Jill Scott's Essay on Interracial Relationships - Part 1

It's amazing what a crappy job Hollywood does in depicting interracial couples in 2015. Test-audience obsessed chicken s****, the lot of them.

It does seem that it takes a lot of work for a white woman to truly be attracted to you if you're black.

And as far as interracial relationships on TV and movies go, maybe it's just me, but it never seems to be a problem when it's a black woman and a man of a different race. It's only a controversy when it's an interracial relationship involving a black man

Yea there are black and white people that still get mad at an interracial couple ( black man and white woman).

I always think it's weird when people bring up the lack of white girl/non-white guy pairings on TV, because I remember Fred/Gunn on Angel like 10+ years ago, but then I remember that it's been barely followed up on since then. I mean, there's Glenn and Maggie on The Walking Dead... and that's kind of it.

We could've gotten Karen Gillan/John Cho too, if more of you f***ers had watched Selfie! :argh:

The stats are even worse if you include ALL media representations, particularly television commercials.

And on the rare occasions they do depict interracial couples it always has to be central to some hackneyed plot about race relations (that always seems dated by two or three decades in its heavy-handedness). They hardly ever have a couple that just happen to be interracial and are in a movie that has nothing to do with that aspect of their relationship.

(And yes, I know I'm quoting myself, but I wanted to add some additional thoughts and it was too many posts back to edit it in :o )

And then you cast one of the whitest gals in hollywood to play an asian. Cameron Crowe can **** off.

Yea I heard Emma Stone was suppose to be asian in that crappy Aloha movie. What the heck?

Did he really do that?? Well, I guess I'm not shocked. The hipster hack hasn't made a film worth watching since 'Almost Famous' which came out.... 15 years ago?

Hollywood has a nasty history of casting white people as Asians, it pisses me off that they continue to do that. There are plenty of half Asian actresses who could have played that role.

Speaking of Asian actors; I would like to see one big American action movie starring an Asian guy where he isn't portrayed as a sexless killing machine who knows martial arts.

Clearly they were just looking for the best actress for the part, it's not racism, really. :o

I normally agree with you, so I'm hoping that's sarcasm? White people shouldn't play Asians any more than they should play blacks.

No, really, I see no problem with it. It's just looking for the best actress with no creepy age difference between her and Cooper and there's no racism involved.

So yes I'm being sarcastic. :oldrazz:

Does.... does this mean I should never be able to play Othello? :csad:

Okay, phew. :yay: I thought it seemed out of character.

And Sawyer, you can be whoever you want to be. Follow your dreams, young man.

Wasn't that Han from the Fast & Furious movies?

Yea, I am black and I am attracted to women of all races and I don't have a problem with interracial relationships. But in 2015 there are people that still have an issue with interracial couples. It's rare to see interracial couples on TV Shows and movies still. And if they do its even more rare to see them kiss or have a love scene.
You need to check out British TV because interracial pairings are extremely common. It really isn't a big deal.

Off the top of my head I think of shows featuring interracial pairings such as Luther, Misfits, Crims, Scott & Bailey, Downton Abbey, Utopia, Fortitude, Doctor Who, Skins, Being Human, Green Wing and Safe House.

Partly the reason for this is because of public funded TV like the BBC means you have to have diverse casting and the other reason is they just want to reflect modern Britain.

Hollywood is so full of s***. You have guys like Ridley Scott saying we can't cast any actors of middle eastern ancestry in Exodus because there aren't any actors of that background that are box office stars.

Hollywood doesn't cast actors with diverse backgrounds in leading roles which means they can't raise their profile and become stars. It is a self fulfilling prophecy.

They don't give minorities opportunities and then use it as an excuse to whitewash movies.

Even the ugliest white dude won't settle for a less than hot black chick, haha.

That's me being trademark facetious, but there is a little truth there.

The only form of movie racism allowed is that of Nicolas Cage playing any racial character. I would pay money to see him play black, latino, asian, and everybody on this earth. The only man that gets that racial pass.
