It's a good thing he's not the villian in this film lol, he literally exists for the sole purpose of introducing Harley Quinn to the audience and showing her story.

Also those tweets are more try hard than anything Jared has done. The need for people to hate and reach with these lame tweets they are embarassing themselves.
Good point. He also has about half less time than Lecter and much less good writing material to work with, kudos to Leto for still making a strong impression imo.

Hannibal Lecter is only in Silence of the Lambs for 16 mins out of a total 138. You can deliver an iconic villain in a short amount of time, Leto did not.
while i agree, hopkins had actual scenes where he could build the character and breath in. leto not so much. plus his entire appearance is single-minded - get my baby out of prison so we can have nice cool grape soda and hot sexy times on a lovely bear skin rug.

Yes, he was like a character in a Elvis Presley film lol

Exactly. Film was working against him. Also, 16 minutes is not that little time in movie terms... it is certainly much more than Leto was given.

Jared starts filming a new movie in Japan in September (The Outsider), perfect timing to go to the Suicide Squad premiere in Japan September 10th :p Anticipating more interviews about his cut scenes...

Yep. The film worked against him.

Let me help those who don't understand how editing can change the setup/performance.

Think of the Joker scene when he meets the crime bosses at the table. Imagine if all he does is the pencil trick, says you can't do nothing for free and then escapes.

- Imagine the scene with Batman heavily cut down. Batman just starts throwing him around and then says you'll never find them both.

- Think of the scene with Harvey Dent. No setup. Just says do I look like a guy with a plan? Then puts a gun in his hand and then says his chaos bit.

etc etc etc.

Leto got screwed. Could he have done better? Sure. However, we don't know if his best is on the cutting room floor.

Nolan/Ledger had a slow build up to each scene that had such a wonderful payoff.

Ayer seemed to let Leto do whatever and then was forced to cut the film down to make it fun.

I'm not going to argue against people who dislike him. Some already made up their mind based on the aesthetic. The performance/editing didn't do him any favors.

However, I still think we have a good actor in the role going forward.

CapedCrusader14, you're making me want to re-watch The Mask again. For the love of everything that's holy, please stop. :argh:

The end of civilization as we know it. Our alien overlord has arrived.

Exactly.

And that Lecter example was thrown around in this thread a thousand times over the last few months in defense of reports that Leto has limited screen time in this movie. Its all ok, he doesn't need much screen time to be awesome. Look at Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs is all we kept hearing here.

If your character is quality, you can make an awesome impression in ten minutes. Leto didn't. I can't even put the blame entirely on his crap love puppy for Harley story. I mean Lecter spent the bulk of his screen time just sitting in a cell talking to Clarice. But Hopkins' performance was scenery chewing awesomeness.

Technically neither was Lecter. Buffalo Bill was.

I just love how Affleck essentially did nothing as Bruce/Batman in both of his lackluster boring performances and people praised/praise him. Yet Leto who actually acted and transformed himself gets dumped on... Makes sense.

Leto might not feel like the Joker in the traditional sense but neither did Ledger. However his performance was still great in my book. Problem was the limited screentime and garbage writing. People love to over exaggerate the hell out of things, I swear...

Don't lump me in that category. Affleck's Batman gets no praise from me.

Ledger had far more in common with the Joker than Letoker's did; http://jokerfans.blogspot.ie/

Harley was the sole reason Joker was even in this movie and they didn't even get his relationship with her right.

I just can't jive with the Hannibal comparison for the simple fact even in the very scenes Leto was in, he doesn't even get to really perform beyond saying a few lines and disappearing off again. Literally not a single scene of letting the audience sink into this character.

Hannibal/Clarice's first scene alone left a lasting impression and didn't need the rest of the film for us to know it was a special performance. That's largely in part thanks to Hopkins, but the so too the dialog, the direction, and playing off of Jodie.

Leto did not have that opportunity and was absolutely short-changed by the editing. I'll be the first to say this introduction was a dud. But I won't write it off until he has the surrounding material and crew, where my finger can't point anywhere else but to him.

Technically neither was Lecter. Buffalo Bill was.

Most of us assumed that Leto would have at least 15 mins though.

He had 7. Some even say 6.

Lets break it down

Spoilers for those who haven't seen the movie

- One quick shot of them in a therapy session
- One quick shot of him torturing Harley
- The Monster T scene seems like 7 minute scene cut down to one minute.
-30 second car chase scene
- The 20 second scene of him laying around the knives
- A minute scene with the security guard (He was losing me for a second, but when he jumped into lap and grinned I chuckled. Seemed a bit TDKR there.) still a another scene shortened.
- The quick scene of him putting the neck bomb gun into someone's neck
- The flashback of him and Harley at Ace Chemicals. Another scene that was probably 6 or 7 mins cut down to 2 mins.
- The 2 minute scene on the chopper. Where all he's doing is firing a gun (great), says a few lines to Harley and the chopper is blown up.
- 15 seconds of seeing her at the end.

All this over the course of 6 to 7 mins.

Seeing if Leto could carry a full scene would have told me a lot about his Joker. I could probably judge there if this is going to work or not. The choppy editing stuff...its a mixed bag.
I think personally I would have rather just seen a full 7 minute scene of just Harley and Joker in Arkham.

Surprise us at the end when he breaks her out.

I would have just edited out all the other Joker stuff (keep the montage of her diving in).

Cut out the whole subplot of him trying to steal her throughout the movie.

That way it seems like Joker doesn't care at all about her being locked up. Then at the very end when he frees her its still ambiguous if he truly cares for her or just want her as his "toy".

Its pretty much assumed he'll be in it along with all of batman's rogues like in arkham asylum

Thats a writing issue, not a performance issue.

Also, i didn't say you praised Affleck but the majority of people do for some reason.

Yep.

I can understand those underwhelmed. However, I'm not sure this is the movie we can decide if his Joker can work or not.

As a first impression its a dud. Especially with all the hype.

If we had Batman/Joker movie already and we'd probably have gravitated towards his character more. Assuming he did good in that role.

Didn't care for his take. Even just visually he looks so wrong as the Joker that it's hard to get past. Like Miley Cyrus on acid

I loved Affleck in the Batman role. Just my opinion.

However, I feel like Affleck and Leto really needed a Batman movie first. Would have set things up very well for BvS and Suicide Squad.

Truth be told WB would have been better off having MoS 2 in 2016 and the Batman solo this year as well. Then make BvS and SS in 2017 along with Wonder Woman.

This is the downside of rushing things.

Loki had a chance to make people fall in love with his villain role in Thor...
