Iron Fist Iron Fist General Discussion Thread - Part 3

I'm not going to be PM'ing or revealing any spoilers anywhere. Episode specific content is still under embargo until March 17 after the show releases.

I can't really go into much greater details than what's already been revealed in the media and the footage and my general impressions. My general impressions are the show starts really slow but picks up toward the middle half of the season and shows potential to get better. However, Scott Buck definitely struggles with the material and really nailing down this character.

You've shown a great passion for the character throughout production, so I'll trust your opinion on it. After nailing previous characters I love, Daredevil and Punisher, and making me appreciate others that I didn't particularly care about, Jones and Cage, its a shame that it seems this show was somewhat doomed to fail, by getting someone on board who simply doesn't understand the character at its core.

I'm surprised Marvel let that happen. Even when they switch up characters they still keep the core of the characters.

Yeah Luke Cage did change everything about his background. He came from well-to-do family. His father was in his life and seemed to make sure his son was on straight and narrow. Served in the military and was a police officer. Obviously well read and educated. So they did change a lot about his upbringing.

Even Diamondback didn't seem to have all that bad of a life other than the fact that he was an illegitimate preacher's son. Their crime was really just a petty one. They stole a car and went out for a joyride. They weren't gang banging or killing anyone.

No you keep doing you...

This is an Iron Fist thread what good does putting down Luke Cage accomplish? Because Iron Fist reviews are bad it's now the "woke" crowds fault?

OK sure "Black Man"
What the hell? :funny:

It is strange isn't it. That's the one thing that Marvel have nailed everytime with their heroes. Its just very uncharacteristic for them.

I didn't mind it much because I never liked that about Cages character. I never liked that he was an excellent gang member

However as I said they could've gave ole boy some personality in the show. He was just so boring. He wasn't funny, he wasn't charismatic enough to be a good straight man. He wasn't bad... Just meh

Out of curiosity what is it you thought he was lacking in regards to his personality?

Idk just something. I can't think of a word to describe the MCU Cages personality except determined and a sweet guy. He needs something funny, brooding, snarky, aloof, etc.

You know all the complaints about Superman (he's too strong, corny, boring, too invicible) I feel that way about MCU Cage

He just seemed boring due to him being very low-key. For whatever reason, he seemed more interesting/showed the potential of being interesting in Jessica Jones.

If I have another general problem it's that some people are going to blame the show's quality on the fact he's not Asian, but it's really got nothing to do with it.

My problem is that Scott Buck and the staff couldn't get the Iron Fist concept to gel with the whole grounded, gritty realism thing. They wouldn't even let him wear a costume despite the fact that you know, Danny Rand is a public billionaire corporate heir and figure, and he would probably want to keep his street vigilante ties private.

I think Cage and Rand are going to have some trouble interacting and creating chemistry. If Rand is dull and Cage is dull, they're both by default going to be the straight man. And neither of them seem lighthearted enough to provide more levity.

Did they even see how they work as a duo before casting? I get the feeling they cast the characters in isolation of one another.

I get they probably didn't want to give Cage a stereotypical negative inner city upbringing but I do feel like they weakened his character arc from the comic.

The rebellious youth from the wrong side of the tracks into a hero that wants to help and improve his community is more compelling a backstory than what we got.

The evolution of Carl Lucas into Luke Cage felt more earned because he struggled more.

So in essence this show is garbage.

I can foresee a slew of articles along the lines of 'Iron Fist would have been saved with an Asian lead' and then ignoring that having an Asian lead wouldn't change other integral problems like writing and pacing.

Colter injected some of his own southern gentlemen personality into the role. If you see Colter talk in an interview you can tell he is a small town southern gent type of guy. I think some humorous one liners would of been nice.

I had a feeling this was going to be boring af from the trailers. Sigh

It will be interesting to see what type of dynamic they create for him and Danny. Doesn't seem it'll be much of "buddy cop" type of thing.

Yeah exactly.

Yes. Also, in the show, Luke Cage grew up in Atlanta, Georgia instead of like a north inner city.

If they don't forge that great friendship and relationship dynamic, I will be more sad.

He was far more along the lines of Bendis' Luke Cage than 70s Luke Cage.

Compare that to characters like Whiplash and Valkyrie who are effectively In Name Only or how major players like Quicksilver, Ben Urich and Rafe Scarfe were all killed off early on. Marvel change things from the comics and either change characters up entirely or they get rid of characters who still have arcs to explore.

I'm still quite excited to watch it, despite what I've been hearing. Mostly because the critiques I've heard from people on the previous Marvel shows were never things that bothered me.

I will say this though, Iron Fist seemed to have an uphill battle from the jump. Before anyone was even cast, the heat and anger and criticism was already being thrown at it. I mean, it felt like there were alot of things working against it before it even came together. So, I'm eager to watch it for myself and see what's what.

If not for anything, we'll finally get The Defenders.

I've heard, more than once, that getting an Iron Fist show would be worth even if only to get to see the great Luke and Danny bromance.

I've heard the potential for that bromance is amazing.
