I'm Not Messing Around, I'm Doing Important Stuff in The Superhero Cinematic Civil War Thread - Part 61

In the end, Superman's and FF's relative quality likely depends on which is your brand. DC fans are more likely to have enjoyed Superman and vice versa for FF. I loved both movies, but FF did more for me personally and I overall liked it more. Is that partly dictated by the fact I am more of a Marvel guy, and FF is one of my favorites within Marvel? More than likely yes, that plays a factor. And that's fine. We like what we like. I don't need a majority to agree with me or for FF to beat Superman in some kind of loyalty to a corporate war I don't benefit from. All that matters to me is did I like the movie, and the answer is a resounding yes. And even if it doesn't beat Superman, it is doing well and all signs point to me getting more FF in the future. And Superman for that matter.

So, in the immortal words of Professor Hulk, I see this as a total win!

Now on a personal level

FF had that space chase/birth sequence which I think is top 10 all time CBM action set piece. That was easily best sequence in CBM this year for me.

I struggled to stay awake during that scene. I don’t know if that was fatigue or that it wasn’t hitting with me that well. But it probably says more about me than the quality of the scene itself.

I liked both films. But I loved Superman. I can’t wait to see it several more times. With FF, I thought that it was good but not great. The cast did great but there was just something lacking in the film. My wife also liked it, but she put it this way: ā€œit’s weird that a movie’s plot could center around the destruction of earth and all life, but still feel like it has no stakes.ā€ I think that sums up my issue with it 100%. But I don’t know why that was. I guess that I just couldn’t buy Galactus as a villain.

I couldn't disagree more. Marvel films tend to be jokey, but FF took the situation very seriously and was largely based on solving the problem of Galactus and it had actual background people reacting to the situation. I loved Thor Ragnarok, but for example that movie takes a huge detour onto Sakaar and focuses a lot on the Grandmaster and only occasionally goes back to Hela until they can get back there, but in FF I feel like Galactus looms over the entire movie.

They took it seriously I suppose. But I’m not sure that I felt like I was supposed to take it seriously.

My views on these films is probably a funhouse mirror version of yours. Like you I liked both quite a bit. But unlike you I thought Superman was far superior. FF was fun and all but a lot of it didn’t resonate with me. (I thought they played up Reed’s guilt and self doubt and then dropped that whole portion of his character arc for instance.)

But I’m definitely a DC guy and Superman is my favorite character in all of fiction. So that’s probably why

Now the way your wife felt about FF is exactly how I felt about Superman.

I thought that cast did the very best that they could with the script, but I still don't understand how watching Clark get his ass handed to him on multiple occasions and being around questionable heroes made this some masterpiece. Yeah they had that whole international incident subplot, but it felt hollow and I still don't get what the actual hook of that movie was besides Supes getting beat up and yelling about being just as human as other people when he's a whole alien.

But that's just my take.

I'm pretty much right on board with you.

Captain America: Brave New World

First time seeing this. I had bought a ticket to support the film while it was in theatres and recently added it to my digital collection, but this was the first time I sat down to actually watch the damn movie...

After all the scalding reviews online I was bracing myself for the worst. Well imagine my surprise to discover that not only is the film not terrible, I actually quite enjoyed it! Of course I might be biased because I'll watch Anthony Mackie in literally anything...

I won't embellish, this isn't some misunderstood masterpiece. We're not talking about the second coming of The Winter Soldier here. It's just another standard-issue CBM, not great, not terrible. However, I had a lot of fun with this: it's certainly a lot more enjoyable than the Black Adam's/Flash's/Fury of the Gods'/Lost Kingdom's/Morbius'/Quantumania's that have cluttered the genre over the past couple years...

In fact, I liked BNW even more than last year's Deadpool & Wolverine. At least BNW didn't traffic in the same built-in obsolescence and forced scatological humour that Wade & Logan did...

One point I do agree with is that Giancarlo Esposito was totally wasted here. Marvel, when you've got an actor of this quality on the payroll, give him a meatier role. He deserved to be Professor X, not freakin' Sidewinder :whatever:

Anyway, a breezy good time. Still haven't checked out Superman or Fantastic Four yet but hoping to find the time soon...

I liked Superman and FF:First Steps.
Both movies were enjoyable for me and frankly that is all I care about as viewer. As long as I am entertained then I am happy. Don't care for the brand tribal stuff.

I was skeptical of some of the casting picks for FF but was pleasantly surprised. I think all the actors did well in their roles.

Careful, your criticisms of Superman mirror many MAGA criticisms of the film.

Right wing news totally ran with the narrative that ā€œSuperwoke immaculated the character.ā€

Speaking of Thunderbolts...

Why was Valentina kept alive? They built her up over several films and shows, and she was basically just a discount Amanda Waller at the end of the day. I know it must be cool for millennial creatives to work with a cast member of Seinfeld, but come on.
Valentina feels like Amanda Waller mixed with Justice League International Maxwell Lord.

Rewatched Ant-Man Quantumania for the first time since I saw it in theaters and it was not a good time and kind of irrelavant now since they're moving away from Kang :funny:
My biggest criticisms are

Hank and Hope are just there not doing much.

Janet's character and relationships with Kang/Bill Murray feel underdeveloped

Kang come across as meh. The character has two interesting motivations in the comics for me.

1.he is a egomaniac renaissance man that wants to prove his superiority beyond everyone and be worshipped for it. Kang's obsessive need to prove he is better than the Avengers is his achilles heel.

2. KANG's love/infatuation with forever reincarnating ravonna renslayer and attempts to be with her or win her favor.

The movie didn't do any of these portrayals properly. Kang's motivation to escape the quantum realm would of been more compelling if it was in the hopes of reuniting with his love Ravonna. Would of gave Kang some actual depth.

Gunn did obsessive despot well with Lex Luthor in Superman. Kang should of been closer to that portrayal than what we got.

So it looks like Jurassic will be the global July winner and Superman will be the domestic winner.

Glad all 3 did well though. Nice healthy month at the box office for a change! :wowe:
I'm glad all 4 did well. :o

So Black Panther 3 and X-Men are priorities, with casting for X-Men begining soon. I have a feeling X-Men will probably be one of the first movies after Secret Wars.

Also Deadpool and Blade are not a priority at the moment :oldrazz:
Marvel struggling to get Blade right is the baffling. The character really ain't that complex. People liked the first two films because they had cool characters, good soundtracks and directors with unique entertaining visual styles

Sorry. If it makes you feel any better, I at least misspelled ā€œimasculated.ā€

Alternatively, on the topic of toxic masculinity, here is a picture of Billy Gunn dwarfing Schwarzenegger:

I never realized Billy was that huge.

I never realized Billy was that huge.

IIRC, aside from his AEW stuff, Billy does professional bodybuilding.

Dude has always been a physical specimen but damn!

mfw F1 crossed $500 million at the global box-office

They go crazy for it in Europe so it makes sense.

But kidding aside, the movie that all the elderly flocked to this summer was easily M:I: The Final Reckoning. I was the youngest person in my screening by a good 20 years. They might as well have loaded up the collectible popcorn buckets with Werther's Originals. :o
