Infinity War "I Will Bathe The Starways In Your Blood!" The Thanos / Josh Brolin Thread - Part 1

Kilmonger was nowhere near as good, neither was jordans performance. Just mbj doing his usual mbj performance.

I think MBJ is better than Thanos. Thanos was good , but he's not as good as Killmonger imo. In performance and character he's stronger, more compelling and more interesting than Thanos imo.

If we're talking about who succeeded and who had the higher kill count, Thanos wins that, but he still doesn't make my top 5 comic book film villains. I know there are fans who think he's better than even Ledger's Joker.

Fair enough. I don't agree that he's that high up when you look at him in the context of all the villain portrayals we've had over a few decades of Cbm films.

But again, Thanos wouldn't be in the top 5 on my own 10 ten rankings.

He's still among the elite class of characters and performances , but I can't put him up with the very best, at least not yet. I'll wait for IW 2 to see if he cracks my top 5.

I loved Killmonger. That being said, Loki was my favorite MCU villain...and then came Thanos :o

Killmonger didn’t do much for me. He had a good introduction then disappears until he shows up in Wakanda. Then has a good scene when he was with his father and that’s it. I understand why people enjoyed him but he just didn’t have enough scenes for me to say he was fleshed out. Thanos just had a whole movie that was really about his journey.

Brolin was incredible as Thanos! He was my favourite character in the film.

I though ilm or weta did Thanos, but props to digital domain for reals.

Hmmmm......I saw an article in an online paper down here that claims Weta did most of the Thanos work.

Anyway, having seen IW 3x I believe that Thanos is a serious contender for best cbm villain ( even challenging Ledger's Joker, which is a big statement, coming from me).

I thought the MCU had peaked with Hela last year but Thanos was next level. The scenes with Gamora really helped develop his character and motivations - loved the scene with child Gamora at the end, especially the expressiom on Thanos' face when she asks what it cost, and he says "Everything."

The Russos clearly realised that this had to be as much Thanos ' film as anyone else's.

Whoa, so ILM's not the prime effects house for the MCU anymore?

I knew WETA's been involved too for a while now, along with some lesser companies, but just assumed given they did Hulk that ILM would be handling the Thanos stuff too.

Lol at Killmonger being Joker tier

Totally agree, and Thanos' story is better written, in that he actually fulfills his destiny, rather than being a one and done bad guy. That moment where he tells Gamora that he's the only one who knows what has to be done and has the will to do it, is absolutely brilliant - you actually believe that he has that kind of absolute, but warped, conviction.

It's a little too early to start drawing comparisons to previously feted movie antagonists; I prefer to judge Brolin's performance on its own merits for the time being. That said, Marvel deserves all the props for getting this sort of mammoth, otherworldly/alien presence just right on the big screen, something rival studios have attempted with arguably less-than-stellar results.

The meme potential with Thanos knows no bounds.

And yes he is a superior character to Killmonger, who I like a lot.

Killmongers anger and pain is understandable. But ultimately he is a power hungry monster. And his plot is a bit dumb. I mean what is sending Wakadan weapons into the world going to really achieve? Thematically it's interesting... But his end game felt a bit tacked on really.

He absolutely is.
If you had a 'villain checklist' Killmonger ticks every single one of them.
He's the most compelling villain in years.

Debatable. He didn't pull me in like Joker did or Thanos, Loki and Hela managed to do. He was good, just not great.

I never doubted the Russos could deliver a solid villain with their select offerings in Pierce, Winter Soldier, and Zemo even with limited screen time, but boy o boy did they deliver one for the ages with this Thanos. Much like other top villains of other movies, not just superheroes, he carries this movie and it wouldn't nearly be this good without this performance. Whether it's the cgi work, voice, nobility, screen presence, it's just effortless and not over the top which where most villains fall short. One more movie of this Thanos goodness could solidify him as amongst an all time great imo.

Why does everyone like Killmonger ? An honest question, because I dont see anything special about him. MBJ basically played himself, the writing wasn't great either.

I like his motivations. But when it comes to performance, he definitely doesn't come near Brolin and Ledger.

I can't speak for anyone else, but for me, what makes a great villain is;

1) His plan makes sense on 'some' level.
You don't condone the play but you at least 'understand' it and most importantly the villain understands it and has complete conviction.

2) In the villain's mind, they are the hero of the story.
From the heroes point of view, they are the hero/star and the heroes are the antagonist standing in their way

3) The Villain forces the hero to grow and change.
The villain forces the hero to question themselves. The hero is put into the darkest most difficult situation and it shakes them to the core.
The hero comes out the overside forever changed.

4) The villain is a physical or mental challenge for the hero.
Intimidating on an intellectual or physical level.
You have to fear for the hero or what's the point.

Killmonger ticks every single one of those boxes.
Killmonger elevates Black Panther just like Thanos elevates the Avengers.
If I'm being honest, I thought apart from Loki all the Marvel movie villains (the Marvel Netflix villains are great) were all rubbish until Vulture, Killmonger and now Thanos.
