It really does look like McNiven and Bendis are going for a Mass Effect/Halo aesthetic, which is made all the more clear by the type of weapons they're using (photon staffs and axes...lol).
It's not a bad thing, especially since those are the properties most people associate with space opera these days, but I was hoping for more along the lines of a contemporary aesthetic without all the shiny suits and weapons. More like what we had back in the 70s and 80s where characters would wear clothing reminiscent of Earth battle rags and the weapons were just...weapons. Think the original Mobile Suit Gundam, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, or even the original Star Wars. Those are some great space operas that don't use all the gimmicky futuristic weapons and space suits...
But, I guess we'll just have to wait for another cycle before that kind of space flare is back in style.
