Harvey Dent/Two-Face Thread

I feel like Eckhart was on the verge of Breaking Out (tm) since Erin Brockovich. Even compared to the names Nolan went for (Damon, Mark Ruffalo), Eckhart seems in a whole different ball park of actors.
Was Ruffalo up for Dent?

I would absolutely take Eckhart over Damon for Harvey. I think the talent gap is fairly negligible and Eckhart just feels better suited. Ruffalo is the clearly the best actor of the three and is such an intriguing choice. I actually think Ruffalo is the best actor out of the original Avengers.

Wasn't Liev Schreiber in the running to play Harvey?

I recall Ryan Philippe and Josh Lucas in talks, and Matt Damon was originally offered the role but couldn’t do it with his scheduling. Schreiber along with Hugh Jackman were also interested, it wasn’t just fancasting. Both Eckart and Ledger’s announcements popped up out of nowhere when names were being tossed around.

Ryan Philippe and Josh Lucas where absolutely never “in talks” for the role.

Pablo Schreiber, Liev's brother, would actually make a fantastic Harvey Dent.

I still find the Eckhart casting in TDK weird. He gives a great performance and I now can’t imagine the movie without him, but the principle of the situation is weird to me because they didn’t cast a big star in the role even though Nolan’s idea for the whole trilogy was to surround the hero with an all-star supporting cast and a big star as Dent/Two-Face just makes too much sense.

While I don’t like Chris Evans for the part, I do like the idea of casting a big name star who’s known for always being the good guy. For example, I think Tom Hanks would have been a great Two Face, not just because he’s a great actor, but his All-American persona off screen helps sell Harvey Dent on screen and makes the Two-Face persona that much more damaging.

Eh, Cillian Murphy, Tom Wilkinson, Tom Hardy etc. aren't "big stars".

We still don't know who's going to be Two-Face lol.
I mean, we also don't know who is going to be Kite Man, Calendar Man, providing the mocap for Ace the Bathound or any number of other characters who aren't in the movie.

Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, Michael Cain, Liam Neeson definitely are. Also, go watch the making of Batman Begins. Nolan says it himself. That was his goal. Obviously I agree he didn’t reach that goal seeing how I questioned Eckhart’s casting, but the idea that that was designed came straight from the horse’s mouth.

Dude, Hanks would be terrible as Two Face. He's a good actor, but that role is not in his wheelhouse.

Tom Pelphrey is looking Harvey Dent-esque in David Fincher's new movie. :smgs:

He was specifically talking about Batman Begins, not the sequels.

lol. Yes, Two-Face is too difficult for one of the greatest actors ever. :whatever:

I'd even go so far to say he isn't one of the greatest actors who ever lived. He's good in Philadelphia and Saving Private Ryan, but those movies were from 20 years ago, and everything else he's does he's either just fine or adequate. And he doesn't have a single role in his catalog that suggests he would even come close to making sense as Two-Face.

Philadelphia is not among his better performances.

He's better in The Green Mile and Road to Perdition than he is in Philadelphia.

Although I'd agree he hasn't done much noteworthy in a long time now.

I don't think he's talking about casting Hanks now.
