Guardians of the Galaxy Guardians of the Galaxy: General Discussion & Speculation Thread - Part 2

Saying the movie Drax is going to be more accessible and well liked to mass audiences is a no brainer. It's not like Guardians is a huge deal within the comic book community, let alone the mainstream. It's like when people thought Green Lantern was black for years because of the Justice League cartoon.

Next thing you'll tell me, Miles Morales isn't the original Spider-Man.

That's a hell of a prediction. A lot more than the "He'll do alright" statements I've seen so far.

How so? Considering the same people who cast him are the ones who cast Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Sebastian Stan, Don Cheadle and Jeff Bridges -- not to mention most recently Ben Kingsley, Christopher Eccleston, Frank Grillo and Chris Pratt -- I'd say they have a pretty solid track record.

I have far more faith in someone like Bautista than someone like Momoa -- who I really like as a person but has shown absolutely terrible acting in every movie role he has to speak English in.

It's not like Guardians is a huge deal within the comic book community, let alone the mainstream.

Exactly. It's not a risky property that will affect the MCU as a whole either way. So let Marvel have fun with it.

I rather they try to stick as close to the book(s) as possible. Being a fan of the actual comic books they're supposedly based on. What a silly concept I know but hey, it's how I feel.

I'd rather they make a good movie with characters that work together and further enhance the MCU. Drax's motivations and characterization in the comics is as generic and cookie-cutter as they come. If they are different from their comics counterparts for the better then I'm game, as most fans should be.

There's dedicated fandom and then stubborn fanboyism. Seems like the more accessible these films get to mass audiences there's more of the later becoming apparent within the comics community. Sad.

Its stubborn fanboyism to expect a comic book movie to be similar to the comic book its based on? That's kind of ridiculous. I don't know when appealing to the general public and making a faithful adaptation became mutually exclusive concepts. Essentially you're saying there's no way a faithful comic book adaptation can be a hit with the general public. I don't believe that's true.

I expect Guardians to be used as the entry point for all the cosmic characters and their stories. They are connected to so many that screwing up their story would indirectly affect Thanos and the other properties that will connect through them. I think Guardians will be kind of a big deal in the MCU.

I'm sure thats what they're hoping for. The cosmic side of Marvel is so extensive, they literally could have 2-3 characters becoming huge if all goes right with Guardians.

No I consider it stubborn fanboyism to automatically discount a movie or Marvel Studios as a whole for not casting the actor that "you" wanted to play a character

It looks to be the proverbial "fork" in the MCU. Feige already said it's a one-off. If it's crazy well received you can expect Phase 3 to me cosmic centric. If it's no well liked you can expect Phase 3 to be more grounded/earth based.

Who's discounting a movie based on this casting? Sure, we're disappointed and would have liked someone better but lets be honest here, Drax isn't going to make or break this movie. I don't see anyone here discounting the movie. Were not allowed to be disappointed in the casting of a movie without being "**** this movie it's going to suck!"? :o

That's my point. Who is anyone at this point to say who is "better" for the part? Does anyone not working on the movie even know how they plan to implement Drax? The people who have casted the MCU so far are much better suited for casting that part based on the needs of the film than anyone here. Saying that you/he/anyone knows what's better or best for the movie IS discounting it. Unless you're working it or have seen the finished product you're just stating what YOU want based on YOUR desires, not what's better. In my opinion, that's stubborn fanboyism.

No, that's called being a human being and having the cognitive ability to formulate an opinion.

And in my opinion, your opinion that having some doubt over casting is stubborn fanboyism is wrong.

Ok, I'm done with discussing Drax. Who do you guys think is the next piece of the puzzle to be revealed? I think you have to announce the female lead next and thats Gamora but wouldn't be shocked if we get a Rocket announcement next.

No phase will be cosmic central or Earth-based, Feige does not look at the phases like that, as he said himself. It is a "one-off" in the sense that it's not related to the Avenger, which is why they're making the film in the first place...they want the cosmic to be a thing on its own (with the exception of big villains the Avengers are known for fighting of course). Guardians may lead to other cosmic movie being launched like the Inhumans, but that doesn't mean what the phases will or will not be "cosmic" or "Earth-based", whether it's well received or not.

As for this thing with Drax, Marvel should leave him the way he is from the comics. He's that way for a reason. He has one mission and one mission only, and that is to kill Thanos. It will most likely work within the movie anyway. This doesn't mean he is a shallow character, though. He's very thoughtful and philosophical, he's just quiet and intimidating at the time. When he does talk it's for good reason. The character is fine that way.

I'd love to see The Inhumans based on Jenkins and Lee mini series. Does Marvel own their rights? They've always been clumped in with the F4.

Oh I just remembered who Poni_Boy is. Never mind.

Probably Gamora. I'm hoping we get one of these three:

1. Adrianne Palicki
2. Gemma Arterton
3. Gina Carano

Any of them would be good, I think Adrianne looks the most like Gamora though.

Yeah they own the rights. Feige name dropped them along with the Guardians and Doctor Strange way back in 2010.

Thats interesting. The Inhumans can come into play if there ever is an Annihilation based movie or related properties.

Too bad that Marvel didn't get the FF rights back. Galactus and Silver Surfer so need to show up in these cosmic movies.

How do you feel about RDJ's Tony Stark? Movie Tony is far more snarky and glib than comic book Tony, who's always been fairly serious and grounded. There's quite a departure there.

I wonder how much Fox would ask for those rights. I mean, I know they're supposedly working on a new one but it really doesn't seem like they put that much effort into the rights like they did with X-Men. They only got serious with FF when the rights were set to expire.

Not to mention
