My Star Trek Review:

I'd like to start off by saying I am old fan of the series but lost interest around the time Voyager was finishing. Star Trek was getting old for me as I was maturing into an adult and it seemed to have served it purpose. I admit that there were curtain expectations for this new movie as I heard it was a fresh new look and attitude, so I wondered, can Star Trek serve me once again?

Rather then recite what everyone has said and will say about the look I'll make a point that JJ did the right thing in updating the look of everything, even the stylized way it was shot was the right thing to do. Star Trek had to look different otherwise it wouldn't stand out so much from the others. This is a big plus for me. The characters were a lot of fun to watch, they all had a great deal of energy in their performances, they all had a place in the story so it didn't feel like they were just thrown in there just for their name sake. I loved Urban's McCoy, and I think DeForest would have loved him as well, it was spot on. Kirk was Kirk minus the Shatner-esk delivery, he was believeable and drew from the essence that was Kirk, I loved Pines attitude. Spock was always going to be a hard one to pull off, how do you pull off a charater with no emotions yet connect with the audience. Consiquence was the key here, which is exactly happened. He lost so much yet put on a brave face. Lucky for that human half of him otherwise he would have been a bore. That "young" factor will help drive the character in the next movie, but they will need to concentrate on his freindship with Kirk and McCoy for his character to go anywhere next time. I wont go into the other charaters, but helped drive the story in equal length and drew from their orginal charater, and none of them (Pavel included) annoyed me. Nero the bad guy, wasn't the greatest of enemies, he was the typical revenge plot device. I understand that this was more about establishing the Enterprise crew and their destiny, but his dynamic only tagged along, it didn't create that fear factor that a good villian should have. Oh and there is one more character worth mentioning and thats the USS Enterprise NCC 1701, my god she is a sexy ship, her elegance once again graces the universe.

The great thing about this new Trek is that Abrams wasn't afraid to give us concequence and shock. Some of the events that took place were indeed quite shocking not only for a general audience but for fans as well. The plot was exciting yet simple, it found the right amount of balance for a beginnings story with plenty of action, tasteful humor, and strong characters, well paced out. It never felt rushed or forced anywere accept for the Ice Planet scenes with Scotty. Sure he needed to be introduced but it felt like a very brief interlude from the story itself. If a little more time was spent with Old Spock, Kirk, and Scotty it may have eased it a little, however I understand why they were in such a rush to get off the Planet and back on the Enterprise. One major gripe I have is the lack of thought provoking story, Trek has always been a technical series, it gave us something to think hard about which helped give the story more depth. I know they needed to change the image of the franchise, but that doesn't mean dumb it down for us. The final battle is always something to look forward to in a Trek movie, this one was very pretty both with the space battle and onboard the Narada with Kirk and Spock fighting the Romulans. I can't wait to see an all-out space battle with Federation starships and Klingon battle cruisers, that will be a sight to behold.

All in all, this was what the new Star Trek needed to be, bold, exciting, amazing effects, but most importantly a lot of fun. If the villian was stronger and the plot was more thought provoking it would have been perfect, however i still consider this one of the best Trek movies ever, it served its purpose for me. I can't wait to see what Abrams does with the next one. Star Trek is back.

8.5/10 :ST:

My Star Trek review:

I have never really been a real Star Trek fan,but I must say that I enjoyed the movie tonight. I thought the movie was a visually stunning, fun, adventurous and action packed escapist movie. Although to me most of the jokes were crap, and integrity wise when it came to acting and tone it was excessive at times and obnoxious. Most of the music was disappointing because it didn't sound good IMO,I thought the first hour wasn't as enjoyable as the the rest of the movie, but perhaps I was into following what was going on too much to enjoy. The main characters were decent and so was the dialog, the rest of the acting was decent too. I don't believe in good acting,to me you are either acting crappy or decent,I don't know much about Star Trek,I liked the certain conflicts in the movie.

But,I will buy this movie on dvd for a shallow reason, and because it was an adventurous, fun, action, and sci fi escapist movie to mentally digest. Based on my lack of understanding when it comes to understanding certain things in general,I have no choice as of now to also say that this movie wasn't unique. I thought Anton's character and Scotty were very annoying characters at times. I totally refuse to give this movie further credit based on what I acknowledged(regarding the identification of what is a unique concept),doing that would be IMO too generous and foolish. As far as what I understand how something works and how it should work, this movie succeeds on that level, what I mean is that there wasn't a well that was stupid and makes no sense moment. I am fine what the characters being decent because I also don't have any actual emotional attachment to them,so yeah **** it(and accuracy to real life science). I felt that at times, the movie went into quirky attitude territory,I don't know why. I thought the main characters were pretty conventional. The movie won't change my life,or make me care about other things, and that sits fine by me. I don't like it when particular movies I want to see try to be pretentious,it insults my intelligence, empty objectives and a waste of space are what they are.

additional pros:

-coherent story

-good cinematography

-tension/drama/suspense

additional cons:

VOID

So in conclusion,I am giving this movie an 8/10.

Just came back...I'd give it a 10/10. Easily best movie I've seen this year.

I will keep my review short.

As a non fan of the Star Trek franchise with little to no knowledge of any of the mythos surrounding the series and the movies, I really liked this movie. The trailers already had me hooked and anything JJ Abrams has my interest. This movie is really well shot, it has great CGI, it has a great new and young cast, and it has great comedy.

The action is a little lacking and I would have loved to see a longer Spock and Kirk fight on the bridge. I know Star Trek is full of cheese and camp but I thought this movie did it pitch perfect. I did not roll my eyes or laugh once during this movie for the wrong reasons. The cast delivered their lines and the plot was emotional and gripping at times with great comedy to break up the heaviness. As mentioned, the cast not only were hired for their slight resemblance to the original cast, they were hired because they can actual act and they were all actualy great in this film.

I did have some minor annoyances. For instance, Winona. I really don't get why she was in this movie. Seeing her I thought to myself that she did not belong in this movie. Chekov's accent was a bit annoying and it seemed a little forced to me. It needed to be toned down a bit. Leonard Nemoy showing up was a good nod to the fans but he overstayed his welcome. I understand why he was in this and why Abrams went with the alternate time line was to not anger hardcore fans but his fan service went above and beyond and Spock Sr. was in this movie too long. Nero was an alright villian but he was never menacing enough to me. I wish that he would have had a fight scene instead of just sitting in a chair and barking orders and demands.

Overall, I really liked this movie. It was just a great film with everything a movie needs and it did a great job at restarting an old franchise and revamping it to fit with today's younger audience. I loved the entire cast and I cannot wait to see the sequel.

8.5/10

Love the criticism over Chekov's accent!

Love the criticism over Chekov's accent!

It was a great tribute to the original series....loved it.

Hell.....they even had the computer not understand him at first.

It's like complaining about Urban being too "buggy" playing McCoy. For the characters, that is the character!

Which makes for some fun in-jokes like when McCoy said "I like Him" in reference to Spock when he first meets him. Or how cocky Kirk is when he takes the test, that and the ending swagger was pure Kirk.

Exactly....Bones was always complaining about one thing or another.

One thing else I really disliked but forgot to mention: The green girl Kirk was trying to sex up at the beginning of the movie. I know it was a reference to the series but it was overly not needed.

I will spread the good word for this movie as well. I want to destory Wolverine's legs as much as I can. I will see this multiple times.

So the movie didn't have enough action? I remember hearing the same thing about Iron Man and I thought that film had plenty of action.

This thread is making me drool...

No the action was fine, but the final battle was a bit lacking in the Nero department. I just wanted to see a big longer Spock vs Kirk and Nero didn't get his hands dirty once and his only kill was off screen. The final battle wasn't as great as I thought it could have been but it was still a great movie. When you watch it, you think you are going to see Spock vs Nero.

Just got back from seeing it, and...well... long story short...BEAUTIFUL in all ways a movie can be.

Now is it perfect? Of course not. No movie is, but this movie came damn near close to it. I have too much to mention so I will hit some highlights.

~Loved the opening with the camera silently panning across the ship and the sonar sound in the background.

~The part where the girl gets sucked into space and everything goes silent was for me pure art. I hate in movies when there is sound in space. So that moment made me happy and it made the visuals stand out.

~The visuals: the colors in this film were astounding.

~The characters: I enjoyed Spock and Kirks relationship soo much. And Bones, OMG Urban did wonders with that role.

~The scene where Urban doses Kirk to get him on the enterprise and Kirk reacts and he starts swelling and Bones is trying to find the antedote is hillarious. Bones: "Do you have numb tongue?" Kirk: "NUMB TONGUE?!" Great moment! Also, when Bones kept calling Spock "pointy eard bastard.", and the "green blooded hobb-goblin" comment.

~The score, while a little to choral in some spots and maybe a little too emotional in others, it was a masterful companion to the visuals on screen.

~All the Scotty moments. Loved when he beamed Spock and Kirk right into a group of Nero's men on board his ship. And the battle that ensued with the phasers was visually stunning.

~The sounds in general. When the ships went to warp. I loved that sound effect, and the visual effect itself. To add to that, the scene that introduces Sulu. Pike: "Did you forget the emergency Break?" Sulu's reaction was hilarious.

~I loved the semi-retro design of the bridge. It was slick and shiny, but little things made it retain that 60's and 70's retro feel.

~Nero's interaction with the Captain of the Kelvin. When he comes on screen I love how casual he is. Nero "Well, hello, Christopher. Im Nero." The way he deliver's that line is brilliant.

~The way Kirk acts while taking the Cabiashi Maru was brilliant. I know I botched that spelling but you know what I mean.

There is so much more I could praise in this film. However, there is one complaint I had, and its a stupid complaint. Some of the aliens. Some I liked, but one I felt that was unnecessary was the big eyed woman who helped deliver kirk. It just distracted me from the moment of Kirks birth. But that is a very minor complaint, and I am glad that was my biggest complaint.

I give this film a 9/10. I am considering 10/10, but I want to give it time to sink in. Plus, I am seeing it again tomorrow and after that I may give it a 10/10.

Shut up. There couldn't have been reasonably anymore action in the movie.

We don't need a ****ing action scene every three minutes like that Rush Hour garbage. What we got was fine.

People can't complain about the action in the movie. There was enough.

Settle down.

I gave my review and I wanted to see Nero fight. My review, my opinion.

9/10

I think this movie will give Terminator and Transformers a run for biggest movie of the year. It's all that I expected and more.

The movie reboots the franchise in a way that is very respectful of the original material. There is one major change that I think might be hard for big time Trekkies to accept, and it is probably the most shocking change of the movie. There is also one relationship that some may question.

But I will say this, J.J. Abrams, is a brilliant story teller, and he understands pacing and action.

There is really no other Star Trek movie to compare to this film. It is a whole new breed. The movie never lets up for a moment. It' balls to the wall action and adventure straight through.

The real standouts here are Quinto and Pine. They are the glue of this movie. Also Urban is another great standout here. My only complaint was that there wasn't more of him.

I personally hate the term "reboot". I don't think of this as a reboot, I think of it as a continuation of the Star Trek lore, from a fresh perspective. And I for one can't wait until we see the next adventure.

Most definately...it gets your attention....a nice touch.

I've been a Trekkie since 1966.....loved this movie.

Just realize, that Kirk and Khan never even see each other face to face in Wrath of Khan. There's literally no actual fighting in that movie.

I saw the film at a screening tonight. I don't have time to type a full review now, but I will say this: This film was dripping with COPIOUS AMOUNTS OF AWESOMENESS.
