I understand those screenings are supposed to be pretty loud .

No, digital. I understand movies are supposed to be loud, but the score got really intrusive in the final five minutes. (They could've mixed it down during final dubbing so it wouldn't drown out the dialogue.) I could barely make out the dialogue.

I would rather see Spielberg's Interstellar, it wouldn't be as long and ponderous as Nolan's movie is. And Williams' score wouldn't drown out the dialogue.

Finally got to see this. Some thoughts:

This film is a LOT to take in on one viewing. I think it's really weighed down by its own jargon, verbage, and exposition. Despite everything being explained for the audience, it's still not that easy to completely catch on to all of it and to fully grasp the "rules" of that world. You have to be a truly active participant in this film experience, in that if you tune out even for a minute, you might never be able to catch up.

Having said that, I really did enjoy this film and I thought it was an immensely rewarding film experience. I LIKE that Nolan doesn't make it easy for you. You have to pay attention and THINK and wonder, just like the characters do. There were moments that I was in complete awe of what was unfolding on the screen in front of me and I, for one, loved the ending. Knowing next-to-nothing going in to the movie really made it more enjoyable for me.

I'll need to see this again before I can give it an honest rating. Also, seeing this on the biggest IMAX screen in the country (AMC Lincoln Square in NYC) was truly awesome.

Once discussions of this film move past initial reactions, I'm interested in talking about some very specific things.

One aspect I thought was interesting about this film was the future earth it depicted and the way it went about its world-building, mostly through vague mentions.

One point the early part of the film drives home several times is that the world no longer has armies as resource strapped governments are too bankrupt.

Its such an odd point though. If history has shown us anything its that limited resources lead to more violence, not less. It seems to me that in this future, arable, blight free land would be more contested than oil.

Anyone else notice how many more PG13 movies use "f***". I dont have a problem with it at all, but it's just something I noticed. I feel like every PG13 movie I see nowadays (save for the Marvel movies) use it. It's interesting to me

Good film and it kept me entertained but it did not meet all the hyperbole that was attached to it 3/5

Did anyone else have problems hearing some of the dialogue?

Loved this movie. I do agree that the score in parts makes the dialogue hard to hear, but overall this film was an interesting take on the dystopian future/space exploration film. Great cast performances, top notch cinematography, and a 3rd act that I feel requires you to think about the film well after it is over. I was not a fan of TDKR, so I was hoping Interstellar was a return to form for Nolan. Thankfully I felt this was. Inception stands as my favorite Nolan film to date, but I appreciate Interstellar greatly.

I'm calling it terrible because I thought it was clunky writing and seemed to come out of nowhere, not because it was emotional. I was basically making the same face at her as [blackout]Cooper was[/blackout] in that moment. I love GOOD emotional speeches. That just wasn't one, imo. So we'll just have to respectfully disagree on that.

Mostly agreed. I still need to see it a second (and maybe a third) time, but that "revelation," as it were, came out of nowhere. And while Anne delivered it quite beautifully, this notion while on this mission from that character seemed like way too much.

I thought it did no favors for the character, even if they ended up being right.

How did that revelation come out of nowhere?

It was hinted that Anne's character was in love with that doctor a couple of times prior to her "speech". Cooper even asked TARS about their hypothetical relationship after the rest of the crew went to sleep one night, to which TARS responds that he also has a discretion setting -- that should have been telling enough. Cooper was always curious and suspicious of Brandt relationship with the doctor.

Yeah, I agree. Inception is pretty bad. The score gets so loud, to the point to where I have to turn down the sound a bit, and then when people start talking, I have to turn it up, and then back down, etc.

I don't know if he has a dedicated sound engineer, or if he personally does it, or a mix of the two, but he needs to learn how to balance his score.

The reactions -- so polarizing. I love it. Reminds me of the reaction to The Master two years ago. People thought they knew PTA as a filmmaker. They were hardly prepared for what he gave them.

I find that happens with most home movies/Netflix movies/etc. It's really annoying and I'd wish they'd balance it out

Yeah, I think most people I've seen around here have given it no lower than a 7, and then of course you have people who absolutely love it. I'm sure there's a few who'll hate it, but for the most part, it seems to be doing fine.

I love how Nolan made a hint of a love relationship between Cooper and Brand in the future. Now Cooper is flying through stars to Brand.
They both - the last people of his generation who remained the same as the young... but so lonely... who are seeking to each other.

It's very touching. It's great ending.

Surely if only some people are having dialogue issues it's a problem with theater set ups and not the film. If it was a film mix issue surely everyone would have this issue?
