So I've been working at a basketball camp filming and editing to put together a DVD for them, and talk came up about TDK, and one of the guest speakers, who is big on sports says Heath Ledger killed himself. I gave him all these reported facts stating otherwise and he asked me from where I got it and I said Superhero Hype. He laughed at the name and started asking questions mocking me until I stopped him and said:

"I've got a question for you. Were you a jock in highschool?"
"Yeah"
"And jocks aren't seen as smart right?"
"Yeah"
"Interesting."
"Why?"
"Well you see, in highschool I'm a geek/nerd who is techy as you can see with me putting together the DVD and I'm into comic books."
"Uh-"
"I'm not finished. The stereotypes for geeks and nerds is that we're always reading and studying and looking at our comic books for fun while the jocks are outside socializing and playing sports right?"
"Yeah,"
"So, as a jock you picked on and mocked the geeks because they were different or maybe even because they got better marks then you. And now, the camp you're apart of is here asking me the geek to film for you. So you want a good DVD? I bet you're wishing you didn't mistreat the geeks"
"Yeah but -I'm not an official part of the camp really"
"Ok, well you said you work for TVDSB? I know the President of TVDSB and he's a pretty smart man, looks to me like you've ended up working for a geek."
"Yeah but- what was your question"
" 'Were you a jock in highschool' and 'Jocks aren't seen as smart right?' "
"You already asked those questions"
"...you just proved my point."

Thank you Reed Richards. Post your Jock/Geek confrontations. (I play soccer as well but it's all in moderation)

Wow that whole Jock/Geek stuff is real?

I thought it was just stuff you guys put in them hollywood movies.

I'm built like a jock, but have the personality of geek...it's so confudsing!!!

it's real alright
interestingly, hollywood is partly responsible for popularizing such elitist behavior

PWNED, you told him.

So you threatened to purposely ruin the girl you were hired for because some guy's whose life peaked in high school mocked you? Grow up.

I felt like a geek reading that dumb confrontation.

Why couldn't you have said CNN, or any other actual news source to say where you found your information? They all published and wrote about Heath and debunked the rumors. Of course you saying "Well, I learn my news from Super Hero Hype.com" would make someone laugh, hell, I'd laugh at you for saying that, because it doesn't sound like a reputable source, especially to someone whose never heard of it before.

I just would have beat the **** out of him.

You should be secure enough with yourself and what your doing with your life. There are alot of people that can be considerd jocks(myself) and also read comic books, make films, and do nerdy stuff(myself) I work in the tv production biz and it's a waste of time to generalize people like that.

So did A-Man get punched in the face or not?

What in blazes are you going on about?

So did A-Man get punched in the face or not?
No. I did not. He's almost double my age (me being 16) so I don't think he would've dared to punch someone that much younger than him. :cwink:

you're only 16?? no wonder. right now, you have all the balls in the world, and no sense of humility. in time, you'll learn to control your pride/ego/emotions. and laugh at the ridiculousness of taking some things too seriously. like this particular encounter.

it's just Batman, for cryin' out loud.

I completely agree

The jocks/geeks stereotype is stupid. There are a LOT of smart people who play sports, and there are also plenty of idiots who do activities that are classified as "nerdy." Are jocks encouraged to have an elitist attitude in our society? Often. But even that doesn't make them "dumb," just wrongly arrogant.

I am both a geek and a jock. I get the best of both worlds :woot:

Besides the fact that the jocks/geeks division is pretty much ******ed, I don't really see any value in the way this conversation went. It's hardly a victory if you have to take that long to make your point.

Where I come from there was no such divide. I've never understood that aspect of American society.

I was always the confuser in school, and still am I guess today, I wouldn't even say I looked 'Jock like' - more 'kill you for spilling my drink-like' (so I'm told) - which is completely unintentional, it's just the way I'm put together, at first glance people always assume I'm going to be unnaproachable. If I had a pound for evey time somebody said after speaking to me "this is so far from what I was expecting" - I'd be a millionaire, well, I'd have more like around 90 pounds, but you get the picture.
