Cavil just embodies Superman

Reeve to me is still the quintessential Superman overall, in terms of the whole package.

Cavill is a very close second. In fact, physically he may even be #1 as I often see pics of him in the suit and he looks even more like the comic book Superman of my childhood brought to life than Reeve even did. However he's only really started out and we haven't really seen enough of his DP Clark Kent persona yet to say if he is the actor who best embodies all the personas associated with Superman; the superhero, the reporter, the Smallville farm boy, and so on. His potential is amazing.

At the risk of sounding unkind, Routh almost seems like a blip in the cinematic Superman mythology. He seems a nice guy but I feel he was only ever hired on looks; his acting was passable at best and any chance he could have had to show some unique ability was drowned out by Singer's obsession with moulding his film to fit with the Donnerverse, to some degree.

I always liked Welling. I never thought he was the best actor in the world, but he did show talent at times, and ultimately it was a CW Tv show so the writing was never going to be Oscar worthy. Physically I still rate him almost as highly as Cavill; I felt he was a naturally big guy who embodied Clark Kent very well. And he did dedicate his life to the role for nigh on 10 years, both as an actor, exec producer and sometimes director

Are you reading my mind.

I did like Routh aswell but you're right he was only cast for the way he looked. Anyway I'm sure he has no regrets, he now is having another crack at a superhero and doing a much better job.

Welling is very underrated IMO and I hate to God when people say he didn't play Superman. He did he played a younger version of the character Clark but there were many many moments when he was Superman. Superman is more than just a name.

RE: the last page: I was ranking the actors based on their respective resemblances to Superman, not on how well they embodied the character's traits. If I had been, it would've been Reeve, Cavill, Routh.

On the face of it singer's superman film was too boring while Snyder's film had too much action and destruction but if fans stopped and analyzed both they'd realize that both films committed the same cardinal since NEITHER FILMS FOCUSED ON THE ADULT SUPERMAN. In SR the film focused on a boring as lois and her boring as family with superman hovering around like a creep, having no dialogue or an ounce of personality and with MOS we got to know alot about the younger CK but the adult CK just stood around corners moping and looking emo and again without any dialogue.
Both film IMO assumed that the audience know who superman is and that maybe true, the audience know superman but they don't know what makes him appealing or what makes the character of CK tick and they won't know that until a film maker finally comes in and says "guys lets give HC some dialogue, let's let the audience know about this charming protagonist so they can get behind him''.

Your one of my favorite posters. But I will never give Welling Superman credit. He added to the lore but never fulfilled it...properly. It wasnt even his own suit. It was Routh's.

No suit, no Superman.

Welling was just not a good actor, imo. I don't care about him never wearing the suit, and it has nothing to do with wanting to tear him down to build...anyone up. He just didn't deliver half his lines credibly and couldn't sell a genuine emotional moment if his life depended on it. To me, he was just the textbook definition of the term "CW-level acting," and he was doing it well before the CW even existed.

Of course I disagree but thanks for the compliment :woot:

Eh, All I know is that Smallville got me into Superman when I was about 8. It made me want to be a better person, I didn't have a dad so Pa Kent really helped in that regard, he was just a nice guy in the series! And when he dies....lawd....
So as cheesy and as bad acting Smallville was and had, it will always have a place in my heart.

A mate if mines lent me 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E' to watch, I missed it at the cinema so looking forward to watching it this weekend.

I'll have to go with Reeve as my favorite on-screen Superman. Sure, the Donner/Lester characterization has its faults, but I attribute that mostly to the writing, as opposed to Reeve's portrayal. Cavill comes a close second, and I'm very much hoping that we get to see a fully-formed Superman in his take on the character this time around. I don't have much to say about Routh; he gets little more than a perfunctory mention from me.

As far as physical appearance goes, they all have a resemblance to the character, some of which was enhanced with hair dye [Both Reeve and Cavill were somewhat lighter-haired prior to being cast] or contacts [Routh wore blue ones]. That said, I still kind of have my own ideas as to what a real-life Superman would look like; in my mind's eye, he's not a carbon copy of any one particular actor working today.

Cavill is very close to the superman in my mind's eye, except for the hair they gave him. I always wanted a live action superman to have flowing hair like Jim Lee's version, but all the big-screen supes have slicked down hair, lol.

I agree with all of the above.

Awesome! Hope you enjoy! I think it's frothy fun...with cool action, clothes, cars and comedy. I think you'll find it worth it.

Man From UNCLE was pretty good. Nothing great, but definitely enjoyable. Henry was awesome.

I think Welling was fine. Just fine. He never set my world on fire, but he did well enough for me to look back on his time as Clark Kent with fondness.

He was much better at playing the bad guy, though. His Clark Luthor, for example, was much more engaging than his Clark Kent.

Watching MoS on FX. Random thoughts:

1. I just noticed that when Supes boards the Black Zero with Lois, he lets her go first--- what manners. So like a decent Kansas farmboy.

2. I love when Supes reacts to the atmosphere on Zod's ship, and says "I...feel strange...weak" Pitch perfect Superman delivery

3. Clark wearing a Royals T-Shirt even in the vision he has with Zod = amazing. His love for his Kansas sports teams runs so deep that it's ingrained in his brain.

To this day I still think Wellings build was close to perfect most of the time (considering his weight fluctuated) for a young Superman

I'd love to have seen what he'd have turned out like after going through the kind of training Cavill did

He's a lot more mature looking now and seems to have slimmed a lot

That film is like one rewrite away from being really great, as it stands, it's just good. Solid. I say the biggest issue was the anemic villains. If the villains had gotten some more development that would have put the film over the top.

Napoleon Solo was Sterling Archer on the big screen and I loved it

I have yet to see Man from Uncle. As an HC fan, I'm a bit ashamed, but I was too lazy to see it in theatres and too cheap to buy the DVD. I need it on Netflix.
