Here We Go Again Part 3: New Welling As Superman Rumors?

Not that Welling isn't my number one choice to play Supes, but does he even want the role? Now I wasn't around for the original casting wars, so I won't pretend to know what I'm talking about, but does Welling really want to continue playing this character for another few years? I mean he's been playing CK on tv for just about 10. Would he really want to commit himself to a film that'll take a couple of years to complete, followed by maybe another few years for the almost guaranteed sequel that big film series have committed to in recent years.

As an actor who doesn't want to be type-casted, not to mention as a executive-producer and director in the making, would Tom really take this role, disregarding any rumors and lies that claim he never wanted to play Superman? I think that's the most important to look at, before we consider whether or not they should cast him. Because if he himself doesn't want to be in the running, it's hard to think that he'll be forced to accept the role whether he's offered it or not.

But then again, for the right amount of money, anything is possible. :O

I'm thinking his agreeing to stay on the show only through a tenth season and forming a production company with at least one deal with Warner TV (Hellcats) might have had some serious strings attached.

Maybe he is tied to the company for some features as an actor, whether a Superman film was part of any deals, who knows, but I wouldn't put it past anyone at WB to accept losing a huge cash cow like Smallville as long as Tom can move onto doing the same role in a feature, which could potentially get them even more money.

No one working with franchises is going to not have a long-game in mind in dealing with them.

EW plays the odds about who might be the new movie Superman. T-Dub's odds are 8-1:

Tom Welling
Why he’s perfect: He’s kinda been auditioning for the role for the past 10 years on Smallville, and with the show ending its ten-year run (!) this season, he’s finally available to take it to the big screen.
Why he’s not: The feature film could feel like The Smallville Movie, a prospect that wouldn’t likely appeal to a studio seeking a global blockbuster. And who’s to say Welling isn’t ready to move on to non-Clark Kent roles?
Odds he’ll actually be considered: 8-in-1

The rest here: http://popwatch.ew.com/2010/10/04/lets-cast-the-new-superman-movie/

I never understood the whole odds thing. Is 8-in-1 good or bad?

All you need to know is that it's better than Nicolas Cage or Brandon Routh landing the role. :hehe:

But apparantely Cavil, Hamm, and Hammer have better chances than Tom according to EW?

It's all just a minor technicality. :o

On a side note, I love how IMDB has Tom listed as playing Clark Kent and Superman in the the 22nd episode of the season. Maybe his odds will increase once we all see him then. :awesome:

Tom's chances for getting the lead are probably slim if they want to create their own unique vision for a contemporary Superman. But hey... until I hear they've officially cast someone else, I'll still be hopeful. :)

Same here, its a long shot, but until someone's officially cast, I'll hang in and wait.

I feel another Casting Wars comic resurfacing..... :D

Using Smallville-haters thinking. Smallville's small viewership would not hurt with the general audience if he did Superman. Most people who would go see Superman may never have seen Smallville. So it wouldn't be a problem seeing Tom as Supes in a completely different background. And for thos Smallville fans (at least speaking for myself). I would be thrilled to see Tom as Supes even if the Smallville background was taken away.

That being said. I know it probably won't happen.

NY Post weighs on the Superman candidates. Author seems to prefer Bomer but admits he's tiny compared to Tom, HWSNBN, Cavill, Hamm, and the awful Armie Hammer...

Actually, the writer prefers Welling.

You know, I don't think it would be the worst thing in the world for Zack to actually consider letting "Smallville" star Tom Welling continue to carry the torch. I imagine (and hope) that we won't be getting another origin movie, so all Tom's small screen work could serve as backstory -- plus, he's got the character down pat after ten years.

:yay:

We should start sending really brilliant welling manips to Zack Snyder immediately.

Yah...ten years of retcons.

That is rich alright

And comics are extremely rich with retcons and nonsense, it doesn't mean is all crap. :o

Agreed on Watchmen. ;)

As much as I would like to see Tom, Nolan and Snyder will probably cast a different actor to avoid any connection to Smallville or SR, just the way it usually works.

I don't know if it's the way you worded it, or the fact that I too strongly dislike Hammer for Superman, but I burst into laughter the second I got to the bolded part-LOL

Someone send this to him.
In a recent interview Snyder says he lays awake at night wondering how to show superman flying over the Metropolis skyline, this will give him an idea, and hopefullly he'll get the actor too while he's at it.

Superman is about to take flight for the fifth time.
Zack Snyder, the director of moody action flicks like "300" and "Watchmen," has beat out high-profile filmmakers Tony Scott and Darren Arronofsky to helm the upcoming reboot of the superhero franchise, deadline.com confirmed.
"Super-awesome. Super-excited," the 44-year-old filmmaker told ew.com in an interview after the news broke. "I've been a fan of the character for awhile. It's really a treat and super-delight to do this."
No cast has been announced, though "Smallville" star Tom Welling has fanboys on his side, while Snyder told Variety.com that "Superman Returns'" Brandon Routh is unlikely to return.
Jon Hamm is also reportedly being considered for the role, though the "Mad Men" star has denied the talk.
"It's sort of news to me, but if the powers-that-be are thinking that, I'd like them to get in touch with me," he said on "Live with Regis and Kelly" earlier this month.
According to deadline.com, the new film will be a fresh start for the franchise, which made a disappointing return in 2006. At a reported budget of $270 million, "Superman Returns" only brought in $391 million worldwide.
Though Snyder would not confirm whether he would be using the stylized color-drained look of "300" -- which he achieved using super-imposition chroma key technique -- he said “the king of the superheroes” would probably not look anything like the heroes in "Watchmen."
"They are totally different characters, totally different worlds," Snyder told ew.com."I wouldn't want to compare them at this point."
He added that he wants to do for Superman what Nolan did for Batman.

"Think of where Batman was when Chris took that on earlier in the decade," Snyder told the entertainment website. "I think Superman is in a very similar place, in terms of being available and in terms of his relationship to where the culture was at that time. Superman is right there. He’s ready. And can I be any more cryptic?"
He's on his way, with Christopher Nolan producing Superman 3.0 and "Batman Begins" writer David S. Goyer penning the script.
Snyder is set to start working on Superman 3.0 after he completes "Sucker Punch," the sci-fi fantasy starring Vanessa Hudgens, which hits theaters in March.
The director’s latest release, "Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole," is in theaters now.

What a load of crap. Snyder's already ruled Routh out.

^^ It was obvious, is a reboot afterall. Anyway, a lot of people didn't like Routh's performance, he has not become a star like other actors of his generation for a reason.

Something is up with that Daily News poll. I voted for Welling. And they show no votes for him...Heck they don't even show his name on the results page.

LOL I know a decent amount of people want Routh back but he's leading with 55% over everyone. And like Zip said, TW results aren't even shown when you vote for him.

Anyways, it's all BS.
