you have valid points. i still enjoyed the film very much. here is my response

-he was pretty one-dimensional i agree. i would have liked it if he was royalty, and the destruction of ALL his people made an impact instead of his wife and child. and i don't see how he could blame the entire federation on poor spock's attempt. the destruction of vulcun should have been the main end of the revenge. that would have made more sense. not going against the entire federation.

-i agree with this. even if you do amazing things, what typically takes 8 years, you do in a couple of hours doesn't make sense. i'm sure all the members who are at year 7.9 aren't happy about that. they could have given him a medal or something. that super-promotion would never happen in the real military.
he pretty much single handedly saved Starfleet and Earth. Battlefield promotions do happen like that. I am in the Navy and I know a guy who saved the captain from falling off the ship and he was promoted on the spot.He went up one rank...now imagine if he saved the whole Navy

the suspension makes sense tho because they were in the middle of the briefing. so i don't think that was stupid.

-you can't really argue against a scientific principle that is science fiction. we dont' know about red matter or how it works. so you can't really say it doesn't make sense.

-i don't think the barren planet was stupid. it was a coincidence. there's a difference. any and every movie that has a hero against unsurmountable odds is because of a coincidance.

-yes and no. the reason the captain went on the mission was because they were asked to come. both captains knew it was a suicide mission. the skydiving mission were not the most important members but those with "combat" experience. the reason why kirk and spock went was because spock knew of their heritage, and kirk knew of the ship.

--yeah i understand what you're saying, but it didn't bother me as much as it bothered you.

i do agree that JJ Abrams has a certain style also. it's funny how people make fun of bay for his creative choices, but Abrams does that also. I like them both so i never had a problem with either director.

however the inner workings of Star Fleet are quite different from our military

It seems to me that Kirk just saved Pike. It was Spock who saved the Earth, and Scotty who saved the Enterprise and its crew. Kirk yelled "Do it do it do it!"

i was under the impression it was all Kirk's plan...which is why he kept telling Spock "It's gonna work...dont worry it's gonna work"

But it was still Spock that...you know...did things. Do I get a medal for telling someone "Hey, run into that burning building and save someone"? :)

I saw Star Trek yesterday and thought it was great fun. I will be seeing it again, and I’m looking forward to a Star Trek sequel, which is something I didn’t think I would be saying anytime soon.

there are standard structures. it's still a military, even if it's different from our own. and not just the military, any system that has some sort of hierarchy follows a pecking order. i wouldn't let a person who has ONE experience under his belt, even if it is grand, to captain a ship and be responsible for many many individuals.

i agree with this. and it was sulu who manuvered the ship.

in the grand scheme of things, i guess the whole thing was kirk's idea.

Yeah, that's a little hard to swallow. A promotion? Absolutely. Captain?

Eh...

Hell, they could have just done one of those "Three Years Later" screens...

Which he never would've been able to do had Kirk not taken control as Captain and made the call to go after Nero.

That's almost like saying a coach shouldn't get credit for the plays on the field.

Blasphemy you speak about the Great TDK...stone him stone him:woot:

i loved TDK. but i thought BB was a better made movie. it was more coherent. TDK tried to be grand.

i like to think of it as BB being a DELICIOUS cheeseburger that is perfect in every way and hits the spot, and TDK being a huge thanksgiving meal, which was a little dry. great meal, but something keeps it from being perfect.

oh yeah, loved the movie, but hated him being promoted to captain in a matter of days. what takes 8 years, he did in a week? gimme a break :funny: i feel bad for all those who are at 7 years and 11 months of training.

i think a 3 years later would have been much much better.

they made changes, i honestly thought throughout the film that spock would be captain and krik first officer in this world/timeline. i can just hear the fan crying, and understandably too. but in THIS specific movie, that would have made more sense.

A coach shouldn't get credit for the actions. The strategy, yes. But all the strategy in the world means nothing if your players don't execute.

That doesn't bother me at all...by the end of the film, I felt that Kirk totally earned the rank of Captain. Show me a cadet that went through the exact same stuff he did and i'd say the same.

I guess that's just me...

Anyone love the pan over to Spock's reaction after Kirk cheated on the KM test?

That face and how he said it. "I don't know." Thought that was funny as hell.

And I don't know if it was meant to be humorous, Nero's strange rehab greeting.

I think I was the only one who chuckled when Nero went, "Hello Christopher, I'm Nero." (paraphrased)

I think I was also the only one who went "ooh/burn" when Spock brought up Kirks father during the Star Fleet hearing.

Kirk and Spock BOTH ran into the burning building and rescued someone.

I thought it was amazing. Easily the best film of 2009 so far. J.J. Abrams and company have crafted a film that not only caters to the Trekkies, but also to casual audiences. It is fun, exciting, and emotionally involving. The action is terrific, especially the opening sequence with the U.S.S. Kelvin and the spacediving scene; the action at times channeled the best in the adventure movie genre, such as Indiana Jones and Star Wars. The special effects were awesome. The acting was terrific, though the highlights were definitely Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto. One final mention, the music from Michael Giacchino was epic and has the beauty of his music from LOST combined with the spirit of classic John Williams music. I loved this film. A definite must see.

A 10/10!!!!

i laughed at both instances also.

So firemen should be promoted to Chief for doing their jobs?

Seriously, though, the point is that people were saying things like "Kirk was promoted to Captain because he saved the world", when in fact, he didn't really do anything concrete to do so.

Nevermind the fact that he's not actually qualified, but the sheer financial logistics of trusting god knows how many billions upon billions of credits of equipment with someone that reckless are mind boggling.

Yeah, those transmission of Nero I just wanted to put The Joker up on that screen. it was just screaming to be done.

That would be something really cool to do now that we have seen the film.

With clever editing, it could be really cool.

Just saw it and I loved it. I think this is probably one of the best franchise reboots to date. The original universe is still very much intact and they set up a nice way to give this its own legs to stand on without worrying about continuity from theoriginal series.

Just saw Star Trek and I gotta to say its pretty damn good. The best sci-fi space movie ever and I'm not even a Star Trek fan. Quinto stole the show though as Spock.

Kirk was promoted because his father was seen as a hero and he just basically did the same thing but with help. He saved that ship from being destroyed by warning Pike and he destroyed Nero so why not give it to him?

I agree. This film was amazing! I can't think of one bad thing to say about it. It's the best movie of this year so far with Watchmen a close second. :D

While Spock was in command of the Enterprise...he was going to go in the opposite direction of Earth and join up with other ships....Kirk took charge and got them to earth in time to save it.
