Iron Fist Iron Fist General Discussion Thread - Part 1

I find TV tropes very entertaining, however I feel like by classifying everything as a stereotypical trope, it's sort of trivializing the argument and not really making it a legitimate, valid discussion or debate. Because then you can break down just about everything as being some sort of accompanying racist trope.

I know the verbal slapdown will come from this...

But who says he even needs an American Accent? Let him use his natural voice. Doesn't really matter, long as we have the feel of the character.

Honestly, in a perfect world, he would have neither. But since K'un L'un doesn't exist on Earth, getting THAT accent down would be pretty damned hard.

I just don't take anyone serious when they let tvtropes feed their opinions.

Twitter is a goldmine right now. Suddenly everyone gives a **** about Iron Fist.

Just read about the casting, and yeah, he'll do. I'm not as familiar with his work as I was with Charlie Cox when he was announced - mainly I've just seen Jones on GoT - but he did fine there, so he gets the benefit of the doubt from me.

Reminds of when everyone suddenly became a Manadrin fan.

I was hoping they'd stay true to the comics and cast a white lead. I hate the idea of forcing something for diversity sake. There will no doubt be some great asian characters in the series. Not a fan at all of changing a characters race just to please a few people.

The sad thing is a lot of the shots that Finn is taking would be considered "racist" if he weren't a "white dude". Suddenly it seems like a crime for a person of whiteness to be cast as an historically white character.

Bad enough we have to honor them. Or praise them. Or heaven forbid defend them.

I'm all for diversity but there is an ugliness to some of this shi!

It's really messed up.

I'm seeing far too many comments online thinking this is whitewashing. Also assumptions that because of his martial art skills he must be asian because of it. Which is pretty prejudice unto itself. Too many just don't know what they are talking about, and trying to mask it with a wannabe progressive mindset. People just want to hate or get attention one way or the other. Far too many race baiting think pieces on this. Sad.

To call this whitewashing is wrong because whitewashing is when you cast white actors in non-white roles. And now people are getting upset that a white actor is cast as a WHITE character who has always been white in his entire history for over 40 years.

Scarlett Johansson as Motoko Kusanagi is arguably white washing.

Gods of Egypt is arguably white washing because you are casting white and British white actors to play actual Egyptians.

It's completely wrong. Too many people are just not familiar with the character and are only wanting to jump on the internet hate.

When the show starts people will shut up. Netflix's casting has been solid all around.

They are fair weather fans who I doubt have ever actually even read Iron Fist comics.

Another sad truth is the hypocrisy that some of these social justice crusaders put forth does not go unnoticed by the majority of people. Everything has it's limit. People have to know when & how to pick their battles, otherwise they run the risk of getting blown to bits by the grenades they seem so eager to toss. It's getting to the point where a lot of these people are becoming caricatures. Many things need to be brought to light, but you don't build people up by tearing others down. I don't care how good a point you have, if you insult others needlessly under the guise of righteousness then you're a shi! heel to me.

This board has been respectful in comments but some of the things I've read, really bitter.

As a long time Iron Fist fan I'm thrilled with the casting and the outrage is ridiculous it's all coming from people who've never read an Iron fist comic in there lives.

I truly wonder about this because they are all just voicing general complaints that I feel if they've actually read the comics they would know better and know they are not valid and not true.

That's not true, I've read iron fist for years and although I don't hate Finn, I think marvel could have evolved but chose not to

People that said Iron Fist needs to be Asian because of martial arts does not know the character of Iron Fist.

Yeah, I'm sure they haven't. Anytime a new character makes news the internet likes to act like they knew everything about them. Complaining left and right while never even have had picked up a comic.

Agreed.

Nothing arguable about the examples you gave. But yeah, anyone upset that a white guy was cast to play a white guy...

It's fine to evolve, BUT IT HAS TO FIT. This would have been a bird evolving gills and tank treads. Just not the same creature, to me.

Marvel evolved well enough when they changed the Mandarin into an idea or a mantle instead of a racist stereotype. And I'm sure Wong in Dr. Strange won't be his Asian manservant. But i don't see anything wrong with a character who's been historically white on the comics is played by a white guy.

Was there this much outrage when the Ancient One wasn't Asian?

I understand the Internet can be a crazy place but I'm really confused about this "controversy" it's awful they cast a white guy to play a white character but it would've been great to cast an Asian because martial arts. How is going with the racial stereotype any better. Why not just hope that we get strong Asian characters in the series rather than changing Danny's race just because.
