Interstellar - Part 6

I still remember the collective sound of shock from the audience I was with when I saw Inception. I've never been in an audience where an ending produced that type of reaction before, just the massive chorus of 'What?' and 'No!' lol.
I think that ending was a mistake on Nolan's part. I get the allure of an ambiguous ending, but it just didn't fit and it wasn't necessary.

The most important part of the ending though is that Cobb doesn't look to see if it drops, he has fully accepted this reality. It just touches on a theme that Nolan likes to explore in a lot of his films, that we're all imprisoned in our own subjective realities and can never truly know if there's a greater objective reality.

I think the most remarkable thing about Inception is how one little simple shot...changes everything. :woot:

Yeah I know Nolan has said that too, and that's a good point about the "we're all imprisoned in our own subjective realities" (hadn't thought of that), but my issue with it is that it doesn't fit Cobb's character and his story. The entire movie is about Cobb trying to get back to his children. And he even blatantly turns down Head!Mal when she wants him to stay with her. So for Cobb the difference between dream and reality isn't subjective or a philosophical question -- it's very tangible and he knows what he wants. That's the goal of the movie. So it just feels very unsatisfying (to ME anyway) that the narrative drifts from that at the end. I think Nolan, while he does usually do endings fine, has a tendency to get off track with his narratives (but I can't go into that now bc I have to go to work). Anyhow, I think Interstellar's ending will probably be okay. :yay:

New still.

“She’s serious I watched my 1st scene the other day & was like, my character is *****y!"
Hm, censored... Ok. Vixen or badass.

I still have the bootleg December TDK trailer from 2007 in my hard drive.

Best trailer ever.

Nah, BBegins (Teaser) is the best evah...

"They told me there was nothing out there, nothing to fear. But the night my parents were murdered I caught a glimpse of something. I've looked for it ever since. I went around the world, searched in all the shadows. And there is something out there in the darkness, something terrifying, something that will not stop until it gets revenge. Me."

Not only because of that quote, but because it didn't outright tell you it was a Batman film besides two still images.

Man...so many memories watching that bootleg trailer over and over. Until they released the HQ version that Sunday, then watching that one over and over...

That could be my favorite teaser ever.

The first time we heard Ledger's Joker voice was one of those "oh wow, it's different but it's wonderful" moments.

Oh man on the TDKR boards there was one guy who saw the movie like a week early who loved the first two and didnt like Rises and I've never seen a board do such a 180.

Haha yup, I think that was jmc (no offense dude, it's all good). In retrospect that was child's play compared to the MoS RT score fiasco.

What about the dude who got chased out of SHH by Spider-man fans after saying ASM let him down?

Ive always heard about that person. I cant believe people were expecting a masterpiece. No offence to Spidey fans but the trailers had good not great written all over it.

It actually fit perfectly.

Not only that, they were expecting ASM 2 to be as good as TDK. Spidey fanboys are insane. They easily match the batboards in terms of sheer lunacy.

I get why people were shocked back then with the Inception ending. It shouldn't be a shocker anymore, because it's actually not an ambiguous ending. It seems like it could be, the first couple of times you see it, but there are clues planted to tell us that it's reality for Cobb. It's all about the wedding ring folks. Plus it was about to stop spinning, and fall over. Nolan cuts to black right before it does because Cobb just doesn't care if it's a dream or not, he's just happy to finally be with his children. That was the point. AND Nolan is a crafty mofo and lures you into seeing the damn thing a second and third time :hehe:

Because the film tries to have its cake and eat it too. Story-telling wise it gains nothing from Bruce living. They symbol thing works even better if he had, as Batman lives on even as Bruce Wayne dies.
It gains everything. The film is not just about Batman carrying on as a symbol. That's a massive part of the whole trilogy and Rises. But the most important point of Rises is Bruce's arc as a character. For him to die at the end, and not move on from his pain, would be a slap to the face of everything they set up. The whole thing was geared towards Bruce making it out alive and leaving Gotham behind. As long as Batman inspired people in Gotham, turned out the hero, and carried on as a symbol for the next generation. Killing him off would only serve the crowd who wants to be shocked because a superhero died at the end of a story or the purists who don't want to accept a Batman who leaves Gotham behind for an attempt at happiness. It wouldn't serve the story they set up if they killed him off...there would be no payoff to seeing Bruce struggle in depression, looking to get killed, backs broken, imprisoned, stabbed and then blown away by a nuclear bomb. Why not? Because making the jump out of that prison was all about him finding the will to live again. Not to mention Alfred's speeches throughout the film. It's all a set-up to see the protagonist pull through the darkest time in his life. Not just to see him save his city.

I just saw Batlobster's response..dead on..

The whole point of TDKR is that Bruce finally regains the fear of death and the will to live. Him choosing to live at the end made that idea resonate so much more than it would've if he had just died like everyone expected him to. Bruce was willing to die a hero's death, even craving one, in the first half of the movie. If that's what he chooses at the end you essentially erase the whole character arc the movie had built for him. The funny thing is I'll bet anything that if he died, some of the same people saying he should've died would've been saying "You just don't kill Batman!" and holding that against the movie.

Oh man on the TDKR boards there was one guy who saw the movie like a week early who loved the first two and didnt like Rises and I've never seen a board do such a 180.

That was most likely me. If you ever want to tick off a passionate fan base tell them the film they are looking forward to the most for 4 years isn't very good. Fans will turn on their own.

Chastain sounded hyped. But she is still biased, having worked for the film and and all. I am more excited by reactions from Wright and PTA.
I knew Wright would love it. He adores Nolan's work and never shied away from gushing about Inception and (yes) The Dark Knight Rises on Twitter.
