles will be raised from their involvement..

I do agree with the others about Lowell - he was good on a weak season of Veronica Mars (which is still better than most television these days) and he does solid work.

Bentley was bland on American Beauty. He did okay with his brief role in Hunger Games, but still not enthused to see him on here.

I think the perceptions of Carrey and Sandler (the latter in particular) do kind of color our opinions about this casting information, even if we never see their faces and Marvel wants them solely for voice work. That being said, I'm still not down with Sandler on this. Carrey is far, far better.

Honestly, now I'm getting why Marvel's strayed away from big marquee names. The baggage you hear about someone of either Carrey or Sandler's ilk is fairly visceral. I even had to step away and think about Carrey for a little bit, I was getting flashes of "Ace Ventura: Guardians of the Galaxy" before I remembered all the dramatic work Carrey's done that I love so much (see Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Truman Show...) and the fact that he's done heavy makeup work for movies, etc.

Well, when I say "retire", I mean for our benefit, not his. So, not so much an actual retirement as much as just locking him in a coffin and dropping him to the ocean floor.

If you don't watch his movies, it's like he retired just for you!

I'd be down with Carrey but Sandler...urg I once was a fan but I he hasn't made a movie worth a **** in years and I will never forgive him for Jack & Jill. Just the thought of him doing his dumb HYAH HYAH HYAH ALLLRIIIIGHT! schtick in teh MCU pisses me off.

While I'm more of a Jim Carrey fan, I'm unsure about how his racoon would sound. So if it's going after voice alone - Adam Sandler. If it's going after the star bringing something more than just their voice - Jim Carrey. Sandler's voice just seems like would fit a racoon more. Jim Carrey though for Thanos - that would rock!!!

The thought of Sandler as Rocket just gave me an instant migraine.
