Infinity War "I Will Bathe The Starways In Your Blood!" The Thanos / Josh Brolin Thread - Part 1

So good seeing Thanos with all his generals in one shot.

I don’t think I’ve ever been more pumped to see a character appear in a movie. Cap is my current favorite on the mcu but Thanos might take that title very soon. Not just favorite villain but favorite character period.

Anyone considered that Thanos might be right? That what he is doing is actually for the benefit of the universe? That would be very interesting.

Of course not.

It's the old "overpopulation might become a big factor in the coming centuries - should we just cull 3 billion of the earth's population?" philosophical thing.

Answer being, of ****ing course not.

Thanos is operating on a hypothetical - he doesn't know that the universe is screwed by having too many beings in it, it's a theory. Might play out that way, might not, there might be some other solution.

You don't just go slaughter people in the trillions on that. Guy's more complex than a simple mustache-twirler, but he's still the worst living organism to ever be born into the Marvel universe, in terms of deeds and ambitions.

God it makes me laugh over in the BP section how many people seem to think Killmonger's justified, and not a totally awful human being.

:oldrazz: Sign of the times, I guess. Crazy.

Guy's basically...Farrakhan, if he'd been a Navy SEAL for 10 years, and inherited total control over the most advanced military on earth.

Basically...chocolate Super-Hitler.

In the Times we live in I can see why, aided by Jordan's charismatic performance, there are people who understand and sympathise how a life affected by loss and discrimination can be twisted. Though personally i do wonder if Killmonger had been played by a less handsome and\or charismatic actor if certain audiences would've immediately seen through his speeches.

Perhaps its not simply about over population, in the physical sense. But maybe something more esoteric. Like i dunno, too much life force being used is literally draining the universe. The comics have gone into weird stuff like that before.

Not sure it's a "handsome" thing. Seems more a "slavery was wrong, so absolutely anything goes in retaliation, fine by us" thing.

It's funny that a lot of those people forget that it was other Africans who sold the slaves to the British/US etc.

Every villain thinks they're right.

Since those parts will not be in the film, Thanos will get a tie-in novel detailing his origin story.

The article was updated claiming that the publisher contacted them to say the book is not canon and that they were mistaken, but given the Infinity War logo on the cover and the fact that the writer consulted with Marvel Studios when writing, I think they're trying damage control because the synopsis is kinda spoilery:

fguhehbh5ntnnborxghc.jpg

Space. Reality. Mind. Power. Time. Soul.

Before creation itself, there were six singularities. Then the universe exploded into existence, and the remnants of these systems were forged into concentrated ingots…

Infinity Stones.

Only beings of immense power can hope to wield these stones, but for those who are worthy, the powers of a god await.

Thanos is one such being. But he wasn’t always.

Born on a doomed world and cast out by his people for his genius, physical deviancy, and pragmatic but monstrous ideas, Thanos is determined to save the galaxy from the same fate as his homeworld… no matter how many billions have to die.

Learn the origins of the most formidable foe the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange, and Black Panther have ever faced—a foe whom even a group of remarkable people, pulled together to fight the battles nobody else could, will fail to stop….

Dread it. Run from it. Destiny still arrives.

Thanos is here.

I’m sure your comment won’t go well on this forum but it’s interesting. I was watching Amistad the other day and it made me think about this. I’d say buying and selling slaves are equally as evil and it’s odd that some people still hold slavery against white people to this day but give no thoughts to the other side of the coin.

This is random, but having recently watched Winter Soldier again, I noticed a marked similarity (and a shared theme in the antithesis of "the end justifying the means") between Thanos's balance doctrine and Alexander Pierce's thwarted mission of "bring[ing] order to the lives of 7 billion people by sacrificing 20 million." Thanos is essentially on the cusp of reifying Hydra's long-term goals, albeit on a universal scale.

Are y'all really about to make an argument about slavery?:o

Really sharp observation.

I'm not absorbing white people of blame... at all. The whole thing was abhorrent and a disgrace to humanity. I was just pointing out that it was other Africans who made profit as well. Killmonger and people like him conveniently forget about all that.

Pretty much. Neither are justifiable - there's a difference between Thanos being complex & three-dimensional and being understandable, because to any sane person he's totally not.

"Maybe the universe as a whole might get overpopulated someday the way my homeworld did - eep, better get to murdering half of 'em, I'm a prime-powerful individual, guess I get to choose who keeps breathing and who doesn't."

I know, I’m agreeing with you.

Godwin's Law comes into play. Hitler thought he was bettering society by what he was doing.

Supply and demand, if no one was buying...would they be selling?

Possibly slaughtering prisoners, if no one's buying?

Anyway...
I hope Thanos is correct that the universe is currently at risk of collapse (or whatever he thinks will happen if no solution is found).
Because him being right about the issue but totally wrong about the solution is interesting.

Imagine in an alternate timeline, 'good' Thanos suggests using Pym Particles to miniaturise entire civilizations to lessen the strain on the universe, instead of killing half of it.
Even if he tried to do it without consent, we wouldn't hold him in so poor a light in comparison.

So does Thanos really want to “ rule the universe”? I’ve read a few reviews that use that phrase. But it seems like he just wants to restore his idea of balance, not necessarily make everyone his slave.

Jim Starlin has seen it and is pleased to see his greatest creation done justice:

"The Avengers the Infinity War! I really have to watch what I say here, so as to not spoil the many surprises this film holds (even for me). So let me stick with generalities, with a few specifics tossed in at the end, concerning Josh Brolin. Visually spectacular, as are all the Marvel movies. But this film hits emotional depths few of the others have even come close to, yet humor takes center stage at all the rights moments. There are a couple times my chest constricted from what I was seeing, making me want to cry. You’ll recognize those instances when you watch the film. Brolin is an incredible Thanos, moving and emoting just as I tried to portray him in the comics. The movie’s two and a half running time shoots past nearly unnoticed. The thing is though, I feel I’m going to have to view the film a number of more times before I get a solid grip on just how good it is. Still at that rather stunned point. Yes, I know my opinion should be considered a bit biased, because of my connection to the production but the Russos, Markus, McFeely and everyone else involved in this film get my heartfelt thanks for bringping everyone’s favorite Titan to life in the best way possible, in a jaw-droppingly awesome fashion. Ten out of ten thumbs up. BTW: a special thanks to Ryan Potter for all his help at the after party."
