This was a great movie! I highly advise you see this in theaters!

I don't think the characters were generic. They were purposefully subversion's of generic archetypes, or at least put unique spins on them. Particularly Quill, Drax and Gamora.

Quill - The charming infamous rogue who gets the girl, kicks ass and always has a plan. But this time he was actually self delusional, no one actually knows who he is. He's a bit of an idiot who seemed more lucky than prudent.

Drax - The raging revenge seeking lunatic. Although this time he had a kinda child like naivete about him.

Gamora - The bad ass female who is proud of that fact. Well Gamora actually seems ashamed of it and wants to relinquish that moniker.
Quill is so Han Solo/Indy. His lack of notoriety isn't really that much of a difference. Heck that is very Han. Delusions of grandeur. And Han is every bit the "lucky idiot".

Drax was the bruiser, with a heart of gold.

I never got the idea that Gamora minded being a badass female. Her problem was being associated with some of the most evil beings in the entire universe. Which is most certainly not uncommon. The badass female attempting to escape her ugly past? Common as it gets really.

Hearing The Runaways "Cherry Bomb" in a comic book movie was kind of surreal.

I saw that as a play on [BLACKOUT]"Han shoots first"[/BLACKOUT], but maybe that is just me. It reminded me of a scene from Serenity, which was clearly based on the infamous scene.

Also, his [BLACKOUT]engine cutting out [/BLACKOUT]was so the MF in ESB. :D

Hmmm yea perhaps you are right. I think what distinguish's them is their personalities and basically, how they are "dressed up". Basically like the film.

It's not what the film is about, it's HOW it's about it.

I mean if you strip everything away, it's a pretty generic plot (same could be said of pretty much every blockbuster ever really). But what elevates it is the unique dressing and how everything is genuinely earned. Also, i know i've only seen it once so far, but is there any actual plot holes or leaps in the films logic? I didn't notice any. It's extremely efficient and tight.

I was happy with Thanos but I think at first it felt off to me too, BUUUT I think it is one of those things we will accept and love over time, because it WAS well done, just I think the fact we FINALLY get to put a voice and actor behind it, it just feels weird at first and we were so in love with his look in Avengers that we feel slightly dissapointed about it, but he will change in each movie he is in I imagine and for the better, I loved his voice and dialouge, all we need is a different shade of purple and we good, Whedon will most likely go more in his direction most likely.
I am already a fan. I prefer the look here to what we saw at the end of the Avengers, though I also definitely agree that it is an adjustment.

I think what makes it work so well, is that Peter and Rocket are turned up to 11, and that Groot is irresistibly adorable. Drax is also just simply hilarious. Really, when I think about it, other then Gamora, they are all really lovable. Even Drax, which I did not expect. In most other films, you'd get one of them. One of those who is so bizarre and OTT, that seeing this clash like this makes for good fun.

Also, I am still shocked with how many times they got away with saying Richard. :funny:

This movie was just pure joy. I had a blast, especially seeing it in IMAX 3D. Man, once that title card hit, especially plastered on that IMAX screen, that had to be the most surprising fit of laughter I've been in in a while. It really did feel like a giant middle finger to the people who take these things way too seriously. You have this very poignant opening scene and then all of sudden, the title sequence happens, and you know this is the film you're getting into, so you better get used to it.

I just loved all the characters with the exception of Gamora. Even Nebula was ****ing cool and interesting despite her less screen time. My only major criticism was Ronan. Marvel still needs to work on making better villains than someone who isn't named Loki.

But Gunn gets characterization. The structure was very strong in getting these people together felt very seamless and simple. And for the best.

Batista was so dry and hilarious. "I like your knife, I'm keeping it." And "Behold!" I was skeptical of this casting, so for the first time a wrestler has been cast in a high profile comic book film actually works.

Diesel as Groot and with the help of Gunn made a talking tree such an endearing character to the point when the first stinger hits, and you find yourself laughing, you can't believe this worked, like the entire movie.

Bradley Cooper as Rocket delivered on making a character that kids and adults can love. He wasn't just a Bugs Bunny type there to be laughed at because he was a talking raccoon. When you first see him in the prison naked, your inclination is to laugh, but Gunn directs it in such a way where you're not meant to. Rocket is as much as a being as anyone else on the team. He's still a charming raccoon, but you're left with something a lot more. "He called me rodent!" "And she called me vermin!"

And what can I say about Pratt as Quill? Charming, funny, likeable as always, and still such an inspired piece of casting.

I went in thinking Rocket was going to be my favorite, but at the end, it's still hard for me to choose a favorite. I just loved the entire team, Gamora included in that team, but not on her own. You could have just cast someone else for Gamora.

This movie was such a bizarre and out of the box next choice to move forward. I didn't know if this would work and hit the pulse of the mainstream audience with all its zaniness and seemingly niche way about it, but my God, when you see the movie, you totally get it. It's still zany and weird and the most different thing that Marvel has done. It not only wears that proudly, but it's executed so well that it's just a great movie. And my whole theater had a ****ing blast. I can see why Marvel chose it.

Hopefully Ant Man can do the same, but I have more faith now because this only just reminds me that Marvel does indeed have a plan. And their plan is GOOD. It's when you have great storytellers like Gunn who only compliments and adds to their plan that you create a comic book film like this.

9/10

Marvel has just killed it this summer, with the exception of the film that must not be named.

That's a good observation, I missed that one. Since I missed it, I don't see it as an obvious shout out :-)

I guess it might be, it follows from a failed negotiation between a hero of dubious character (at the time) operating independently and nefarious forces working on behalf of powerful forces, all taking place in a Galactic backwater.

It seems obvious his look at the end of Avengers wouldn't be what we would get going forward. That was them quickly just throwing an actor in with the makeup and effects etc just to give us an idea of Thanos and things to come with that stinger. I didn't expect him to look like he did at the end of Avengers. I dunno why some are so surprised. He now basically looks like what TA concept art of him looked like. So it makes sense.

BEHOLD! Yea Drax was awesome in this. Definitely the biggest surprise for me.

And they actually had a Celestial in the movie destroying a planet. That's faith in the characters and mythos. No ***** footing around like Fox did with Galactus.

Which is why I wish they had went the extra mile back in 2012, and had the "final look" ready. But It is a small annoyance compared to the joy I will get from watching Brolin act the crap out of the role. :word:

I hear ya it would have been better obviously if they had cast Brolin from the get go and had his design all set up and ready for that stinger in TA. It's still a great exciting tease though. But now they can really build on him more from here forward with a plan so it should work out in the end.

Before seeing it i was thinking they should have him show some power. Do something.

But then, the way he was acting towards Ronan, who was enraged and blathering on about destroying Xandar... you can tell Thanos thinks destroying mere planets is simply childs business. He was kinda amused at it, like a adult smirking at a child throwing a tantrum.

I do think it would be wise to flesh him out more in phase 3 though. Give him a big sequence where i dunno, he kills Odin or Loki and collects the Tesseract or something.

I can't remember the line exactly, but the words Drax used to identify Peter during the prison break was beyond hilarious.

You mean that scary cloud Galactus, so badass :o:oldrazz:

Yeah, I wouldn't give back that tease. Also, if they cast the role back in 2012, what are the chances it would have actually been Brolin? I am very happy where we are.

Oh yeah well from here on out I def would think they'd be fleshing him out more. I mean that's the plan isn't it? Haha. Doubt that we wouldn't just see him from now until A3. He will be involved in some of the phase 3 films in some way I'm sure whether in the actual film or the after credits.

Obscurer of light. :o

I do think it was a little weird how they handled Thanos. So little, that he almost felt out of place in the story.

Also true because didn't Gunn and Whedon decide on Brolin? And GOTG at that time was just in idea stages most likely.

Yea so far it's mainly been lip service. I did like him in this film, but there is a risk Marvel is being a bit too cute with him. They need to do something big with him soon or when he eventually turns up in A3 it could be anti-climatic.

I wouldn't even mind a film based on Thanos Quest.

They will most likely do something with him before A3. I don't really think there gonna be too cute with him, you shouldn't worry so much.

It would be interesting for him to have a film himself. That would really set him apart from other villains. See things from his POV. His obsession with death that drives him. His quest to acquire the Infinity Gems.
