I'm Reading Your Stuff: General News and Discussion Thread

I remember TDK if that’s what you’re referring to. And I liked it in The Long Halloween. I liked it in Season 1 of Caped Crudader (even if the design left me wanting). You could do Harvey/Two Face across Pt II and III if there are stories Reeves is looking to prioritize, sure, but it’s not necessary.

If we get another 3 hour movie, I’d be perfectly fine with 2 hours of Harvey and 1 hour of Two Face. Especially if Reeves explores more of the Dent character than we ever saw in TDK.

But did you like it in Beware the Batman season 1?

Lol I tried Beware the Batman but don’t think I got that far.

I don’t think Dent will be Hush, but I think we’ll see him wrapped in bandages at some point. And the killer/mystery villain will have the Hush aesthetic.

Dent could also be this universe’s Lincoln March—maybe he’s Bruce’s half brother. Left with half of face lol. Christopher became a drunk because he’s stuck with the son but not the woman he loved.

The fact that VA is pretty vehement about Dent being in it, as well as Gunn not coming out to debunk it makes me believe it is, in fact, true.
Unless Reeves asked Gunn not to comment publicly on rumours about the film anymore, following the Robin rumor. Which isn't impossible, but I'm not sure Gunn could help himself.

Or if it's intentional studio misdirection, similar to the Stanley Merkel stuff. Gunn debunks stuff, sure, but he has also debunked true leaks so like, idk I don't really put a ton of weight into what he says anymore.

It's pretty weird that all of these leaks with Pitt and Johansson and the casting seemed to have the same source, and then suddenly after that all went viral, a separate source apparently dropped who they were being cast as. Like it's weird that the people in the know about who was being cast, aren't also all in the know about who they were being cast as. Sneider didn't hint that he knew about this til the day before he dropped it, which he would have hinted at earlier, or dropped with his big ScarJo report. It just all feels sus.

I remember that Jeff Sneider and John Rocha revealed on their podcast over two years ago that Josh Hartnett and Joel Edgerton being considered for the role of Harvey Dent

I can see Joel Edgerton as Harvey Dent. He's very likable, extremely talented and charismatic.

Im team Josh! :D

I've read several articles and Wikipedia pages about Christopher Dent. His story and his relationship with Harvey sound captivating and very sad. Matt Reeves could make a great drama out of it.

His "War for the Planet of the Apes" movie went in a similar direction in terms of vibe. So I can see why he chose this story.

Oh hey, it’s exiled Hype superstar Invader Joker. Very creative. Will never happen, or anything close to it, but it’s clever. Christopher Dent being a Roy Cohn type is cool.

Hmm. May I ask why not? That kinda felt like it had something. Would be a clever way to avoid centering another "Batman part 2" on Harvey's rise and inevitable fall. If hypothetically his disappearance was the jumping off mystery for the film, it would be a way to instantly let the audience know this isn't TDK 2.0. It'd be a clever inversion of Harvey's well-known arc if we started the story knowing something bad has happened to him, and now it becomes about Bruce having to untangle both the how and why of it all. And still leaves room for him to be hidden away in Arkham (or elsewhere if that's too obvious) as Two-Face for a later reveal.

I can also see an argument for Reeves not wanting to show Harvey's fall from grace again for the same reason he didn't want to show the Waynes' murders again. Obviously the latter has been on screen many more times, but still. It shouldn't be discounted that what many see as the most definitive Batman film of all time was centered on Harvey Dent's transformation into Two-Face. This actually feels like it could be a fresh way to revisit it and bring a familar story into that noir detective space.

Spitballing here, but I think a MOTP-influenced noir where Gilda plays an important/villainous role, Bruce/Harvey/Gilda all have history, and the investigation into Dent's disappearance starts unraveling deeper levels of corruption in Gotham could be pretty awesome and actually sounds plausible IMO.

With Dent and Gilda, it logical to think of The Long Halloween, but it's not an absolute: it's entirely possible to write something that only borrows the characters.

To comment on the hypothesis of Bruce Wayne's old friend or girlfriend reappearing from the past, I don't believe it. In my opinion, the first film showed us a version of the character who was too emotionally constipated for this kind of relationship to be believable.
I think his personal connection to this new story will come through his family heritage, which will continue the motif of the first film and The Penguin series, in which Bruce, Selina, Sofia, and even Oz had to deal with this at various degrees.

I'm betting on a connection between Martha Arkham-Wayne and Christopher Dent... or with the Gilda, who could be revealed to be an Arkham at some point.

If we’re looking at older white actors (i.e. Brad Pitt) for Christopher Dent, it’d be great to see Viggo Mortensen (67) in another big production.

Jason Clarke is good too; he could re-team with Reeves. Clarke is maybe on the younger side for the role (56) but I’m sure the makeup team could make it work if they wanted

Probably a bit of Knives Out recency bias but Josh O’Connor (35) could be an interesting Dent:

Toby Kebbel (43) is a reliable choice (and not A-list) if Gilda & Christopher are taking center stage:

Maybe Dent is up for election and his father turns up missing and then eventually dead, leading to a cover-up on his part, the twist is obviously that Gilda killed his father because Harvey recently opened up to her about the abuse he experienced. The mystery and Arkham connection is that Harvey spent some time there growing up it was discovered he had an alter that he’s been pushing down for years, that COULD have done the murder.

Obviously it’ll be deeper than this, And maybe none of this at all, but I trust Reeves to handle it all properly.

Dent family drama does not sound thrilling to me at all. maybe as a sideplot. Still tho, if the movie looks as good as the first one, and i get Battinson and Jimbo on another 3 hour journey, i'm fine. Only way it'd work for me as the core story of the movie, is if old Dent/or Gilda are Court adjacent

Man, totally valid and that's your taste - not meant in any hostile way - but the idea of a Dent family psychodrama tragedy is so much more interesting to me than the Court. It's not even in the same ballpark.

I kinda like the idea that Christopher Dent is/was the Grandmaster of the Court of Owls. And Harvey Dent is being groomed to inherit Gotham; even if he himself doesn’t fully comprehend his father’s power.

The Court doesn’t need to be as comic-booky as Snyder’s original run but a secret cabal amongst Gotham’s elite could certainly provide an interesting mystery—especially if it unearths more Wayne family secrets for Bruce to grapple with.

And it gives Gilda something to gun against now that Falcone & his family is off the table

Won't ever vibe with the COO here after the reveal in the first film, it's been argued to death so I won't get into it but I still feel like Reeves is building towards some kind of Arkham Event film and I'd prefer they keep adding rogues into Arkham, which is hopefully where Dent ends up going.

I could roll with Court but its suuuuuch a boring concept. It's only cool in that first story because of the unique vibe Scott Snyder's writing has with it and the visuals.

I have enough faith in Matt to make whatever he does go with super compelling, so whatever we're getting I'm cool with, but I will just say the Dent family stuff intrigues me A LOT more than the Court of Owls ever could. That would feel like something really fresh to me.

Theory Part1
Theory Part2
Theory Part3

What do you guys think about this theory? Probably the most reasonable one I've read if the Gilda rumor is true.

I like the idea of Two-Face being the mystery villain, because Harvey "went missing" when he was scarred and his Big Bad Harv personality came to the forefront. Maybe this movie is more like Dark Victory instead of Long Halloween where Two-Face is partnering up with other villains to take power.
