HBO's True Detective - Part 2

I like the 1940s idea. I would set it in 1940s NY with a old veteran cop hunting down a killer. Keep the classic noir theme going but do it better this time.

Maybe for season 3 instead of having veteran cops we could follow one or 2 characters throughout their careers from rookie to detective to retired and it follows one case that constantly haunts them as new information or new crimes keeps surfacing.

It could really show the strain of being a police officer and how it ages you beyond your years.
Have the main character be pretty much a fresh faced squeaky clean police academy graduate who becomes corrupted by his peers who urge him to cut corners or be punished for not complying and the case he is tries to solve is his form of redemption as it involves a pretty horrific crime.

Season 1 interested me because of the time lapses and the mystery of what went on with rusty to make him so damaged so hopefully they can return to that type of storytelling.
I still enjoyed season 2 but its no Season 1.

Oh, and Doctor Jones, I think Ani and Jordan are just heading out to start their new lives away from the mess they left behind, now that they've passed the evidence off to others, they're putting it behind them. Which was hopeful, in that that's what Frank and Ray wanted for them.

Oh, that would make sense.

I think it'll probably flow much better (not that it didn't to me, just sayin) in a full rewatch. I do love that little nugget at the end of Ani saying "his sonS", for a sec, I was like "wut?" and then seeing Jordan with the baby & Ani and I was feeling that Pizzaman did give us hope in the end.

I wish Ray's recordings could have been uploaded to Chad but it felt like it was therapeutical to him and that one moment btw Chad & Ray with the police badge, the salute, it was just perfect, that + the story will blow wide open and people will know the kind of man he was.

That scene between Ray and his son is by the far the most emotional moment in the entire show thus far. Pizzolatto really surprised me with how far he went there with that emotion. it just shows Pizzolatto prizes character instinct over fear of sentimentality. That moment was just goddamned earned. But it was his downfall.

Again, I think the true mystery this season were the characters themselves and finding out who they really were deep down and being honest with that. To see Frank in episode 1 to the guy in the desert so damn exposed and human is just an incredible transformation. The emphasis on pure character was just incredible and I applaud Pizzolatto for taking that risk.

You know who Colin Farrell would be perfect for? The Comedian in Watchmen. Goddamn.

Ray & Ani getting together and her with the baby at the end reminded me of The Terminator.

Ya, a huge theme of this season became just how deep the mystery and conspiracy really went, begging the question if they could ever even uncover it all or put a dent in it. By the end they realize all they could ever hope for is escape the situstion unscathed. Classic noir.

The finale was ok. Ray's decision was predictable. His difficulty sending the recording, idk. As a whole, I'm not sure how I felt about the season. Ray was the only character I cared about & followed. I think there was just too much going on

S2 = 8/10
S1 = 10/10

Still, cannot wait for season 3. Hoping for black narcotics officer(s) in Detroit/Chicago? Deal with some racial themes prevalent in the news today. In regards to police brutality/wrongful incarceration/decriminalization of drugs, etc.

Season finale was decent but overall it's a poor season and I'm not one of those who kept comparing season 1 to this.

Oh and I hope they go back to one director for season 3 instead of chopping and changing.

For season 3, I really like the idea of the mystery being around a killing of a cop. Maybe a killer who is targeting law enforcement officers.

I also think an older female detective teaming with a younger male detective could make an interesting duo.

For an older female detective, a few names that come to mind are Diane Lane, Julianne Moore, Laura Linney, Geena Davis and Angela Bassett.

For a younger male detective, someone like Robert Pattinson, Dave Franco, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Nicholas Hoult or Anton Yelchin.

I would like the killer to be a lead character. I want to follow him or her for the season while we follow the detectives.

Oh, one director for the whole season. I think someone like Miguel Sapochnik (TD S2 E6) or Michelle MacLaren would do a marvellous job.

Roll on, True Detective Season 3. Roll on.

I watched episodes 4-7 yesterday and just finished the finale about an hour ago.

My fav scene from the entire season has to be Bezzerides at the orgy-party in episode 6. The string music was eerie as hell, mixed with her visions etc. it was quite frightening.

I felt that there was hope amongst the sorrow.

The journalist will publish the story or leak it if he has to and in this day and age something would come of that so the bad guys will get their commupence.

Ray didnt care about the paternity test. In his mind he was his kids father, and we got to see that he actually was the kid's dad. His son loved him and he knew that in their final moment together and one day the kid will be very proud of who his father was. Ray's ex can rest easy knowing that her son is Ray's too.

Ani had Ray's baby and is with Jordan so there is hope there too.

Its not a very happy ending, but there is some victories and the promise of larger victories.

Agreed. I think Pizzolatto's work comes across stronger when there's 1 man bringing the vision to life, setting the tone with music and what not. Honestly, I think Justin Lin did a terrific job with the first 2 eps he directed and I would not be opposed to see him come back and do all 8 for S3.

Is that all noir stories though? A sad ending?

I was kinda dreading this episode because 90 minutes sounded like it was going to be a real chore to sit through with this show but the time just flew by. I thought it was an excellent finale. Unlike the finale for season 1, all our questions were satisfactorily answered. I wasn't troubled by the downer ending because I didn't really anticipate anything else. Two cops and one gangster vs. all the entrenched corruption of Vinci...eh, what we got was the most realistic outcome. I've never cared for Frank and Ray was marked for death from episode 1 so I wasn't too fazed by their deaths, either. I'm glad at least Ani made it out.

Frank was really at his best during this episode, killing people and no longer spouting pompous gibberish. The part at the end where he spoke to his wife before dying was so moving. It was too late to save the character for me but his death sequence was definitely well done.

The only part I didn't like as how the Mexicans found Frank seemingly at random. Also how Laura was revealed to be Caspere's daughter. It was an unnecessary complication.

I really want Viola Davis after seeing her Amanda Waller performance in Suicide Squad. But yeah, I hope we get more racial diversity in the upcoming cast of Season 3 if it exists.

Two.

That's the only thing I really want the next time around.

Two.

^Agreed. TD2 was at its best when Ani and Ray were interacting. There was also a great scene between Ray and Paul driving together. Depicting two damaged cops bouncing off one another is something Pizzolatto does well. This season was dragged down by having too many characters - including side characters - and too dense of a plot for the eight episodes allotted.
