In The Meg, Jason Statham plays a diver tasked with rescuing the crew of a deep-sea submersible after it has been attacked by the titular creature, a 75-foot-long shark known as the Megalodon. So, did the Fast and Furious franchise star actually go swimming with sharks prior to shooting director Jon Turtletaub’s movie? Of course he did. He’s Jason bloody Statham!!!

“On the early stages of the prep, we took a trip to Fiji, and we went diving with some bull sharks,” says the British actor. “They hand-feed them and it’s a spectacular thing to see. These things are three meters in length, huge big things. There were 20 or 30 of these things, and they were hand-feeding [them] big tuna heads, and we got very, very close, and it was a spectacular moment. To swim in close proximity to a big, three-meter shark, is to be recommended to all and everyone.”

And he wasn’t scared at all?

“You know, it’s funny, because you get anxiety when you’re on the boat,” says Statham. “But once you get in the ocean, things take a very different turn. You get very relaxed, and when you’re in their environment, it’s quite a tranquil sort of thing, the anxiety goes away completely. It’s remarkable to experience. All of the fear — or the perceived fear — is done in your own head before you get down there with them. Once you’re swimming down there with all the other divers, it’s phenomenal. It’s one of the greatest experiences you could have, for me anyway. I’m a big SCUBA diver fanatic. Wherever I am in the world, if I get a chance to get in the ocean, I do.”

The Meg costars Winston Chao, Li Bingbing, Rainn Wilson, Ruby Rose, Page Kennedy, Jessica McNamee, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Robert Taylor, Cliff Curtis, Shuya Sophia Cai, and Masi Oka.

They better have some good shark chomping stuff in this movie :)

Love that new image. My fiance likened the people in the rubber rings to Cheerios in a cereal bowl which, the more I think of it, is pretty apt.

That's why you shouldn't swim in the water. There are leviathans in it.

Oh yum I love froot loops.

This is going to be fun. I hope the shark roars and Jason says “shut up meg” lol

If he doesn’t punch or roundhouse kick a shark, then they might as well shut production down.

a good size for the shark. big/small enough that he has a reason to bite and eat humans.

I love me a Shark movie, looking forward to getting a look at this in the first trailer.

On a slightly related note, does anyone know where I can find that Daily Show clip of John Oliver complaining about the Shark Week Megalodon hoax from a few years back? Comedy Central's site no longer has it.

Pleased to eat you? Is this supposed to be B movie? Thought we were getting something closer to Jurassic park.

Yup. This is a big budget 'B' movie and it was always intended like that. It's Cockney Professor vs Big a$$ Megalodon. What did you expect?? :D :D

If Jaws is Jurassic Park of shark movies, Meg will be Jurassic World.

Bigger, louder and a lot dumber.

Agreed. Guess this is going the Piranha route.

I've read all the MEG series books. Never thought they came across as campy or full of parody.

OMG, I was hoping for some blood n guts.

But "pleased to eat you"? :whatever::whatever::whatever:

That tagline is gonna be used all kinds of wrong.

Also if bingbing is his love interest I'll have shades of Transporter 1.

"Pleased to Eat You!"

Genius!

Love the poster, but I get the feeling someone's gonna edit that and the trailer with Meg from Family Guy in place of the shark. MARK MY WORDS.:woot:
