Drama HBO's True Detective - Part 3

I hope Dorff gets more high profile gigs after this show. Dude's ****ing killing it.

Me too and I always thought he was a very underrated character actor. Even in bad movies his performance is usually really solid. So glad that he is an integral part of this show.

He's always been a really good good actor, but in this he seems to have found another gear. Great performance.

Another excellent episode, finally drawing us nearer to the conclusion.

Theory:

I'm starting to get the sense that Roland West might be gay, and possibly had some sort of intimate relationship with Tom (Julie's dad). He seemed very hesitant to investigate Tom and the gay underground angle in the 1990 timeline. I'm guessing Hayes either purposely or inadvertently outed Roland in 1990. This is why 2015 Roland is pissed at Hayes (who doesn't remember what he did) and lives alone, no longer on the force, etc.

I really do dislike the argument that not being biological makes you less of a dad. :( He was there for the daughter from the beginning, that makes him a real dad, not the one who wasn't there.

Another fantastic episode. What's interesting about this season is that there is a major break with each episode but that break creates another wrinkle, upending what you think is happening. Not in a gimmicky gotcha type of way but in a way that makes you feel like Hays. Just as another pieces reveals itself, there's still more that need to be found. And there are even other times like the end of this episode where we are ahead of him and West. That ending was genuinely creepy.

And Ali continues to be absolutely killing it. That scene between him and Henry was emotional. Between that scene and the ending T Bone's score has been excellent. Bone chilling at times.

I'm glad to see the ghosts coming back in the next episode. They seem to be wearing suits.

Guessing he’s Hoyt
Michael Rooker

Man that ending was pretty damn creepy. It does seem like some new big revelation is made in every episode, but like Doctor Jones said it absolutely works and isn't gimmicky at all.

That ending had me so nervous!!!

Another great episode this week! So many turns, plus great performances from Ali, Stephen Dorff, Carmen, and Scoot.

Good episode this week. This season's been such a big step up from S2, imo. Michael Rooker was a pleasant surprise. Didn't realize he was in this!

That Season 1 tie in was great, but its hard to believe this show is already coming to an end. It still feels like we got another 2 or three episodes to go, but after last nights episode I really can't wait to see how it gets wrapped up. Also, its ****ing awesome that they got Michael Rooker in this. He is such a perfect fit for this kind of show even though I know he's only going to be in it for one episode.

Finally got caught up. Excellent show. Not quite as good as season one but a million times better than the awful season two. So as far as I can tell, the one-eyed man helped Hoyt’s daughter abduct the girl because her daughter died. Her mother either helped them or found out about it and got paid off. Hoyt has Harris kill her years later, possibly because she was having second thoughts. He also obviously killed Tom after he found the pink room, and probably also killed the junkie cousin guy (who may have even been in Tom’s trunk). It all fits together pretty well but there has to be something else. I guess it’s possible Amelia helped, though I hope not.

Amelia is not in on anything. Pizzolatto has confirmed this repeatedly. It's weak writing and the type that has never been there since season one when people thought Marty or Rust was the killer. Amelia will play a big role in the finale, but I feel more for closure of Wayne's journey. Perhaps something in her book that will help him connect what he might discover. Either way, I think it's all going to be in service of Wayne's ending. He's finally succumbing to his disease.

So far, this season has summed up what True Detective has always really been about.

I was happy to see the season one reference have a few different functions which made it a fun Easter Egg. But those hoping this is gonna be some big conspiracy are going to be disappointed. Like when people were over predicting The Yellow King and thought Cthulu was going to show up in the season one finale, it closed what the season has always been about and it was those two men. Like this season, focus squarely on Wayne's whole life.

I'm gonna miss it and it only started last month! I hope I don't have to wait another four years, but I want this show to take its time. I'm willing to wait two or three years if we get a season that matches one and three.

tonight's the night

hope wayne and roland can at least find some closure

Bit of an anti-climatic solution to the complex problem, but it was a good series overall. :)

Wasn’t able to watch. Can someone spoil for me? Do we find out how his wife died?

That was beautiful and heartbreaking. It's pretty much what I expected in terms of how things would unravel. It was purely based within Wayne's present journey.

The loop to his life closed. I think now Wayne will be at peace.

I'm pissed that this show came and went so quickly.

We do not. Actually, we don't get any closer to that than before. The final scene is them rekindling things not in 1990, but 1980, after a bit of a falling out. So we know no more about Amelia's passing than we did before.

But overall, I liked the family. Pity about Wayne's memory going just when he had arrived at and found Julie Purcell living out her life. But I wonder if Henry keeping the address was the show's way of holding onto that plot thread.

Also, really enjoyed Michael Rooker here. Even though he only appeared in this episode and was only here for the first few minutes, he left a hell of an impression when trying to get under Wayne's skin and cutting through all of the BS.
