Henry Cavill Out as Superman Amid Warner Bros.' DC Universe Shake-Up (Exclusive)

The DC cinematic universe appears to be losing its Man of Steel.

Henry Cavill, who has played Superman in three films, is parting ways with Warner Bros., sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. Though neither side is confirming, the British actor, who first donned the blue suit for 2013's Man of Steel, and then starred in 2016's Batman v. Superman and last year's Justice League, is said to be hanging up the red cape.

Warners had been trying to enlist Cavill, who most recently co-starred in Mission: Impossible — Fallout, for a Superman cameo in Shazam!, which stars Zachary Levi and will bow April 5. But contract talks between Cavill's WME reps and Warners broke down, and the door is now closing on other potential Superman appearances.

That's because the studio has shifted its focus to a Supergirl movie, which will be an origin story featuring a teen superheroine. This effectively removes an actor of Cavill's age from the storyline's equation given that Superman, aka Kal-El, would be an infant, according to DC lore.

Furthermore, Warners isn't likely to make a solo Superman film for at least several years, according to another source. "Superman is like James Bond, and after a certain run you have to look at new actors," says a studio source. As such, Cavill will join Ben Affleck, who isn't expected to reprise his role for director Matt Reeves' forthcoming Batman stand-alone film, as a hero on the way out.

A Warners source says the Shazam! deal fell apart because of scheduling conflicts. And that is backed up by the fact that Cavill recently signed on to star in the Netflix series The Witcher. However, another source says that the Witcher commitment came after the Warners impasse, suggesting a change in Warners' strategy.

Are you gonna miss Henry's Superman?

Not bothered in the least. Best of luck to Cavill on his future endeavors.

Time for a reboot for the Justice League characters

Its kind of funny that they can make Henry's exit official but not Ben's

From what I read Ben is expected to follow.

Aquaman, Wonder Woman and Flash all to stay on though.

I’m bummed, I really am.

Of course people are already knifing him in the back with their dream casting already.

I guarantee if Bayona, McQuarrie or even Gunn wanted to do a Cavill Superman film they’d be reversing this lickety split.

Happy days. Cavill made a very wise decision.

Welp, time for a reboot of their universe with exception of Gadot's WW.

Nope reboot them all

Makes no sense keeping Gal

People see these movies for the characters not the people playing them (as evident as James Bond & Batman constant recasting being successes)

Your gonna have to let Gal go

Keep the same template & Wonder Woman will succeed regardless whos playing her

I've never dislliked Henry Cavill's Superman/Clark Kent and felt he did good.

BvS and JL with the Holy Trinity comprised of Henry,Ben and Gal worked for me chemistry wise.

The James Bond comparison is valid though too so if he's gone well then he's gone.

Gal's is the only one that's been universally praised by audiences and critics alike. It'd be foolish to reboot her take when that's the one positive they've had going for 'em.

Part of the game

What the WB is gonna do is

Wait a few years +

Get their silly side stuff out of the way

Re establish Batman first

Reboot the rest after enough time has been past

Wonder Woman does not end with Gal

You gotta accept this

As it always is with the DCEU, the casting isn't the problem. He could've been a good Superman. Such a shame WB doesn't view the character as a priority.

Absolutely!

I don’t know why they didn’t secure him for the Shazam cameo before MI6 came out.

Like I said, if a hot director wants to do a Superman film and s/he wants Cavill, they will backtrack.

Would Chris M wanna do Superman without Henry ?

There is zero business sense to replace Gal Gadot when she's the only proven commodity they have with their DC properties right now. They're not replacing her until the next series of WW films way down the road.

Time will tell

I'd like if they had an in universe soft reboot. But I'm sad to see cavill go, hope they dont shelf superman for too long.

Warner Brothers should just give Superman & his family of characters back to the heirs creator

Why did they fight to keep him legally ?

You don’t need to reboot her, just make out she wasn’t a part of it to begin with, that way a WW3 can be set in the present day. Cavill leaving is the icing on the cake of the failure of this franchise. Wonder Woman just has to become it’s own thing now, along side Nolan’s trilogy.

Hopefully they'll wait a few years and then give Marvel the rights back.

The worst part about this about that WB is shafting Superman in favor of getting a Supergirl movie off the ground. Just ridiculous.
