Here We Go Again Part 3: New Welling As Superman Rumors?

Hamm's hot right now because Madmen is winning a boat load of awards every season, but he's too old. The other guys supposedly in contention are ten years younger.

It depends on which way they go. I hope they don't pick Hamm, anyone but him.

He's too old (39), not tall enough (6'1/2"), and too slim.

Added to all that, he doesn't even really look like Superman to me. Nice cameo on Conan's new show last night, however.

39 isn't too old. The problem is that he looks closer to 49 in most pics. (I'm exaggerating a bit, but you get my point.)

Well, yeah. That too.

He does look older than being almost 40. Probably smokes or spent a lot of time in the sun when he was younger. I don't think I look quite that old and I'm 46 almost as old as dirt.

Ya some look older then they are or younger then they are. Heck I am 25 but look a few yrs younger then I am. But yea I serious doubt they will go over 33-35 tops.

I've always been with Alex Ross in my thinking that Superman works better as a slightly older character. Thus I'd love to see that take eventually.

Hamm's got a good presence and acting chops but I agree physically he doesn't have it.

But I think they're dreaming floating around beefcakes like Manganiello and the like--please. That strikes me as the age-old dilemma with casting this part. You can either have a skinny actor that looks nothing like the character we're all used to or you can have a big fella who can't act out of a paper bag. A friend of mine was actually pondering the possibility of combining both--CG'ing the actor's face onto a bodybuilder type. Nifty idea but it sounds like too much work.

As much as I'd love to see TW do it I thought AgentPat laid out nicely how complicated that issue is, and while I'd love to be surprised and remain hopeful I'm not holding my breath either.

So where does that leave us? I think they'd be wise to look to the theater stage rather than Hollywood. But with the Nolans producing I'm pretty confident they'll do it right and find the appropriate dude for the part.

I'm not sure where people are getting this concept that we either have an amazing actor who looks nothing like Superman, or some beefcake who can't act. Manganiello is a big guy alright, but he can act just fine IMO - I've seen him on a few different programs (most recently True Blood) and I have no complaints whatsoever about his performance.

I also think he looks more like Bruce Wayne and wish he'd been originally cast in Nolans films.

It is so hard with casting. I would first want someone who can can well but then we have the visual aspect to the character, height, and muscles. Now there is actors who can act great and have good bods or get in good shape. But its always going to be hard. No one is ever going to be 100 percent it. There will probably have to be some sort of compromising on things.

Manganello's problem is that he looks nothing like Superman. Too many ethnic features.

Worked fine for Dean Cain, people accepted him as Superman for years despite the fact that it's plain to see he has asian heritage.

IMO, Manganiello - in terms of ethnic features - is much less obvious than Dean Cain and unless you've got an extremely keen eye, there's no singular glaring physical feature which marks out a certain heritage. At the very most, I would accept that he has a slight Italian-American look to him (but much less pronounced than some people), but then again, a lot of tall, dark and chiselled Superman actors could be accused of that.

^ Manganello's got a big Italian beak (He even admits this). He looks like one of my cousins. No thanks.

And Dean Cain was arguably the worst live action Superman to date.

As for joe. I think he is a pretty decent actoe. Good looks. I don't think he is to ethic as an italian to play supes. But hey to each there own. If we really want to get in race card here. What is welling, reeve, reeves, and some of the other live action superman/superboy actors?

Joe would be one of the hottest Supermen to date, that's for sure.

........because that's what matters in casting this role, right? Right...?? ;)

His face is all wrong for the part.

I don't know, Superman has always been portrayed as a pretty pale, yet square-jawed, guy with blue eyes and black hair.

Hamm can act, but his face and body are too slim.

Mangiello has a good body, but his dark hairs and tan skin (it's more than just his Italian nose for me, although that probably doesn't help) make him seem wrong for the part.

Thing is, I don't think I've seen a single guy that looks better than Tom for the part. Physically, he is everything I think Superman should be.

Maybe he won't get the role, but I'm not sure how anyone could look better for the part than him.

Oh I totally agree with you there, he was a terrible Superman - I was merely referring to the fact that his fairly ethnic features didn't really matter to a lot of people.

Yea at the time superman was on I didn't know he was part japanese heck cain was probably the most ethic superman actor. He was french candian, welsh, and japanese. I still wonder what all the other superman/superboy ethinics were.

Enjoy Hamm as an actor...Not as Superman. He may not be too old for the first movie. But, Warner wants sequels...especially, with Bats ending. And figuring a movie every 2-3 years. Nobody wants a 50yr old Superman.

Totally I just wish wb/nolan/snyder would not so dam mum on everything. At least give us fans something to tease us with to hold us over to casting starts to happen.

It's the smartest and most inexpensive PR they could ever hope for. Having the fans whipped up into a casting frenzy over the next Superman before they've even started looking makes them very happy filmmakers.

I like Joe Mangienello well enough. He has an amazing body, and he does a fine job on True Blood - but I think he fits the role of a Werewolf much better than he does Superman. :)

I'd still be excited to see Cavill get a shot at it (only if Tom is ruled out, of course).

Cavill's a good actor, and has the Supermanly "look" that I think is important. I just don't see a downside to him.

Would be nice for cavill but we don't even known if he wants to do the role now. Comparred to yrs ago. Wouldn't mind him. But ya I get why they don't say anything. Bit at least give a few dam details that wont spoiler anything big would be nice. But hopefully things will end up going well for the film.

I totally agree. I had remembered hearing his name before Returns came out, and was aware of him being on some cable show. But I finally saw the Tudors sometime after Returns was out and immediately thought he's be a good Superman, not knowing it was the guy people were rooting for.

Would be a solid pick. But like I pointed out we don't know what the casting details are for the film yet. Or even if cavill would want to do the role now. Heck it could change things if they only want a ceetain age range or if tghey only wanted american born actors. But hopefully we get more details on castings soon.

Not really Welling-in-movies related, but just spotted the news about a potential Batman TV show coming out in 2012. What are the odds we see thread after thread asking for Superman to show up on the Batman show - and that Welling gets mentioned/asked for that?? :)

Saw that news, alot of folks don't believe its true. Would be cool and all. But I serious doubt wb would want a tv batman. When films is the game they want for certain characters. Sure after nolan third film we probably wont have another batman movie for awhile. But they would have gl/flash and what ever other characters get to film stage. To tie us over for next 5-7 yrs to they decide to do another batman.
