That's really what it comes down to for me. The performance needs to be more controlled. The impression I got from what little footage we've seen is that Leto gave so many different takes, that when it came time to edit the performance together, there was no consistency in his characterization. Instead of there being one uniform performance, it was like he gave a series of little mini-performances that varied from scene to scene.
Leto and Affleck need to spend more time finding out just who this guy is, and hone in on that. Channel it. Give it more direction. For as insane as the Joker is, I want to believe in him as a flesh-and-blood, living and breathing person. I don't want a cartoon character in three-dimenson.
