Justice League Henry Cavill IS Clark Kent/Superman - - - - - - - - - - Part 19

Gail Simone's thread about being on the set of Superman Returns and the way the employees there were pitching the movie's plot to her is a really eye opening look at why the studio has struggled with Superman the last few decades, IMO.

I'm glad Brandon got one last crack at Superman. His performance on Crisis didn't fix my angst and the bitter disappointment of Superman Returns. When I'm rooting more for Richard White than Superman in a Superman film, chances are, it personally failed and that's what SR did to me.

Superman Returns :

- Half a**ed attempt at remaking Donner's original, with Chris Reeve's charismatic take replaced by a mopey, emo, dialogue challenged superman, who is weighed down by the feeling of isolation and christ-like imagery. The pointless 'Lois lane and her amazing new family' sublot didn't help.
Did like Brandon Routh alot though and the flying scenes were pretty cool. Also casting Kevin Spacey as a supervillain made so much sense back then and makes so much MORE sense now.

Man of Steel:

- Half a**ed attempt at making an all new superman movie that isn't connected to the previous films, yet Clark/Superman was a mopey, emo, dialogue challenged individual who was weighed down by feelings of isolation and christ-like imagery.
Did like Cavill alot though, the action scenes were great, the krypton scenes were great and some of the plot points were well done.

Batman v Superman:

- Half a**ed attempt at making a superman sequel where he is pushed aside to establish a new batman and a whole cinematic universe. Also Zack Snyder doubles down on his controversial superman by making him more mopey, more emo, giving him LESS dialogue (if possible) and as an added bonus Zack turns superman into a nihilist "no one stays good in this world anymore".
The film ends with superman getting the shaft (literally, from cave troll Doomsday) inorder to set up a JL movie where batman assembles the league because having superman alive to do so wouldn't have been as interesting according to Snyder.

Lets not forget, the new 52, Bendis's current run and CW making it a habit to crap on superman in a desperate attempt to make their skirt superman more interesting (hasn't worked apparently) and it is a true wonder that the character is still alive and well or perhaps it's a testament to the character's enduring cultural impact, either way he's here and he ain't going nowhere.

END OF RANT and sorry for the rant everybody, just had to get it off my chest. It's been a long day.

I had to wait freaking 2 weeks before watching MOS 7 years ago, they decided to delay it for 2 weeks for AUS for some reason, and NZ had to follow them even if we are not part of AUS lol.

That's one half-a**ed reductionist criticism there, mate. :funny:

Man I loved MOS in the cinema, and pretty much every time I have watched it since.

As for a favourite moment? That's tough, but "Krypton had its chance" which is Superman finally choosing Earth after being a bit conflicted earlier, is just awesome for me.

Brandon deserved that shot for sure, I think it might not be the last we’ve seen of him aswell.

I don’t know I do like SR but it is a disappointing film. There’s so many great moments in it for me though.

Well, I loved SR as well. I loved the Reeve movies as a kid but as grew up I just found them too dated. I loved what SR did and funnily enough it also tackled Superman feeling alienated and isolated but connected him to humanity via the child rather than Lois.

It's also the movie that got me reading Superman comics and I still watch it every now and again.

Requiem for Krypton is a very good making of Superman Returns 3 hour behind the scenes special. It features everything from Singer's original pitch to Brandon's last day of filming. I enjoy it more than the film. I do like Brandon. Glad he got to put on the suit for Crisis.

SR was a strange experience. All those films were in development and suddenly out of nowhere they greenlit SR in July 2004, put into production weeks later, cast Brandon in October and started filming March 2005. When I first saw the photos of Brandon I wasn't impressed and got some bad vibes. But it was a Superman film and we hadn't had one in 19 years so I was excited anyway. I appreciate all Superman films in one way or another. Even the ones I don't like much.

At the time when I saw Superman Returns in the cinema my major gripes were the boring story and the bland efforts in making it a kind of sequel to Superman TM. I did not like the film. Even after numerous rewatch, it's still boring for a modern Superman film.

People keep saying that Routh looks like Reeve - nope. Reeve was a lot more mature, bigger and adult-looking with a very sharp facial bone structure.

I never care for the nostalgia trip. I was already shaking my head when John Williams' theme came on, that was when I knew that the movie was in trouble. If you're rebooting a film that was last on about 19 years ago, you better come up with new music.

I recently saw this deleted scene - there are pictures of Glenn Ford's Pa Kent but with Eve Maria-Saint's Ma Kent. I thought what the hell - in addition to Brando's scenes they really double down on the nostalgia trip.

The studio for thinking Superman wouldn't be successful.

He's mocking the idea that it's the character's fault that many of his films were divisive or unsuccessful.
Where is studio saying it can't be done ? The article is quoting Heroic Hollywood as source, which just puts opinion pieces as news and builds a narrative that most would easily agree on without questioning the source.

That journey in the making of is brilliant, it is kinda hard to watch now though knowing what pieces of garbage Singer & Spacey are.

Please note that my pound of flesh on Superman Returns is merely my personal opinion based on my cinema experience since the mid-70s. I have no qualm about others' opinions about SR, good or bad and they entitled to them anyway.

I don’t have any strong feelings against SR, but I’ll always be a little resentful of it because it got made instead of Flyby, and I believe that not only would I personally have enjoyed Flyby far more, but that Superman as a character would be in a very different place today, if there had been a franchise made from Flyby instead of SR and MoS. Despite the changes to the mythos I didn’t love, that version of the character was the modernized, likable, uplifting, and entertaining Superman I was looking for, and I think audiences would’ve been much more responsive to it than either recent cinematic version we’ve gotten since. It was the MCU approach to Superman before the MCU was a thing. Superman could’ve again led the charge and been followed by other heroes into that “golden age of CBM’s.” But instead we got Donner nostalgia, followed by the knee-jerk reaction to the Donner nostalgia’s failure that went way too far in the other direction, so that barely anyone even agrees on who Superman is anymore.

Now that we can agree on Flyby had some fascinating things that I I would've loved to have seen done.
