Mae is the curvy cute girl who gets to play the nerdy 'ugly' girl in movies, sadly. It sucks. It really does.

The studio doesn't want curvy cute, but someone beautiful like Maika who could hook up with Thor's brother.

The thing is she isn't even really that curvy from what I've seen recently. But I honestly think that's a cultural thing. Because I know what blacks consider curvy is a lot different from other races.

Like the other day I heard someone call Demi Lovato curvy. Which is not what I would use to describe her at all

I mean. NO doubt, women get the real short end of the stick in Hollywood to say the least. And I've argued for women, ethnic/racial minorities, etc getting better exposure in Hollywood.
But I don't really hold this one decision against them as much

I can't really rationalize it. IDk I just look at all 3 of the young leads (Liam Hemsworth, Jesse T Usher, Maika Monroe) and theyre all these model hot, good looking people and i dont know I just except it as a fact that they cast all 3 movies by bangability.


That being said, a young no conventionally attractive male has a much better chance at being pushed as an actor that a not conventionally attractive female which is messed up.

Her not being the standard hot girl shoudn't have cost her, her role. Just as the characters looks shouldn't play a role in getting the "hot guy". Inviting EVERYONE back from the original minus her is just plain wrong in every sense of the word. Especially when she is still very active in Hollywood and is a very good actress.

I'm only speaking on the Mae Whitman thing because people still seem to bring up Will Smith not being in this. At least Smith had a choice, he decided against it. Whitman they gave no chance for no discernible reason. And honestly, in terms of looks, Maika is only slightly thinner than Mae.

There was really no reason to no try to get Whitman back, and from reports, it seems they didn't even give her a thought, which is quite ridiculous.

Love the world building. Still devestated about Smith's character... As someone else said, if this one's good and successful, they may have a way to sci-fi him back in...

Well that's one of the lamest ways that you could write out Smith's character possible. I really hope that that isn't just a case of pettiness on Emmerich's part. "Oh, he didn't want to play ball. So we'll not only kill him off, but do it in an incredibly lame/underwhelming way, that'll show him."

Sucks that Will Smith isn't in this, as he was certainly a big part of what made the original so endearing.

As for the movie itself, I might see it seeing as I have a bit of a soft spot for the original. This could definitely be a big hit due to the nostalgia factor that's for sure.

I'm sure it will make a ton of money but Will Smith was the best thing about the first one, I don't have much interest without his presence.

Exactly, that's what most people here are saying/thinking, including me to be honest. And it sucks, and is a sad commentary on Hollywood "standards." Personally, I also rather doubt that Liam would have had a problem with Mae being his love interest, he doesn't seem like that kind of guy from what I've seen.

I like how Judd Hirsch looks barely older than the guy playing his 60-ish year old son.

He seriously hasn't aged in 20 years.

To be fair, it happens to male actors as well.

Edward Furlong was of age to play John Connor in Terminator 3 yet they went for the more "attractive" lead at the time. Furlong had drug issues sure, but I doubt that was the reason he wasn't re-cast in the role. He was still a pretty active actor at the time coming off of American History X and Detroit Rock City.

What are some cases of child actors getting the chance to reprise their roles as adults years later? Andy in Toy Story 3?

They got EVERYONE else back though, even Data (who supposedly died in the first movie). And with Smith, they at least asked him to come back and he said no.

And yes, I'm pretty sure Furlong's drug issues were the primary reason why he wasn't asked back for T3. It's sort of like why Robert Downey Jr had trouble getting work after a certain point because of his "issues." They just aren't considered reliable and the studio doesn't want to risk it. Because it's not like Nick Stahl had conventionally "Hollywood leading man" looks either.
