If you followed the reception the film got from all the trailers, it was near universal acclaim and anticipation for what was to come. People were clearly enamored by a modern take on the character (as opening weekend showed), I just don't think the execution grabbed as many as it could have.Oh... not that &$$%% again...

I really think most of the them were because they didn't got what they want they got with a incarnation of the character that really was in the past and wouldn't fit now and obviously saw that as the source to criticize which is totally silly, cause plenty of those reviews have no sense and their complains are totally stupid. there.. I said it.
Unfortunately some guys follow that criteria and don't have their own criteria and act like sheep following that, that's pretty much the majority of the cases.
Every movie needs to improve the previous one to please more people that's for sure. that's the point on sequels.

I browse various online communities (Reddit in particular), and those who disliked were definitely not the type to harp back to the Donner days. That wasn't the demographic.
I can't speak for the critics (I didn't read most of their reviews), but I'd imagine it's understandable they still favored the Reeve era as they are from an older generation. Nonetheless, the mixed reception was across the board of all demographics, from what I've witnessed.
It's like how I'd imagine Lois and Supes would be.
