HBO's True Detective - Part 2

I was thinking late 2018 but I'm okay with that too. This show is better served when you take more time with it.

If anyone is looking for something to read, I'd recommend Between Here and the Yellow Sea, Pizzolatto's collection of short stories pre Galveston. Of course that's an excellent read as well. His prose is like no other.

It would be nice, but if it's something outside of where he's familiar with, it might take longer, and apparently, the trades said it took him until this year to settle on a concept. I'm assuming he's just finished the scripts if he started in March.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was Arkansas. It was the original location in the first drafts of season one before Louisiana. Plus Pizzolatto lived there while in grad school. He could do something that takes place in the wilderness perhaps.
I like the Arkansas idea, and I'll throw in North Carolina into the ring. I remember reading some interviews from McBride/DGG regarding Vice Principals and how they kinda wanted to rep their parts of the south in the show, so maybe Pizzolatto would want to do something similar to that since he also taught there.

Ali is confirmed.

At HBO’s summer TCA presentation, president of programming Casey Bloys gave an update on the status of True Detective, which had been awaiting a third season green light.

Bloys confirmed that Oscar-winning Moonlight actor Mahershala Ali has closed a deal to star in the potential third season of the anthology series.

Bloys said that he had read five finished scripts. “They are terrific,” Bloys said. “We are talking to directors, and when we have a director we want to hire, it will be a go.”

He noted that a third season of True Detective is much further along than a potential second installment of The Night Of.
Steven Zaillian is yet to pitch an idea to HBO. “The good news about Steven Zaillian is that he will come to you when he’s ready, and when he comes to us, we’ll know he’s locked.”

A third installment of True Detective, from creator Nic Pizzolatto, has been in the works for a while, with HBO veteran David Milch coming on board earlier this year to work with Pizzolatto.
The first season of True Detective was very well received and became a cult phenomenon, landing a slew of awards and nominations and triggering a swift renewal. The drama also earned a quick-turnaround second installment, which drew mixed reaction from critics and fans.

I hope this goes just beyond the blabbing about it stage. :( We've waited too long already.

Seems like they'll be going with one director. I've no problem with that. I still think you can have a consistency with more than one, but it helps make this show unique and helps the novel-esque sole vision approach with the writing.

I am a happy sponge right now.

True Detective season 3 greenlit; details revealed

Big True Detective news: Season 3 is officially a Go, with HBO finally greenlighting a new round. Plus, after months of secrecy, there are all sorts of new details.

First: After a season spent in Los Angeles, the show is returning to its rural season 1 roots: The next round starring a previously announced Mahershala Ali (House of Cards) will be set in the Ozarks. Ali will play the lead role of Wayne Hays, a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas.

Also, we have a logline: “The next installment of True Detective tells the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods.”

Also-also: Some behind-the-scenes details. Original showrunner Nic Pizzolatto will be the sole writer of the series (with the exception of episode 4, which he co-wrote with David Milch, who was brought on board to help Pizzolatto shape the season).

Doesn't really seem like they learned their lesson from season 2. Nic Pizzolatto seems to be doing a lot on his own again. Would be better if Jeremy Saulnier was directing all the episodes.

Looking forward to it. :D

Hope Saulnier directs a good chunk of the episodes and not just the pilot.

But looking forward to it. The premise sounds really interesting.

Sounds good but why bring in Milch to co write only 1 episode? Should've collaborated on the entire season.

I believe Mich helped shaped the overall story of this season and then he co-wrote an episode.

So excited for season 3! I'm hoping this is something special.

Big fan of Blue Ruin and Green Room so I'm excited for Saulnier.

Ozarks tourism board probably loving these crime shows giving them publicity.

I'm sure HBO has learned their lesson. Pizzolatto has probably had more time to work on the script than he had for season 2. I'll bet there has been some studio oversight of the script too.

Yeah I'm also a big fan of Blue Ruin and Green Room. Can't wait.

Please give me Macon Blair as a crime lord.

I'm getting a good feeling about this. Saulnier is excellent and fits Pizzolatto and True Detective. He has a distinct style but also isn't a copy of Fukunaga. Combine that with Arkansas and Pizzolatto's guiding vision, it should feel what makes True Detective so distinct, but be new.

I'm just curious if they're co-directing all the episodes or if Saulnier and Pizzolatto are dividing the duties. I wouldn't be surprised if Saulnier is directing more.

Really. :( I love those guys.

Is True Detective Ali's only project in 2018? Could be something else...

“True Detective” Season 3 Adds Carmen Ejogo to Star Opposite Mahershala Ali

Carmen Ejogo has joined Mahershala Ali in HBO’s third season of TRUE DETECTIVE, the premium cable network announced Friday.

The storyline of Season 3 of the anthology series follows a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods.

Ejogo will play Amelia Reardon, an Arkansas schoolteacher with a connection to two missing children in 1980. As previously announced, Ali plays the lead role of Wayne Hays, a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas. It’s still unclear whether Hays will have a partner, as the investigators on the first two seasons all did.

Jeremy Saulnier (Green Room) will executive produce and direct the new season alongside series creator Nic Pizzolatto.

Joining Pizzolatto and Saulnier as executive producers will be the original True Detective trio of Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson and Cary Fukunaga, as well as Scott Stephens and Anonymous Content’s Steve Golin, Bard Dorros and Richard Brown.
