Judge Dredd Reboot!!

So I just download the script. I haven't read it but I will later this week.

Now, I know it's an earlier draft, but I have to admit that after reading some of positive reviews, I'm still questioning why Garland (the writer) didn't use more characters from the comic? Isn't it weird that the previoius (and potentially inferior) Stallone film used a lot of the characters from the comics (even the ABC robot from another 2000 AD series), and this didn't? Even despite the fact that this new version is more in line with the tone of the comics?

For example, in the script there's the 'Chief Judge' who is just a generic judge character; couldn't she be based on someone?

Well, I think that the main reason they aren't using, say, Judge Death, Mechanismo, or Cursed Earth mutants, is because, they've been given a "budget to work from". This is a $45 million film, not $80 million. It's the budget of "Predators", not "The Fifth Element". It's prefferable that they just focus on making a modest-budgeted film with a solid script with this first one. Then, provided that this one makes a profit, make the sequel with more money to have comic villains in there and make them right.

As for the Chief Judge; she's described as being middle-age. It's Chief Judge McGruder. Who else?

How tall is urban exactly? Does anyone know? I imagine they need to give the impression hes gigantic if they want him to come across as being Dredd.

Well from that preview picture im liking what i see, but his suit does seem to have a hint of green to it. Still like it though...

oh, thats taller than I thought, but I guess it was the rock who de-biggened him in Doom.
but Dredd needs to look imposing, I'm not sure 185 looks so imposing..

Looks appropriately like armor and I swear I see Stallone under the helmet
Also, Dredd never takes his helmet off, so in the comics there was never casual moment or formal occasion where he would be required to take it off?

I read only few of the comics but know the general history.

I read only few of the comics but know the general history.

Whenever there was a shot of Dredd without the helmet, his face would be conveniently in shadow. Also, there was this one storyline where he did go around without his helmet, but he was heavily disfigured at the time, so his true face remained unrevealed.

but i'm cautiously optimistic... and I hope we at least get one wideshot from above where we see the Justice Department-building and the grand scale of MCO.

I "Blade Runner", Sebastian's apartment block looked like a Holiday Inn foyer before they lit it and dressed it. Same with the dead marshes scene in LOTR, which was done in a parking lot.

Just watched the original Judge Dredd again and I gotta say, it renewed my interest in this movie. The original Dredd is great fun when you're watching it with friends, but I'm really looking forward to see what else someone could've done with that kind of material.

Without a shadow of a doubt, it will be rated R. They've already stated that this is going to be very gritty and dark. Like Paul Verhoven's "Robocop" and "Total Recall".

Just watched the original Judge Dredd again and I gotta say, it renewed my interest in this movie. The original Dredd is great fun when you're watching it with friends, but I'm really looking forward to see what else someone could've done with that kind of material.

I think on a visual level, the film had a great sense of style and decent visual effects. But it does have that..(I don't know how to explain it)...very 90s camp feel.

Here's a character that's ripe for a reboot: 'Judge Dredd'. The mega-popular British sci fi character has had the Hollywood treatment once before in the 1995 film that starred Sylvester Stallone as the title character. The movie was bad enough to make Mania's Top 15 Worst Superhero Movies of all time.

I actually liked Judge Dredd.

The 1995 film can be enjoyable, I guess, if you pretend that it's not called "Judge Dredd" and rather it's "Demolition Man 2". Then it works. To a certain point.

I dont mind it to be honest. There are scenes that are good in that they are the closest we had to true 2000AD celluloid thus far and I enjoy the look of the movie (thought they get the asthetic down pretty good), the ABC warrior and Mean Angel were fun, Dyane Lane was fit as all hell as Hershey, Max Von Sydow was good as always and if you check your brain in for the most part, it's mostly an enjoyable romp.

There are obviously bad scenes too.

For me, they mostly feature Rob Scheinder and Armand 'over-actor with wild eyes' Assante who leaves me eternally asking why, oh, why did Stallone not just double up as Rico, given that Rico and Dredd are bloody clones and are supposed to look identical? With a bit of a script re-working and some carefully blocked shots, we wouldnt have had to see Dredd's face in full view as the studio wouldve been happy with Stallone's face on view as Rico. All the movies problems basically stem from the fact that they show Dredd's face about 15 minutes into the movie and this has an effect on the plot from there on in; the movie as a result goes from something with promise to [at times] generic science fiction future city movie number #1254.

Hiho all..

Here I sit, this forum on one monitor, the Lawgiver design spinning around on the other..

To awnser a few questions, Jock wasn't the only person to do concepts work on this movie. As far as I know he did pre-pre production work, moods, feelings and the like, but since we started I haven't seen anything else. They do keep us on a tight leash, so I do stand to be corrected. There were 7 of us at one point. The three of us from Altered States ( Jason & Andre Human and myself) are tied in to the manufacturing side of things (hence why some of my facebook updates involved manufacturing comments), props, bits of wardrobe, little bits of set dressing here and there, while the other 4 from Hero concept art (Joe Pistorius, Lorraine Alvarez, Daniel Hugo and Graeme Cowie) were doing more sets. They had a more limited run on the show, as they came in later and didn't have the fortune to be associated with the fabrication department, and were more or less done when they started to nail the first bits of wood together.

Personally I've been doing the Lawgiver, the Lawmaster's cannons and one or two other weapons and some small stuff. The Lawgiver was my baby, so to speak, and I'm really, really chuffed that it's been so well received. Obviously I had an initial concept from Jock to work on, and had to work within the designers brief, but it's not their birthday and Land Rover's license plate number in the weapons serial number

I must admit that early on I was somewhat skeptical of some of the decisions being made, but by seeing more and more of the bigger picture it's all fitting better and making a lot more sense. Also seeing the sets and having a look on the monitors (for instance, I needed to sort out some paperwork for my car and had to go to the civic center, seeing the set, then visited a location shoot which happened to be up the road from where I live) is making me really excited about the look of this picture. I might be biased because I'm so close to the show, but I feel it's going to be pretty good. Hopefully I won't end up having to eat my words here..

Everyone here is working very hard to create a good result. Obviously with a big production like this (big for South African standards, that is..), there's going to be the odd communication failure, but so far the atmosphere's been great, which helps.

I'd LOVE to show everyone the pics I've taken so far, but I'm in no position to do so without jeopardizing my position. I'd rather err on the side of caution and not spoil anything.. But as said before, there are definitely eagles, the helmet doesn't look that big when you're standing next to him and yes, she's blonde.. But don't expect to see anything changing. Everything is locked down.
