James Cameron's Sequel to "AVATAR" - Part 1

I'm probably crazy, but I feel like Avatar has been forgotten. People moved on. Maybe I'm wrong. I hear/see nobody talking about it.

I think Titanic is remembered a lot more than Avatar for some reason. I don't hear anyone ever talking about it either, very strange.

You don't? I can see the point for Avatar, but Titanic is a film i see almost everyone remembering, the internet obviously gives the spotlight to other kinds of movies, but i think it's a stretch to say nobody ever talks about it.

Titanic was based on one of the most famous tragedies in history though, Avatar is just another big sci fi movie with a very well worn plot.

What I mean specifically is that I'm concerned that Fox/Cameron is banking on everyone flocking again like they did for the first one, and perhaps the interest isn't there as much anymore. 3 back-to-back sequels is a little overwhelming and I imagine the budget for a project like that has to be close to a billion dollars when you factor in marketing. I hope it doesn't backfire like The Matrix Reloaded/Revolutions.

Plus, there's the issue that they have to be good movies too. If Avatar 2 ends up being a let-down, 3 and 4 are in trouble. And to be honest, 1 wasn't that good to begin with. I thought the writing and the general story were borderline atrocious and by-the-numbers, and so 2,3,&4 are already off to a bad start. Just my opinion.

They "changed the game" in terms of CGI, and I didn't even think THAT was impressive either. And I hate 3D and I think it ruins cinema. Basically, nothing about ANY of this really seems very enticing to me.

Maybe, but I hear plenty of talk of other big films like Star Wars, LotR, Harry Potter, Twylight, Hunger Games, Terminator, Predator, Alien etc maybe because some of them have been around longer or are more current. But then the all comic films too and all the above with the general population. Even smaller films like Mission Impossible, Die Hard, Star Trek, the Bournes, James Bonds seem to get talked about a lot more than the biggest all time film which has 3 sequels currently in development!

It seems Avengers has entered into the pop psyche more than Avatar ever did. Despite making about half the money.

The Avengers kept up the momentum. Avatar was as 3D monster that killed it internationally 6 years ago, then nothing.

I originally misread what rocket man had posted. But I have also seen some others on the net surprised about avatar. I remember some people even being surprised that it had never won best picture when it was nominated. Oh well my bad haha.

with all due respect. Avengers is marvel and Marvel has every year two movies out. characters from Avengers are every year in a new movie.

To be fair, even without all it's connected movies coming out, Avengers did cause more of a cultural impact, in least it's more referenced, and has lines that have become more iconic, Avatar on the other hand, seems to only be referenced for the sillier elements like Unobtanium. It did cause the major impact of 3D, which wasn't just a passing trend, as we're now getting a ton of movies with this schtick.

That said, i'm very excited for the Avatar sequels, with the first film, it felt to me like Cameron was just testing the effects and what he could do, chosing a simple story so that every culture could comprehend it, and i have hopes that now will be his oportunity to play a little more with his universe. So far, he has a perfect track record of sequels, and he seems to be very knowledgeable regarding what makes sequels fail, considering his comments about how he doesn't want these films to end up like the Matrix sequels and how he made a slight comparison between Alien 3 and Temple of Doom.

But then again, people change their minds all the time in Hollywood, i mean, Joss Whedon talked about how Avengers 2 would not be bigger, but more personal, and how he doesn't like when films offer half a story, but now Avengers 2 seems to have an even bigger scale than the previous movie, and Infinity War is being divided into 2 parts.

Avatar lacks those iconic lines and moments that Cameron's previous films have. Moments that Avengers has in spades.

Among fanboys maybe Avengers is more talked about. Among casual moviegoers? I doubt it. I don't know anyone who talks about Avengers. Or care about it (but then I live in Sweden where these superhero-movies aren't that big) And all of this "this movie is more talked about than that" (which usually means a certain movie is discussed more on Internet) doesn't mean much in terms of luring said casual moviegoers to the theaters. Maybe the Avatar-sequels turns out to be new "must see on a big screen"-events. Or maybe not. Impossible to know. I think in terms of visuals we can trust Cameron to deliver that "wow"-factor (which, honestly, today often is a more important factor than an original story) that can make people eager to buy a ticket. And the building of Avatar Land at Animal Kingdom should help building up awareness of the Avatar-universe again

I feel like once the promotion starts, especially if they sell the movie on having a "deeper" story than the first, people will get excited again. Will it make as much as the first, most likely not. But IDK if it has to. If it makes say TDK/TDKR-level money, that's still really successful.

It's not a line that people go 'Oh Avatar right?"

I'm sure it varies depending on who a person typically interacts with like you say. Was just recounting my own experience which I find very strange in that it doesn't seem to get talked about in my circle while nearly every other major film gets mentioned. Those other films on the list had made a big cultural impact after their first film and those are just examples of films that get talked about the most. One off (so far) films like Goodfellas, Inception, Independence Day, and many of the classic Disney films, even bloody Frozen.. and indeed Titanic (which was on the original list ) seem to get brought up more.

And I enjoy watching Avatar too, one of the best blu-rays technically that I own. I don't really want to continue debating specific examples as it will seem like I'm disagreeing with you when I'm not. Just weird that I don't personally hear the film discussed any more given how big it was, how recent it still is and with all these sequels in production. Hopefully the sequels completely change that and I'm looking forward to seeing what Cameron comes up with.

Not sure, but i believe Titanic had various memorable moments, definitely left its mark on pop culture and after almost 20 years, people still seem to talk about it. I feel like the Avatar sequels may bring in more elements worth discussion than the first film though.
