Was there this much outrage when the Ancient One wasn't Asian?

I understand the Internet can be a crazy place but I'm really confused about this "controversy" it's awful they cast a white guy to play a white character but it would've been great to cast an Asian because martial arts. How is going with the racial stereotype any better. Why not just hope that we get strong Asian characters in the series rather than changing Danny's race just because.

No. Millennial bloggers singled out this character for some reason.

That's not true, I've read iron fist for years and although I don't hate Finn, I think marvel could have evolved but chose not to

Evolved? I really don't see how having as Asian person play someone who knows martial arts is evolving Danny's character is great because he doesn't belong in Kung Lun and is shunned because he's different and has to prove he's the best to get the Iron fist powers.

I haven't seen this guy act, so I can't say anything about his abilities there....but has anyone seen him do any action scenes in what he has appeared in so far? Does he look like he can do some decent martial arts moves?

As to him being Caucasian.....I've read IRON FIST since the 70's....he's always been Caucasian.

I'm sure he's being trained and I believe he's done some sort of sword figthting in Game of Thrones.

I am all for diversity but I am not going to get outraged over a white actor playing a historically white character. That is a waste of energy.

No, of course not. But he is in no way a hero who happens to be black. His race plays a major part in the way he was raised, the way he was treated by the law, what happened to him in prison, even the way he operates as a superhero. To say that Luke just happens to be black is disingenuous. If anything Luke is a better hero because he has experienced first hands the way that official channels can fail people and how unjust our justice system can be all because of his race.

Great point. I admit that I was not on the mark with my explanation. Race makes up a large part of Luke's struggle and the person he is coming through each struggle. Conversely then, Danny Rand's race will contribute to his own struggles as we will see when the show comes out in 2017.

I get that you were really set on an Asian being cast in the role of a white character, Silvermoth, but the word 'evolve' doesn't really have any real meaning in the context you use it. It just comes across as a backhanded comment. Marvel have done nothing wrong here and are not backwards in any way for casting a white character as white.

I find TV tropes very entertaining, however I feel like by classifying everything as a stereotypical trope, it's sort of trivializing the argument and not really making it a legitimate, valid discussion or debate. Because then you can break down just about everything as being some sort of accompanying racist trope.

Well said. There are numerous TV tropes or just tropes in general in American pop culture that don't necessarily deal with race which is the hot topic along with LGBT. What about the way seniors are portrayed in the media, young black women, etc.

His action scenes in Game of Thrones have mostly been like duels when his character is in armor and most likely being done by a stuntman.

Filmography doesn't seem to indicate he does martial arts type of fighting, but he might have that type of experience, not sure.

Another sad truth is the hypocrisy that some of these social justice crusaders put forth does not go unnoticed by the majority of people. Everything has it's limit. People have to know when & how to pick their battles, otherwise they run the risk of getting blown to bits by the grenades they seem so eager to toss. It's getting to the point where a lot of these people are becoming caricatures. Many things need to be brought to light, but you don't build people up by tearing others down. I don't care how good a point you have, if you insult others needlessly under the guise of righteousness then you're a shi! heel to me.

This board has been respectful in comments but some of the things I've read, really bitter.

Most of you here seem very intelligent and respectful. I'm sorry if anything I said here offended you. I'm not apologizing for my opinions, merely that if anything I said came off in a rude or disrespectful tone, I do apologize.

On topic, I am so stoked I am more excited for Iron Fist the anything coming out - except for Deadpool and Cable, Doctor Strange, Spider Man. Everything else is below Iron Fist lol

Just wanted to share some comments from another forum on Immortal Iron Fist that I liked:

Immortal Iron Fist is a Netflix show just waiting to happen. Aja's art is phenomenal and very well suited for Iron Fist's quick movement fights. Aja also manages to showcase Danny's techniques beautifully.

Agreed, to get the in depth characterisation and story in, they need to push the whole "he had the choice of immortality or revenge on the man who killed his parents and he picked revenge over eternal life."

He is also a trained living weapon and potentially lethal killing machine who generally holds back and tries to look for peaceful solutions.

A multimillionare who spends a lot of his time in city centers training kids in martial arts to help them.

I am so glad he is getting the netflix treatment over the cinema if they come close to daredevil and jessica jones for story quality I will be happy.

I can't agree enough. The Immortal Iron Fist comic run is the perfect blueprint for the Netflix series.

This board is fine, even if I disagree

Other places on the web have been really bitter. Many people are clearly ignorant regarding the character and are using this casting as an excuse to not just bash Finn, but "whiteness" or even "white people" in general. Not shocked by a lot of these opinions, I've seen it so often the last few years. Even some of the blogs/comments I've seen refer to Finn's complexion in a way they'd never dare to do for a minority, however innocent it may be or tries to be. Obvious bait. Fearless in the PC bubble.

I'll have to pick it up. Iron Fist is one whose series I've been intrigued on how they make, yet I've not read the comics.

The Ed Brubaker run is awesome

I love Immortal Iron Fist. Matt Fraction and Ed Brubaker. Can't go wrong there.

Like they are calling him "super white" or "they didn't just cast a white guy but the whitest guy possible." What the hell does that even mean? If he had an orange glaze like Hulk Hogan, he would've been more acceptable?

Orange glaze lol. Maybe freckles? Lol I always liked your sig there. Where is that from a movie? Nvm just looked it up. I definitely find straight edge appealing. I can see a Marvel superhero adhering to that lifestyle lol

Good thing there's spray tan. That should make him less offensive.

Moving off the race thing Madam Gao has to be back for this show right I mean they practically said she was going to Kun Lun

Yeah. They do seem to allude to it in her farewell in DD S1. Would be strange not to see her. Expect her to figure into the earlier Iron Fist episodes in my opinion.

I've never seen him in any fight scenes but I'm sure they will teach him some fight choreography and have a good double for some scenes.

Keanu Reeves proved a convincing martial artist in movies like the Matrix and John Wick. Most people probably would not of guessed the guy that played Ted in Bill and Ted could play a convincing fighter :cwink:

Interesting casting...

Game Of Thrones probably has the #1 or #2 ensemble cast in the history of TV... depending on where you rank The Wire, of course. Finn Jones wasn't bad at all, but he wasn't necessarily a stand-out performer. However... his character might have been the worst translation job from page to screen among, like, a quarter billion. :)

Loras Tyrell in ASOIAF is a glorious, pompous jackass who happens to be a superb warrior/knight. Loras Tyrell in GOT is a spoiled little ****. He could be OK in the role. He could kill it in the role. I'm pretty confident he won't be straight-up bad though.
