I feel the exact opposite, even though your view is probably more popular than mine. All of the Supermen that came before Cavill, Reeve included, looked like slightly larger than average men engaging in cosplay. Reeves, Reeve, Routh..etc all acted quite well, but I could never buy into the illusion of seeing a super-powered humanoid alien.
Cavill went the extra mile when it came to getting into shape. He didn't just get trim, he added the bulk that characterizes Superman in the comics. He looked extraordinary, even without the costume. Then he was put in a suit that looks functional rather than cheesy. When I see him, I see someone who looks like they just walked off the pages of the comics.
Well as someone into fitness, I appreciate what Cavill brought to the table, he looked fantastic. But I don't think Reeve looked weak either. I think he was sturdy enough to elicit strength but also possessed the long limbs to accentuate his already good height.
I just think the height is the more important of the two, particularly standing next to Batman who I never thought should be taller. Equal if nothing else, not taller. But Snyder was going for a bigger Batman, so I'm excited to see how it translates.
I consider myself a purist (or traditionalist) who can 'accept' changes - but oddly enough, this time I don't just accept Batman being bigger, heavier and taller, I kind of look forward to seeing how it works.
But I also generally prefer my Superman to be the tallest of the regular JL excluding Martian Manhunter.
I'm the same way, it just adds to Superman having a more regal appearance.
I don't mind the bulk but I do think a slightly more athletic look as opposed to muscular serves the same purpose while retaining the appearance of being agile. I also think it makes him seem even more alien and powerful when doing feats of strength if he doesn't look like he could bench 600 pounds.
