Guardians of the Galaxy James gunn fired!!!

I think we should keep in mind that James Gunn has no criminal records, and his controversial tweets were from 10 years ago. I think this is why he was hired, because he didn't commit any crimes and probably had a pretty good reputation within the industry. It's sad that it had to come to this, but Disney had no reason not to hire him in the first place. I think they will probably have to check the Twitter history of all the employees they hire from now on though.

What if they check the Twitter history of all their existing ones and find skeletons there? Will there be a mass firing of directors, producers and actors?

The others in the MCU ought to be checking their Twitter accounts to make sure they're transparent and have nothing to hide.

While what he tweeted was bad I think most people's concerns are for a slippery slope where stuff that isn't as offensive could still be used against them in their careers. But then you get into what is offensive and what ain't.

It's often the finger pointing, virtue signaling, professionally offended, sjw weirdos who get exposed for being the monsters they project on to others for having differing viewpoints. It's truly a sight to behold when they self-destruct like this and it’s damn satisfying to be honest.

Gunn is a vile human being beyond his vile politics. What's as telling is the fact that the trades and the media were going to ignore this until Disney did the right thing and fired his ass. Defending sickness because he crusades the way they like? WTF?

Wow. So because the messenger was flawed, so is the message? Not trying to turn this political but you’re really generalizing here.

2018: Fight rape culture unless it's against somebody you like.

Derp. Nope. I would never clamor for anyone to lose their job for tweets like this. I'll save that for people with more time on their hands.

Starting a witch hunt for all aspiring comedians and provocateurs is not a major concern in my life.

That is an understandable concern. But I think this is a bad case to try and make that. Especially for someone who works for Disney.

I like how calling yourself a comedian or a provocateur somehow absolves someone of what they do or say. He said this stuff, it was his choice to say it. If it came back to haunt him, that is his fault for saying it in the first place not knowing where his life would take him. Though he was already a filmmaker, so yeah.

Yup. Honestly, everything Gunn tweeted would have been right at home on the Howard Stern show when I was listening to it on my morning commute...oh gawd, 20-odd years ago...crap, I’m old. Pedo jokes? Howard had a running routine at the time about how the Olsen twins, who would have been like 12-13 then, were hot. Racist, sexist and homophobic gags were fired off like machine gun bullets, the only relief being scatological humor like his “Fartman” character and stories of his on-air partner Robin’s enemas.

Like Gunn’s stuff it was all designed to be offensive. Is it also funny? Sometimes. There were days I had to pull over because I was laughing so hard, and other days when it was just gross and I couldn’t change stations fast enough. I understand why Disney did what it did but I can’t get too bent out of shape about the tweets.

Senator Ted Cruz thinks Gunn should be criminally investigated. The same guy who supported Roy Moore and is supporting Donald Trump.

Is Gunn's career really over, or just for mainstream studio films?

short term probably

long-term no. the man made 2 films that made a quarter billion dollars that were unique, with the first one being completely out of left field and nobody could've predicted the success

if anything guys like ted cruz going after him, will help his case long-term that he got witch-hunted over politics

On a longer time table, he'll be fine, but the moral panic really, really needs to die down first.

I loved both GOTG films so I am genuinely disappointed that Gunn wont be back to close out the trilogy, especially as the success of the franchise, and also the reason why I fell in love with these characters, is in large part due to his unique take, but I can understand why Disney made the decision to fire him.

I think it is unfair for it be over some, to say the least, out of bound comments that he made years ago on Twitter, especially since that there isn't any kind of formal allegation against him, but in todays political climate, keeping him aboard would open just another huge can of worms so I get the decision even if I don't entirely agree with it.

If I'm employed by Disney, I'm deleting all old tweets and maybe Twitter all together.

Well there's no need for that. Either they get someone else to run their Twitter accounts, or better still, don't feel the need to have to post or comment about everything.

Most actors, directors and public figures do normally have the sense to do that though. There should be a certain professionalism about not engaging too much with the public, and certainly not getting into any debate.

Josh Trank, when he was working on Fant4stic, got into it too much with fans and the public in general. He acted unprofessionally, and also made comments about Fox too. Eventually his Twitter account was shut down.

Gunn should've maintained a certain professional distance. No inciting others to do certain things, and no posting every single thought that comes into his head, especially when he's got a dark cellar full of thoughts.

Just like Trump shouldn't be spending his time on Twitter and getting into it with everyone because of his thin skin. That's just not becoming of a president. But try telling that to him.

See how Meghan Markle, once she became engaged to Prince Harry and then especially once married, shut down her blog and stopped posting on social media?

If Trump had married into the royal family, you can imagine he'd be bringing disgrace on the Queen with all of his tweets.

Now obviously Disney is not the same as the Queen, but Gunn should've acted in a way that was becoming and appropriate as a Disney/ Marvel representative now. And someone should really have advised him to delete all those old tweets. Perhaps they did, and he refused?

If someone at Disney had told Gunn to delete his tweets from that time period or he could face repercussions such as being fired from the franchise he made incredibly successful, I'm certain he would have done it.

Was this already posted?

It hasn't been that I've seen. I love Mike and Jay, lol.

Before GotG, I knew of Gunn for two things; that scene in Super and having watched Slither.

And there's an online petition to reinstate Gunn.

What if they reinstate him, and then there's an online petition to fire him again?

Disney need to just stick to their guns.

Personally, I doubt Disney had checked Gunn's Twitter history before hiring him; I think if they had known, they'd realize that it could be a time bomb down the road. I doubt their vetting process involved checking the person's social media history, and I hope they have included that in their new application policy.

I have an feeling Donald Trump is behind this, every bad thing has happened because of him. Donald Trump probably wrote an letter to Disney to get James Gunn fired by telling Disney that he made fake tweets about the stuff that the incident mentioned
