I'm Not Messing Around, I'm Doing Important Stuff in The Superhero Cinematic Civil War Thread - Part 61

Casually acting like there isn't another two hours outside of this scene that suck :o

Why? Too deep for small minds?

I'm still bummed we never got the Ava DuVernay New Gods film.

She probably could've persuaded Oprah to be Granny. :o

I remember all the hate she got from idiots online when she was doing the New Gods movie. And their rationale was because that Wrinkle in Time adaptation she did was apparently not very good (as if that completely negated all of her other work). Ana is too good for this genre.

In a perfect world, DuVernay would’ve been the one to write and direct MCU X-Men. Especially after her “When They See Us” show on Netflix. It was so intense, chilling and effective.

But I digress.

Bad people being bad doesn't change that how she adapted A Wrinkle in Time was actually a really good example of why she would of been an ill fit for a New Gods movie imo. All her work before that was very different, much smaller is scale and scope. Once she was given a larger budget and asked to do an adventure flick, she was completely lost at sea and the result was a very poor movie. So why should she have done a New Gods flick after that?

Like imagine if Gerwig had failed with Barbie. I don't think suddenly she gets to make Narina. But she proved she could handle it. Just like Nolan did with Begins, Denis with 2049, and Coogler with Black Panther.

Jessica Jones Season 2

Another stellar season of superhero television under my belt :yay:

I'm sympathetic to the general fan consensus that the second season wasn't as consistently mesmerizing as the first, but to be fair my personal expectations weren't that high. David Tennant would be an almost impossible act to follow in any context, and the novelty factor would obviously be long gone by the time the second season rolled around...

What really matters is that Krysten Ritter has created one of the most fascinating television characters in recent history. It may come across as disingenuous to be worried about spoilers in a series that's been off the air for years, but I'll just say that Jessica's deep draughts of bitterness, regret, paranoia, and fear of abandonment are a lot easier to contextualize after this season's revelations.

What this show is really about is how trauma can never be managed through unhealthy practices, and how it's impossible to outrun anything. A person far wiser than myself once said that folks who think they have nothing left to lose haven't really thought things through. There's always something new to discover, and there will always be other folks we meet along the road who might be willing to help carry some of our load, if we're only willing to give them a chance. Pretty heady stuff for what many 'critics' consider to be a throwaway television genre...

Anyway, Jessica Jones (the character) is too valuable to be banished to guest star status on future seasons of Born Again. As far as I'm concerned, she's just as deserving of her own reboot as Matt Murdock...

One concern I do have is about Trish's trajectory. After the abuse she faced in her youth I'm really hoping to see the character end up in a good place, though I fear I see where her arc is heading. Hope I'm wrong...

Next up: Jessica Jones Season 3

Got another fan of season 2, hell yeah.

Just because someone does a good indie movie doesn't always mean they can handle a big franchise film or big budget movie. Not every director can make that transition as well as, say... Ryan Coogler did. Or Christopher Nolan.

Yeah -- an animated series is nice and all; but but what I really want to see is this.^

... And also the discourse about which short men and tall women they could cast....

I was having a look at the Wrinkle in Time page and came across:
During production, DuVernay asked McBride to be as flexible as possible on visual effects sequences to enable her to make changes and incorporate new ideas during shooting.
Oh. So I guess that's why it looks like that. :o

Directors really need to learn about special and visual effects and what it takes to make them. Then they wouldn't ask for ridiculous stuff like that.
