I'm Reading Your Stuff: General News and Discussion Thread

Lol, the hell did I type? Sleep is very important, kids. :funny:

Not making any predictions here, but I think there's totally a way to approach the story where the existence of the Court isn't so much a mystery. As in Batman learns of them early on in the movie, or maybe even always knew of them as an urban legend, and the story is more about slowly unraveling the mystery of what they're up to and how deep that rabbit hole goes. And that's a story that could span the whole trilogy honestly.
That would be fantastic. Throw in some of Batmans other rogues gallery as well to tie it all together. I love that.

Hahaha I had to think about it really hard to make sure I wasn't misunderstanding what you meant before I poked fun at you.

To echo Gothamsknight, I'd love that as well. I'd realllllllly like to see Clayface as a sort of henchman for them. The potential on screen is so so high. Could be quite thrilling and tense to see scenes play out where you're not sure if someone is Clayface in disguise or not. Just constantly have the audience on edge.

While I can help it for now, I'd REEEEEEEEALLY rather just save most of the Court business for Part II so the freaks can have Part III all to themselves.

Can’t believe Gunn is just squeezing his way into Reeves’ work, promoting **** when no asked him to. I really hope he stops interfering w Reeves, gets offline and focuses on the soon-to-be-dead-so-who-cares-anyway DCU.

:o

I mean it's his job lol. As head of DC Studios, it would be more weird if he wasn't showing up to promote the show.

This is what I would want. If he intends to use it, I feel like the court of owls is a good bridge to a third part which is a rise of the "freak" villains.

I started reading the court of owls. Besides the reanimated bodies, I am liking the story. Obviously it would have to be heavily adapted for film, but I think the basis is there for an intriguing story. Maybe using clayface and hush as enforcers for their bidding. Although, that talon costume is cool, would be ashame not to see on film.

Either way, this is exciting with Penguin starting up. Can't wait for tomorrow since we seem to be the only people on the internet who haven't seen this show. It's crazy to me how these influencers got access to it.

At the moment it’s looking like a twisted version of Hush meets The Long Halloween. This would include Hush going after Bruce and Two-Face releasing the inmates of Arkham. I’m sure there will be other surprising elements with other villains being involved.

I’ll believe this Court of Owls business once I see something more solid. If the Court really is involved, they’re definitely going to be re-imagined in a big way.

With the rave reviews on her performance, I will not be surprised if she will have a part in the sequel.

In an interview Reeves kind of implied that the way Lauren wrote a character and who they cast for the role made him rethink plans and include that character in Part II, I'm willing to bet that character is Sofia.

Out of curiosity, what makes you think your long Halloween/hush mashup scenario is any more likely than the Court of Owls?

Got a lot of nerve showing up to that premiere when he’s personally taken every page that Reeves and Tomlin have written and thrown it into a room-sized fireplace, laughing— LAUGHING— while he did it!
The he turns to Matt Reeves pitching Batman Part 3:

I think Dark Victory would make more sense.

You're all wrong. Clearly it's an amalgam of Hush and Court of Owls. Instead of Hush himself antagonizing Batman, he's using the Court as a proxy to exact his revenge. :o

As for The Long Halloween, in the first film there are many elements that are inspired by the story. The Penguin continues to build on this by adding more of the major characters in The Long Halloween such as Sal “The Boss” Maroni and the Falcone Crime Family. Then, Matt Reeves referenced that a journalist was thinking in the way of what was being discussed involving Harvey Dent. Also, Harvey is responsible for the release of the Arkham inmates in multiple storylines including The Long Halloween One of the comics were hinted at in the coding of the Rataalada website.

With Hush, I believe that it would be loosely based based on that novel. The first film partially sets up his reimagined origin, so there’s room to explore the character similarly in that way that Matt took all of the major elements of The Riddler and found someone real that’s similar to him. There’s also some elements of Heart of Hush that could work. The character is pretty much a blank slate, but at least there’s references to his existence.

With the Court of Owls, it’s really all just speculation built off of a quote about “deeper corruption”. There’s no physical evidence in the first film that would suggest that the Court of Owls will be built upon moving forward. Matt said that all of the clues are in the first film, so that’s where I put my focus. I’m not saying that they won’t be involved, but there’s no direct reference to their existence. I’ve been watching The Batman over and over to see if I’m missing anything, but nothing so far. I’ve put plenty of thought into it, but as more info comes out, my opinion will evolve.

My thing is that they’ve already drawn heavily pretty heavily from The Long Halloween, and this version of Riddler already took some inspiration from Hush. I’m good with this being a more grounded take, but I don’t want the sequel too similar- I want to see the story expand in new and interesting ways. What’s exciting to think about for a sequel here is thinking about ways this movie can differentiate itself— not about how it can be as similar to The Batman as possible- IMO.

As far as the deeper corruption quote, it may or may not allude to The Court, but it begs the question of what that could be referring to when the first film was all about revealing that Falcone controls the entire city and amassed power via a Thomas Wayne fund intended to help the city. That’s a pretty big bombshell. It accounts for the scale of the corruption of the past few decades. But what about before that? Who wielded the power? Why was there a need for a Renewal fund in the first place? It makes sense that any new rogues introduced will be a part of an exploring these things, rather than just popping up for a one-off story. Whether it’s The Court or not, the full history of corruption in Gotham has not been told in the first film. I think we can be pretty confident about that.

Ok, there’s a few things I want to touch on. If you’re writing a book, graphic novel, tv series or something like that to tell a completed story, you’re going to use some of the same inspirations in order for it to all feel connected. This is one of the points that Matt was making so that the films don’t all feel entirely different. The Long Halloween is a major component.

I also literally don’t understand why people keep saying that Riddler took inspiration from Hush. If anyone knows the Riddler, they’d know that everything that he does is pulled from something that he’s done in comics while taking inspiration from The Zodiac and characters like John Doe and Michael Myers.

Sal Maroni was the most powerful man in Gotham. That’s why everyone had to get together to take him down. Renewal was created by Thomas because he wanted to improve Gotham. There were many other corrupt people in 44 Below that worked at the bank, city council, the senate etc. It’s literally the whole system. There’s plenty of room to explore how these corrupt people have affected the lives of others in Gotham. You also have plenty of room to explore the rise of other villains without making the story start to seem like villain of the week or making the next film feel disconnected from the first.

You know, it's actually kinda clever having Gordon put the Batsignal on the roof of an abandoned building instead of the GCPD. Plausible deniability with having anything to do with Batman.
