And how'd that work out for Josh Trank again?

I'm not accusing him of lying. I'm simply stating he's a smart dude who knows how the Hollywood game works.

If you don't think you're calling David Ayer a liar, then I recommend you look up the dictionary definition of the word "liar."

He has tweeted out an Emiliano Zapata quote in the face of all the negative reviews. The one about it being better to die on your feet than live on your knees. I think WB let him make the film he wanted to make.

I don't get how these Joker scenes are cut when Deadpool had pegging, ratings difference aside, and still pulled of being the goofy comic book film.

He is lying. He's just playing the game. Josh Trank ruined his career by not playing the game.

Snyder has his flaws, but he didn't bite the hand that feeds him.

Because Deadpool was made for under $60 million, and they lost another $7 million and three action sequences right before production. In other words, they could pretty much do whatever they wanted.

Suicide Squad is on the hook for probably in the realm of $250-$300 million. Meaning they can't do whatever they want like Deadpool.

I agree that its a good move on his part, and he must be really restraining himself knowing his outspoken attitude. I honestly feel bad for the guy.
this part. i watched a lot of interviews with Ayer and what he is doing right now is amazing. he is holding back a lot :woot:

So help me understand, you guys: Are you all under the impression that there is a special David Ayer director's cut of this movie that is good enough to have done much better than 28% on Rotten Tomatoes? And that WB interfered and made a new cut for whatever reason, and that is what everyone is now forced to watch in theaters? And that WB is hiding the good movie from us on purpose?

Evidence suggests that there was an even darker more somber cut that was probably closer in tone to the first Comic-Con trailer with that sad, slow song.

Then apparently it didn't test well, so they tried to make a cut that was evocative of the trailer with the Bohemian Rhapsody song in it. So still edgy but it had this sort of poppy almost Quentin Tarantino comic book style.

Based on what I've read, besides making Joker into a cuddly teddy bear and a hopeless romantic, I get the sense that final cut is the result of trying to make it really poppy with the top 40 chart songs and all the cool graphics (by graphics I mean how the introduce the Squad members with that fancy onscreen text) and having all those flashback introductions frontloaded in the first act.

Could be wrong.

Just to be fair, Joss Whedon wanted his Avengers movie to be framed by those Maria Hill scenes, which didn't test well and got taken out. Not sure how he feels about that and if he really loved those scenes or didn't mind losing them. That being said, IMHO, those Maria Hill scenes borderline KILL the movie.

From July 23rd

This meme started, that we were re-shooting to make the movie funnier. But you saw the film. The tone is wall to wall. It was really, more than anything, about just taking time out of the movie, distilling it down and keeping it alive and kinetic. I don’t want to speak out of school, but I think the institutional lesson of Batman V Superman was, you have to put the film up for a large audience and see how it plays. I got the opportunity to do that a few times. I’m a big believer in audience testing. You have to listen to the audience. I think it really made the film a lot better. We interdicted some issues and then the re-shoots are great because as you slip time, you end up with these raw stumps. It helps you sew them together elegantly. And I also got some more action in there. It’s all a tough process, because in essence, you’re on trial and you have to defend your movie. And the burden of proof is on you to show that it works.

That doesn't really prove anything. Josh Trank was saying similar things all the way up until right before Fant4stic's release and then he had a meltdown and posted that infamous tweet.

Did anyone have the chance to read the fancy onscreen text to introduce the Squad members? It seemed to flashby so quickly and be pointless, at least highlight some points. why put it up there and not give people who know nothing about the characters at least a chance especially given that the characters were hardly further developed in the movie

Jared Leto cut his hair to be in #SuicideSquad. And then they cut half his scenes. Warner Bros? More like Joker Bros.

That's fine. People can believe him or not believe him. I guess we will never know how much of it is truth or made up unless he pulls something very later down the road.

If Suicide Squad had Harley Quinn pegging The Joker, it might be one of the best movies of all time.

I think it's clear the general test audiences didn't like the comic book relationship of Joker and Harley so they changed it up so the general audiences would like it better and now Joker plays a lesser role but it messed with the pacing and final battle of the film. I think crowds will really dig the film more than these critics.

Suicide Squad basically made Jared Leto's Joker into a heroic good guy in the brief time we get to see him.

I am by no means saying that I believe that if Ayer had produced a cut of his original vision, and the studio allowed it that it would be better received critically than the jumbled mess we have in theaters today. I have seen all of David’s other films, and though I don’t think he’s the best director on the block, his filmography proves that he’s capable of making a much better film with an even tone throughout, and that is not the film we got. People can believe what they want but upon watching it, it reeks of studio interference.

Well if their intention was to do something 'different' then mission accomplished. Not in a good way.

I'm on the other side of things, I still really enjoyed Leto's Joker.

Don't get too excited for this Joker. His role was almost entirely showed in the trailers, and there's not even one iconic scene or line of dialogue by him. He doesn't even DO anything interesting or menacing here, he's just... there.

I can agree with that to an extent. Unlike Jack or Heath's Jokers, Leto's does not have that one standout scene that will go down in comic book movie history as an iconic moment.

But it's not unusual for a proven director to lay an egg. Even Steven Spielberg has a few outright bad films in his oeuvre. You may have the feeling that Suicide Squad reeks of studio interference, but you must understand that that attitude reeks of fanboy denial. We've seen that before, on these very message boards, earlier this year. Admittedly, ultimately, I suppose it could go either way. At this point, though, David Ayer's word is the strongest indication of truth we have. And, right now, his word is that the version in theaters is his own.

The Blu-ray comes out late this year, probably. So we will just have to wait and see.

My cousin and two of her friends caught the movie last night and thought Leto's Joker was, in what minuscule screen-time he had, "oddly adorable, like a love-sick puppy dog". I haven't seen it myself, but crikey, not words I'd normally associate with The Joker.

Sums it up pretty nicely, imo.

I enjoyed Leto as the Joker, but I agree that he was revolving to much about Harley. I get it, he is obsessed with her, but they clearly cut a lot out and left in bare bones of his scenes. It still worked, but I missed the cut stuff. And it's clear as day that the GA didn't respond well to the abuse because their relationship had no violence in this cut.

But here is the thing, I saw this with a friend who liked the movie so much and the Joker so much she wants to see it again. When I told her of their abusive relationship it made her even more interested that she asked me to send her some of the comics they are in together. This is a person who knows jack **** about comic books or Harley and just movie versions of the Joker.
