Hopefully now, this is where SA can now see the divergence amongst "younger" fans. Because despite being of the same age, I happen to disagree with a lot of what you said here.
.
The difference between you and me is that despite being the same age-you are an old fan of Supes-you grew up with him whilst I only started getting into him 3 years ago.You are just as much an old fan as starving artist age withstanding.which is cool but it does mean we will have different views.
I happen to think Earth One is, put kindly, below average. It doesn't explore one iota why Clark wants and thinks he should be Superman. He just sort of does it because his dad said "it'd be cool". He just sort of falls into it after Tyrell's invasion.
I agree about Earth ones faults to the fullest. The characterisation of Clark was aweful and the fact that Clark was forced to become Superman because of an Alien Invasion was disgarceful. But Earth one did have a lot of good in it-Its still a better origin story than Secret Origin.
I abhor Straczynski's "Jim" Olsen. There is modernisation and there is bastardisation. I consider "Jim" the latter. Grant Morrison and the New 52's is much better as a character, he's Clark's (not Superman's) best friend and shares all of Clark's nerdy quirky interests. Plus he still retains the desire to get the best out of his work.
Heres the thing about Jimmy Olsen.Hes either written in a way thats just annoying or tolerable in Morrisons case but never written in a way that he is awesome or Interesting.Which is why welcome Staracysinsky Jim olsen even though he is not faithful to the character. Staracyscykis olsen is hands down the most awesome and interesting Jim olsen I have ever read and will be quite Glad for him to be shown as Supermans best friend.
As for losing the "silliness" I only partially agree. Very partially. Bizarro could do with an updating,
Partially agree that Superman stories should be less silly?Come one!If you want Superman to appeal to the modern audience all sily elemenst shld be rehauled or cast out.
Bizarro needs a serious update no doubt. The Concept of an evil Superman should be a badass villain concept yet Bizarro is potrayed in a silly, campy manner with all the backwards talk and stupidity...words cannot express to you just how turned of I am currently by Bizarro. And he is just one of the silly superman concepts I am talkin about.
The bottle cities should stay. Definitely. As a principle it is more "grounded" than anything else that appears in the Superman mythos. 'Bout to drop some science. Everything you see is mostly empty space, even matter itself, the nucleus makes up over 99.9% of the mass of an atom, but less than 1% of the space. The rest of the atom is empty. It is possible to suggest that Brainiac tech can condense the atom so that a small portion of space is removed from every atom. To put it in perspective, if every single human alive had all the space removed from them, we could all live on a sugar cube. But everything would still weigh the same, explaining the Kandorians weaknesses within the bottle.
When I say bottled cities are silly I mean they appear to be ridiculous-not that they are illogical. For example a man with the ability to fly is equally as fantastical as a man who can fart bombs. Both are equally fantastical, but farting bombs is just sillier.See what I mean
I see no reason why the cities-shrunk-and-imprisoned -in-a-bottle cant be changed to something cities-imprisoned-in-an-alternate dimension.
If in future stories want to go "grounded" and "out there" at the same time, Grant Morrison is the writer to emulate, with his runs on JLA, All-Star and Action. Not Stracyzinski.
Morrison does "out there" very well. But Grounded?Morrison? No.All star is THE most ungrounded Superman story I have ever read.Action attempts to be grounded but really isnt. JLA doesnt give a hoot about grounded just goes with the gods among us angle to fullest.I like Morrison but i know his limitation.
Stracyscinsky does grounded well but i havent seen any that suggest he can be out there. The only writers Ive seen that can go out there and grounded at the same time are Waid and Millar(Millars debatable though).
Thanks Kal. And it isn't just us either. We just post on SHH more then others.
Okay in response to Zionite's original post, here's how this boils down to for me and that'll be it: I love the classic as do innumerable other fans, young and old. .
The fans who love the classic are
very numerable as seen by the sales of Supermans books especially pre new 52.The fact that Superman books are constantly whooped by GL and Bat books and actually struggled to be in the top 40 comicbooks pre-52 is a good example.Sales dont lie.
WB is a conglomerate intent on making the Superman property more accessible to a certain demographic of people who would otherwise be fans of Superman marginally or not at all. Sure, I accept this as the reality. I'd certainly like Superman to be more popular. I just think the changes they've made are bad. Frankly, I think it's corporately influenced, pandering, hackery and I don't think they enrich the mythos nor make superman any less silly. But that's just me.
Im not sure what changes you find bad.Sure theyve made some stupid changes new 52 but theyve made some good ones like making Superman act more badass or loosing the trunks. And yes loosing the trunks does make him look less silly.
For me, it's either classic, or rebuild the Superman mythos from the ground up. But again that's just my perspective as a fan and I recognize that not everyone will agree with me.
Rebuildig the Superman mythos is what the new 52 is about
