Were they added maybe because Ayer thought Letos smile was "lacking"?

I don't mind the tattoos one bit but the teeth would just look 10 times better without the grill.
I can't see Ayer changing anything about him but once he's in Afflecks hands I could see him atleast making that minor change

If they want to change the Joker's look in future films, it shouldn't be a problem. Nothing is done that can't be undone. If this version of the character can sit through hours of tattoo work, he can sit through hours of tattoo removal (or hell, maybe an extra long chemical bath at ACE could serve as a skin peel of sorts). If he's wearing false teeth, nothing stops him from wearing normal-looking ones.

If they're really interested in taking a page out of Morrison's book, then the Joker is all about reinvention and rebirth anyway. It'd be very interesting if different filmmakers gave us different versions of the Leto Joker, to drive home this idea.

It looks like it's from the Asylum scene. Maybe Harley wasn't strapped all the way down on the table and she knocked some teeth out.

Don't get the hate for the grill, it adds character.

Nicholson - Perma cheek smile
Ledger - Scar smile
Leto - Grill smile

All have distinct characteristics that will set them apart. An ordinary smile is boring. I see what Ayer was going for. That smile of silver shine in the dark will be an awesome shot.

The tattoos I could do without but they've grown on me. I never hated them, just surprising.

Wayyyyy to early to say that. Keep expectations in check man. I liked BvS theatrical cut. However, after that Comic Con trailer the year before I expected BvS to be as good or better than TDK. Lets just hope for a good film. t:
