I'm Reading Your Stuff: General News and Discussion Thread

It is and always has been Hush. That's been obvious from the start, imo.

will it force WB/DC to combine the two universes? Let’s be real, Matt Reeves’s Batman stuff has been the only thing from DC that has been golden since 2021.

Idk why fans think this is the immediate route they'd wanna go to make things "better". If Superman fails why would bringing a successful outing to that failure make any more or less since then just trucking along with Lanterns, Supergirl, etc and lower budget fare like Clayface and Sgt. Rock?

There will be an insane panic with many dumb decisions made if Superman isn’t a turbo hit (frankly, my contempt for WB at this point is so total I just want to see the studio sink even if it takes movies I care about down with it - burn, Zaslav, burn) but I don’t think folding this in will be among them. Especially if that’s the kind of move that would make Reeves walk this functionally killing the franchise lol.

But if Riddler is Edward Elliot's son, then he's HUSH? Or am I supposed to take away from that comment that there's still a Tommy Elliot out there somewhere (and was probably the same person who flagged the Renewal Fund conspiracy to forensic accountant Edward Nashton).

At least HUSH is a new villain for the big screen, so that's interesting to me. And he's pretty much a blank slate that Reeves can do whatever with. Though I'm still on the Prey train lol.

I always liked the theory that when "HUSH!" flashed across the screen in The Batman, it was just a nod to fans that Reeves was amalgamating Riddler & Hush into one character.

So is the reveal now going to be "oh you thought it was Riddler that discovered the corruption in Gotham, but actually it was me all along! Your jealous childhood friend!" I suppose the only reason to do that would be for Tommy Elliot to be angling to replace Falcone as Gotham's kingpin, but that seems more Court of Owls territory--so maybe there is some truth to the Court being featured too (or, perhaps, it's not Riddler/Hush being amalgamated but, rather, Tommy Elliot/Hush & Lincoln March/Talon).

So Hush is the villain. Got it.
Nope, the way I read all this is they mined Hush for elements their version of the Riddler, just like Nolan did by merging his version of Ra's al Ghul with a lesser known antagonist from the comics, Henri Ducard.

This was my reading too; hopefully that’s the case, and not just my/our wishful thinking

World of Reel is also a totally illegitimate source. I’m sure it’s true! Zaslav is a POS who should be catapulted to mars. But that’s not a real source.

Even this site is infested with horrible topics of money lost and gained. The last week or two has been so fatalistic regarding film and it's so gross. Nobody seems to give a damn about the films.

CEO wants films to make money and wants projects to be made more smoothly
... Oooooh wow, how informative and new and necessary for us to know.

It shocks me how many people somehow find joy in looking at movies and trying to think like armchair execs. I’m guilty of hyper fixating on industry gossip too but I feel like there’s a whole class of people who like Jeff Sneider podcasts more than film as an art form.

From what I remember, Hush was originally going to be the villain in The Batman. Then Matt decided to go with Riddler instead, because the story he wanted to tell fit his character best.

It would be a strange and unnecessary move to make Riddler the son of Edward Elliot. I also still see no similarities between Riddler and Hush. Riddler’s mother died in Arkham when he was an orphaned toddler. I’m assuming she gave birth to him in Arkham. His inspirations come from his own character history, the Zodiac Killer, Se7en and Michael Myers for sure.

Hush is way more flexible. His origin is already reimagined and Matt can use entirely different inspirations to really make him stand out even more. Matt should definitely lean heavily into his killer surgeon M.O.

Tommy and Bruce won’t be childhood friends due to Bruce being reclusive. Tommy was never an orphan either and I don’t expect him to be in this version. What may happen is that Bruce reaches out to Tommy after the revelation of Edward’s murder. From there it becomes more of a “keep your enemies close” sort of story line.

Tommy could absolutely still be Bruce’s childhood friend. That’s silly. I don’t think Reeves will necessarily keep literally any background details about Hush in his hypothetical version but it’s not like Bruce was raised at the bottom of a well lol

Reeves has also never said anything that indicates Hush was ever the villain in the first movie.

Sure, if Matt wants Bruce and Tommy to be childhood friends, he could do that, but it’s not vital to their characters. I just don’t really see how it would fit at the moment. Not only was Bruce a recluse, but Tommy’s family got rich off of the Wayne family secrets. I feel like the story would be stronger with them building a relationship than trying to go off of a pre-existing one, because it will start to feel a bit forced.

I’m pretty sure Matt did say in an interview that he originally considered Hush. Though this was before any writing took place. It’s not entirely important though. I do love the way Matt is setting things up so far.

Pretty cool looking Joker for a commercial, like a more realistic version of Nicholson without the perma-smile.

Meanwhile, for this series, we have this:

We have had so many rumours about villains now that it will be surprising no matter who they choose. The only character that I wouldnt be surprised about is Harvey Dent. I feel like that's a shoe in.

Hush would be a great choice because any changes you make to the character won't offend to many die hard fans. I mean, if Clayface was actually considered that would have been pretty cool to see as well.

More than anything I can't wait to see what the story is. Does he go with the whole deeper corruption related to Gotham elites which then leads to the rise of the freak villains or does he go a different route.

I love me some inside baseball.....when it's coming from people who know what they're talking about. Less so when people pretend to know what they're talking about it and use it as a reason to spew negativity on upcoming films for no apparent reason.

Film Twitter this week has been particularly depressing in how everyone is just parrotting how Mickey 17 is an expensive flop for Warner Bros.

Like , what the ****?

THAT'S what people wanna fixate on regarding a movie that's just been released??! Why has everyone become an exec? When did people start caring about how much a ****ing corporation has done on the opening weekend (outside of the industry)?

I need to take a break from even just looking at social media, I think.

2025 has been the year of me abandoning things that don't serve my happiness. Sports team sucking? Cool, I'm not going to watch the games.

Film twitter being annoying? Cool, I'm unfollowing. I don't have the emotional space with all of the current s**t in the world to have things that should be bringing me joy weighing me down.

It's why I've been quite light in my discussing of how long it's taking Matt to make the movie.

It's more or less an open secret that the reason why is not exactly a very nice one and is very likely to be a situation where the development of a movie is not even close to the main priority
