BvS Henry Cavill IS Superman - - - - - - - - - - Part 24

The anecdote about Jonathan saving his farm but accidentally causing a flood at the Lang's, killing their horses and livestock. He was inconsolable until Martha helped him recover. That's where "Martha was my world" came in. She was his rock and he wouldn't have done it without her.

The line is repeated twice by Clark, in the Knightmare sequence and Doomsday fight. Snyder's planting clear seeds here.

I figured that was also a metaphor for Superman's work in the world.

Have to give credit to Henry, he was excellent in the final act, really big improvement from what I thought was a struggling effort in MOS.

My only concern is that this Superman may peak with this and Justice League, I wouldn't be sure how to do Brainiac or whoever after that in a solo film.

Goddamnit.

I'll expand on this is in a full review, but unfortunately, the movie played out as I feared it would. Henry does a great job, but sadly, he isn't given enough to do. I never really put much stock in the "lack of dialogue" complaints about MOS, because most of the scenes where his dialogue is sparse are ones where he's off on his own. But here, there are multiple scenes where he swoops in, says next to nothing, and then we need to get back to Batman's storyline. And I'm sure Henry's detractors will spew some crap that Snyder was trying to "hide" his performance because it was so bad or some other bullsh**, but give me a break. They didn't know how to write f***ing dialogue for him and it's obvious. It's like they're so afraid that Superman might say something that rubs fans the wrong way that they think the best solution is to just have him silently listen to everyone. I couldn't believe they didn't give him a single line in the Senate hearing or during the scene with Martha. His scenes with Lois (who was also underused) are among the best... wish we had gotten more of that. But then, we're talking about a movie where the best way they could show how Superman is a true hero is to f***ing kill him in the end. And yeah, I know he'll be back, but you know who doesn't know that? The kid I a few rows away from me who was crying at the end of the movie (that's not an exaggeration). Seriously, get Snyder the hell off this project and hire someone that wants to showcase Superman and flesh him out instead of just throw him into the mix whenever we need a break from Batman.

Whats wrong with a little speaking superman? Man doesnt like to speak much... ever when he was accused of something.
and u think if he speaks up it will make much different?

I feel like it would flesh out his character more. Cavill does what he can and he's great with it, but it's hard to warm to his character when he's reduced to just looking contemplative and swooping in to save the day.

The Supes not saying much is in line with the fact that he's conflicted and doesn't know what to say....to me, that lack of confidence is the missing ingredient that will hopefully be present when he comes back. I think it's the personality component needed to make him the true Supes that everyone loves.

Even in interviews you can see Cavill would like to take this character in a different direction.

STARMAN-- I read an interview with HC where he discusses Supes still being a "rank amateur" I think now that was his way of preparing people for the fact that Supes is still developing.

And yes, I think he sounds ready for that development to be over.

He's sort of stretching his wings as a savior. Not the leader figure yet. Still being introduced to the world.

Superman is still as stiff and uninteresting as a board in this movie. I thought they'd have enough time to give the character something interesting to do or say, but no.
The fact that he's still being introduced to the world is disappointing when you consider how the movie ends. His death was completely unnecessary and the wrong way to end the second movie in the DCEU.

Yeah, but...

It's all part of the plan. First Robin, now Superman... Welcome to the DC ExtenDEAD Universe! Join us in 2018 when we kill the Flash and Aquaman!

I thought it worked fine within the context of the film. They demonstrated how Clark wasloved such as the rescue in Mexico, but of course he also had his detractors. I think it's safe to say his sacrifice won them over going by the ceremony in Metropolis.

It should lead to some epic euphoria when he returns when it matters most in JL.

If my opinions were actually laughable this movie wouldn't be receiving such a lashing.

But...
He could have won everyone over in so many other ways than sacrificing himself. That wasn't necessary from a story-telling point of view. And it doesn't negate the criticisms I've already mentioned. It was a hollow sacrifice that came too early.
Also, since we know Clark Kent is presumed dead, and we know Lex Luthor just magically figured out his identity, how the hell are they going to explain both Superman and Clark returning at the same time? I know this isn't a huge obstacle but it's a valid question.

I suspect
the death of Superman will be necessary for JL because of the codex. I suspect his death will activate the codex (which I suspect is the life equation) and draw DS here, to get the anti-life equation.

I didn't see it as unnecessary, as it had a great emotional payoff that these type of films do not give enough.

I thought it was obvious that Lex figured out his identity by going through the ship's archives.

I can think of several other emotional payoffs in superhero cinema that worked so much better, but to each their own.
I only saw the movie once and it's so stuffed to the brim that I'm sure I missed what you have in the spoiler tags but I appreciate the heads up. I'm seeing it again tonight so I'll keep an eye out for it.

I swear if Snyder turns Superman evil or goes down the "Injustice" Route by having him turn dark, even temporarily, by killing Lois Lane, fans should throw things at Snyder if he ever appears at a Superman convention.

I too am afraid of this because of the Knightmare, with Superman's line to Bruce
"She was my world" paralleling with "You are my world", and Flash's message to Bruce about being too early/Lois being the key

I'm mostly afraid because having Lois dead and Superman go full dictator and then be killed would mean that they could recast the roles for the parallel universe Superman/Lois. I'm just worried that Henry, due to the (imo unwarranted) criticism of his acting and Amy, because (again imo unwarranted) criticism of her 'not having much to do' - and Hollywood ageism - are going to be the ones who undeservedly take the fall for the failure (amongst critics) of the film. I love them as Clark and Lois and would hate this to happen.

And as others have mentioned, the way Lois died in Injustice was just awful and Snyder seems to like that sort of thing - see
Cyborg's scene in BvS. I'm not squeamish, I understood the need for Dr Manhattan's rebirth in Watchmen to be painful, I just thought seeing Vic go through that was unnecessarily horrible

Loved the Lois and Clark scenes.

Henry also stepped it up in this as well.

Miss_lois_lane The Lois and Clark from the parallel universe in Injustice still look the same. If they ever do that they'll still be Henry and Amy.

And yeah, his first scene as Clark with Lois showed a happy Clark. That's what I want to see more often.

I know they do, I just fear they'd put in some 'different universe/different DNA' excuse or something. I'm being paranoid, I know!

I loved seeing happy Clark and Lois too, that was the absolute highlight of the film for me.

Lois
holding Clark's body.... sniff sniff... so sad.

"This is my world, YOU are my world".

Can't get over his delivery on that line.
:(
"You are my world." The sad smile. He looked defeated yet happy she was going to live.
Truly heartbreaking.

I hated how

After the Senate explosion, he just stands there amid the fire with a look on his face that all but says "Gosh darnit!"

Awful scene.
