I'm Reading Your Stuff: General News and Discussion Thread

I'm pretty cynical about all this but you'd think they would have killed this movie several times over instead of waiting until the first time the cast seems to have an idea of when it's filming and what it's about.
I mean, I’m open to the idea that there’s a day where the rug gets pulled out from under me, but right now I’m feeling more of a mild irritation (if that) than genuine anxiety about whether or not this happens.

Like, folks… let’s keep in mind that a good five years passed between Reeves getting hired and the movie actually coming out. AND that there was a short period where it looked like he was out.

Let’s not start looking for hidden meanings in every single thing we read just to justify our desire to spiral.

Ultimately, my honest read on the situation is that things seem extra chaotic and messy with Batman because they expected The Batman II to come out around the same time as Superman. That way, all that would be left for the Reeves franchise would be to wrap up by the time the DCU was really getting off the ground. It just hit a point where there will probably inevitably be more crossover than predicted but we just quite simply don't know how they're going to navigate that. But we have no indications that, with regards to this movie, there's some grand conspiracy to wipe it off the map to make room for DCU Batman.

My only big ?!?!?! moment is still Safran saying A Batman movie will come out in October, 2027. No one has really found a convincing way to make that not sound a little weird and ominous, imo.

Agreed, but then again, when the DCU was announced, superhero films were still doing well, the flash and black Adam hadn't bombed at the theater and Marvel had no cracks in the armor.

Three years later, things change and I don't think 2 batmen simultaneously will fly anymore.

To me, it's just too much smoke around this situation and when the trades make comments about still not knowing when it's filming, that worries me. He has been finishing the script since September. There should be no reason why they don't have dates locked in for filming within the next 2 months.

All that makes me think is that it's more likely for the DCU to severely underperform than for them to kill an already successful franchise starring their only consistently successful character.

Pretty sure they're all aware of the possible scheduling situation between Sgt. Rock and Part II considering they're making both lol would this even make it to a trade if that were the case? Would the offer even happen if they hadn't sat and talked about the thing they're all actively involved in? Lol Idk. We can get dramatic over stuff, but this feels sillier than usual.

Farrell is in Part I for all of 10min. I don't see him going over 20min in this one and it's not like it'll be a short film. He can be lead and support in two films in a 6-9+ month window.

One of the literal only things we know about Part II is that Colin said he’s only in it for like five scenes.

Assuming that iteration of the script is still what's moving forward. I remember that quote, but I also remember Reeves saying The Penguin shifted things around for them. And the awards run that series just had could also impact the size of Penguin's role in sequels moving forward.

Could be as simple as THR not having confirmation from DC Studios on a start date. Nothing officially announced = “hopefully”.
My issue is this statement comes from DC studios that it "hopes" to start shooting at the end of the year. How do they not know at this point, they are the studio.

It's March, a 6 month preproduction brings you to September. Time is running out to lock down these things if a script isn't finalized.

The only thing we know that's changed recently is that Reeves is actually sharing the story with the actors.

Unfortunately, I think we get some clarity closer to the release of superman. My thoughts are by that point they will have a good idea on tracking for opening weekend and if that movie does well I think Reeves loses a lot of leverage.

that's another confusing and funny aspect of all this. So Colin knew how much he's involved in the sequel in september 2024. we're in march lol, and we've been constantly getting told the script isn't finished and that nobody read it. the status of this script is madly confusing to me, even tho i'm usually the reasonable one on these type of production topics.

Agreed. He's a different flavour of Batman - not menacing/scary. More unnerving, gloomy, vulnerable, etc.

Still valid. Maybe not my ideal, but.

I was 110% an 'Bat-Fleck Hater' when he was announced - but the film's quality aside, Ben did great and looked amazing. That said, he's not the best Batman. And if I have to hear one more time "bUT dA WaREhOuSE sCeNe!!!!"....Yes, it was cool. But one killer scene does not a good movie or good characterization of Batman make.
Absolutely agree.

Could be that the "surprise" villain is now " penguin" since the show did so well and he became more of a focus point than Riddler. And due to this surprise success, Matt and crew revamped the script to push Penguin into the whole main villain vibe with a side villain Hush or court of owl's perspective. Matt said people would be surprised, and in saying that if it were announced that Penguin is the main baddy, the surprise would be it wasn't someone new or different.

Making Penguin the big bad in the name of fan service sounds disastrous and unlikely. Not that it couldn’t have been done but that sort of reworking for those reasons is always a terrible idea.

I’m hoping nothing from Penguin comes up really for that reason beyond the stuff that’s obviously sequel hooks. I know people really want Sofia in it but that, again, just sounds like fan service to me.

I am hoping it is something different and exciting...REEVES stating " people will be surprised by the villain, " leaves me wondering against the obvious...

If I’m remembering this right, Batman will already be on a case at the opening of TB2. If so, I wonder it will be connected to the main villain or maybe it’s an opening with a minor league villain similar to Batman fighting the gang in the subway.

Batman fighting the Terrible Trio would be a cool cameo opening, though I know Matt wants Batman to be the focus and not overstuff the films with villains.

there is no way we aren't getting an update at Cinemacon right?

I expect Matt will be there and at least say the script is done, also wouldn't rule out the title reveal.

As much as I would like this to happen, CinemaCon is for upcoming movies in the following year isn't it, why would they give us an update for a film coming out in 2027.

At this point, I'm starting to think we don't hear anything until after the release of superman in July.

If we don't hear anything by end of may, I don't think production starts this year, period.

cinemacon is for the upcoming slate. the sequel literally got announced at cinemacon 2022
