I'm Reading Your Stuff: General News and Discussion Thread

I'm just hopeful that Reeves is going to do for the sequel what he did for the first movie. The fact that he managed to have Riddler, Penguin, Catwoman and Falcone, with a small joker tease at the end was incredible.

So I feel like the door is open to multiple introductions to other villains. I'm also wondering if there will be a character like the Penguin in the first movie that ends up being a fan favorite.

Phantasm as I've said before doesn't feel right for a Bruce who's significantly more isolated than BTAS Bruce ever was. I don't see Pattinson ever getting into an Andrea situation pre becoming Batman where she makes him doubt his mission. It genuinely feels like Selina was Bruce's first ever genuine romantic exposure in his life, or at the very least exposure he didn't close the door on as soon as possible. Court of Owls/Talon is probably where I'd throw my hat on if anything but it's still early days

Phantasm is a reinvention of an older Batman villain called The Reaper. Let's take a look:

Fictional character biographies

Dr. Benjamin Gruener

Dr. Benjamin Gruener is a German Jew who was placed in a concentration camp run by Colonel Kurt Schloss. He kills Schloss at a Halloween parade and seemingly dies battling Batman when he falls off the edge of a dam. In Tony S. Daniel's "Batman: Life After Death" story arc, Hugo Strange resurrects Gruener and manipulates him into becoming a mass murderer. However, Batman makes Gruener see that Strange is using him before leaving.

Judson Caspian
Judson Caspian is a socialite by day and a vigilante by night. After losing his wife to a robber in the streets, he becomes the Reaper, targeting public menaces and murdering them with a scythe. He has a run-in with Green Lantern Alan Scott before traveling to Europe and disappearing. Several decades later, Caspian reassumes the Reaper identity and battles Batman. Batman works with the mob and Joe Chill to battle the Reaper, who eventually kills Chill. Caspian is later killed in a battle with Batman after choosing to fall off a ledge.

Joe Chill Jr.
In the 1991 one-shot sequel Batman: Full Circle, Chill's son Joe Jr. briefly assumes the mantle of Reaper as part of a plan to drive Batman insane. He eventually unmasks Batman, but does not recognize him. Chill attempts to mentally break Batman, who escapes and spares him.

Caspian sounds the most interesting to me, especially with Battinson seemingly struggling with being Batman from what we've heard. But I also feel like it'd basically be Battinson post Flare vs Vengeance pre Flare, which doesn't feel like the most interesting story you could tell for Battinson in Part II to me

Batman: Prey
Batman: The Telltale Series
Bruce Wayne - Murderer?
Dreams in Darkness (B:TAS)
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
A Serious House on Serious Earth
Shutter Island
The Strange Secret or Bruce Wayne (B:TAS)
Reeves is clearly taking a lot from Earth One too

I think it's gonna take some nods from both Prey and Imposter and feature a Hush/Clayface alagam, with Hugo Strange as the overarching threat.

But, I insist again, I'd really love Deacon Blackfire!

Keoghan was also super tight-lipped whenever questions about his involvement in Part II came up. I don't know, but he gave me a clear impression that he's got something to do in this one.

I have a very strong feeling that Arkham Asylum is going to factor into this movie quite heavily, which is why Strange is making more sense to me. Not to mention Matt's comments about Bruce struggling with being Batman. Therapy might do that. :hmm:

You know, originally, I was against Hugo. I guess because I don’t feel he has much to offer as a main villain. Though, over the past few months or so I thought about what it would be like if he turned out to be the child psychologist for Bruce and Harvey. That would really shake things up in this series.

The aura-farming with this script is insane.
"I like it." James Gunn says with a completely, utterly unenthused tone and expression. Everything else has been glowing, albeit you'd expect so and hope so from the people who are gonna make it :funny:

I'd argue another point Hugo has is if they wanted to do another Spin-off after, Hugo Strange has potential to be explored, a show about a Psychiatrist in Gotham could be really good.

I really hope the next film deepens this family history, because I still found this whole part really clumsy in the first film. I understand that it was necessary to have the Riddler plant doubt in Bruce's mind about his parents (and to an extent about his crusade) but that whole video felt like such an explanation dump that I hope the sequel will retroactively smooth that part out a bit...

I could easily see this happening. Just from a visual standpoint the only reason I don't think it would be Hugo Strange by himself is because he doesn't really have a strong iconography.

Hush and Talon do and from a marketing perspective give a bit more to intrigue people.
This is still a Batman film so you need whatever rogue they choose to peak the interest of the general audience.

I think with Hush, the reality is, no one would be too upset if the character was reinterpreted for film. He has a very strong look and is basically a blank canvass to adapt.
That's funny, because I think exactly the opposite!

In my opinion, a character like Talon could easily be perceived as just another masked fighter among many in the genre, whereas Strange's unusual appearance seems more unique and original to me in a film of this kind.
But I admit that this will probably not be the case for the general audience and like said, the character must be associated with another, more spectacular one...

If the movie keeps the basic premise of "Hush manipulating the Rogues into working for him", color me interested.

I feel like Matt has talked way too much about the Rogues Gallery for them to not play a role here too.
I feel like that'll be much more of a Joker thing.

Not only that, you'd also risk the possibility of repetition considering Selina already had a very similar arc in the first movie.
