Yeah. It's also unclear exactly when the "American" accent actually started; it's possible that Washington and all the founding fathers spoke with English accents. Although those accents would have likely sounded different than they do today; apparently the soft pronunciation of "r" sounds common in BBC English started well after the British began colonizing America.
