BvS Henry Cavill IS Superman - - - - - - - Part 21

I feel the exact opposite, even though your view is probably more popular than mine. All of the Supermen that came before Cavill, Reeve included, looked like slightly larger than average men engaging in cosplay. Reeves, Reeve, Routh..etc all acted quite well, but I could never buy into the illusion of seeing a super-powered humanoid alien.

Cavill went the extra mile when it came to getting into shape. He didn't just get trim, he added the bulk that characterizes Superman in the comics. He looked extraordinary, even without the costume. Then he was put in a suit that looks functional rather than cheesy. When I see him, I see someone who looks like they just walked off the pages of the comics.

Well as someone into fitness, I appreciate what Cavill brought to the table, he looked fantastic. But I don't think Reeve looked weak either. I think he was sturdy enough to elicit strength but also possessed the long limbs to accentuate his already good height.

I just think the height is the more important of the two, particularly standing next to Batman who I never thought should be taller. Equal if nothing else, not taller. But Snyder was going for a bigger Batman, so I'm excited to see how it translates.

I consider myself a purist (or traditionalist) who can 'accept' changes - but oddly enough, this time I don't just accept Batman being bigger, heavier and taller, I kind of look forward to seeing how it works.

But I also generally prefer my Superman to be the tallest of the regular JL excluding Martian Manhunter.

I'm the same way, it just adds to Superman having a more regal appearance.

I don't mind the bulk but I do think a slightly more athletic look as opposed to muscular serves the same purpose while retaining the appearance of being agile. I also think it makes him seem even more alien and powerful when doing feats of strength if he doesn't look like he could bench 600 pounds.

Superman is not the real person, therefor, it is an act of sorts.

You realize it's part of an act, to hide who he really is.. I find Cavill just fine.

Watch Returns for wooden.....

It depends on the interpretation.

I don't think Routh was wooden either, his Clark was really good. His Superman wasn't given enough to say either.

I'll agree on the importance of height. I've always felt that Supes fell into the same category as Thor in that he needs to be both tall and jacked for the sake of authenticity. For that matter, Wonder Woman falls into that same category, but we know that Snyder didn't agree.

Or he just got the lady he could find that mostly matched all her attributes?

I found this scene jarring for a number of reasons, but one of them was how much agency and personality Superman was showing for the first time. He may not be wooden here, but it's almost a different character than what was presented in the rest of the film IMO.

.

What was so jarring about it? I also don't understand your second part.

The MCU has kind of nailed the height situation of all the characters. Thor standing taller over everyone, then Cap and BP, then Stark, Hawkeye and now quite a short Spider-man which will fit in with his age, and looking up to the Avengers.

Supes will be at best the third tallest in the JL, which if I were to be super nit picky, I could be a little disappointed in, but then I remember we are getting a Justice League film and all is well

It was preceded by an excessive 30 minute fight which levelled city blocks and culminated in Superman killing the only surviving Kryptonian. Cut to Superman joking around with an army general in the desert with no reference to what just happened.

Couple of people recently discovered the word "jarring" and are going crazy using it now.

You can add "wooden" to that list.

I see MoS supporters are defensive as ever.

Sigh! Can we just move on from Man of Steel? Everything that's been said has been said either positive, negative or middling since the film came out.

Let's look to the future Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice...

Agree with the basic sentiment here... but...

Please vote to give the film a rating here! No need for discussion on it if people are weary of that (although that is not discouraged in the thread, by the same token)--I'm mainly just curious to see what the distribution for the community looks like on it.

This is the Henry Cavill as Man of Steel thread. Discussion of the one full movie where we saw Henry Cavill as the Man of Steel seems somewhat appropriate.

Yeah, and even after BvS is released we'll still be comparing how the character evolves from one film to the next also.

Fourth or fifth depending on who will play Green Lantern.

It's appropriate to talk about Henry Cavill as Superman or Clark not if the finale of the previous film went on to long. It's the same tired arguments leaking into different threads.

...for me it is not so much about height. Although I don't think Superman should ever be depicted as short... as long as he is above average height he is fine. A 3 year old Kryptonian could still kick Batman's butt so being shorter than Batman is irrelevant :sly:

I think Batman being taller lends some drama. Batman will "feel" superior due to his height...until...

Similar to Bruce Lee fighting bigger opponents. He had the confidence and swagger even though the opponent was bigger. It allows a humorous repartee that the audience is in on. I think the scene with Lex showed this fairly well. Everyone chuckles at the line "should not pick a fight with this person"

As for the builds, I think it was depicted that the Kryptonians are more advanced and have a biologically "perfected" anatomy. They were all very "fit" and healthy specimens.

Superman's physique is a reflection of this, he is just built that way. A visual cue that he is powerful which lends respect and awe.

The way he carries himself and his morals cement the image.

...and he looks better, more comic-booky in the tights than any Superman before...so there's that...:cwink:

Aslong as he isn't under 6 foot then that's good for me

Edit: the actor playing Superman that is I'm aware Henry's around 6'1

No, I don't think so. Just saw it, liked it and decided to share it. :D

lol

You act like Superman told a knock-knock joke. It is clear to me that some time had passed. To each their own. I'm not going to go into that mos loop again. I do find it hilarious that folks who hate mos talk about it more than folks that actually like it.

Agreed. I think it would've worked better if they went from Zod's death straight to Jonathan's grave and then leave the drone scene as a kind of mid-credits scene.
