Reason enough alone why we wont have seen the last of him, regardless of the fortunes of Dredd.

Also agreed,

i am (was) full of hope when i heard urban was on board, and that he was a fan.

the lawmaster image is the first thing that has dissapointed me, i dont want a cheap mad max rip off, while i am a fan of the original mad max, it is of its time and budget and should/would never be made in this day and age.

3D had better not be taking a big chunk of this budget, id much prefer a 2D movie made well than having a 3D gimmick "trying" to sell it to the masses.

I do agree it's unecessary with the 3D, especially since it has a low budget and they could use every penny to make the film look good and such.

Here's a fake poster for the movie:

Exactly.

If you have the right budget, 3D would be fine. In this case, it's working against it.

He is generally a good actor, he gave strong supporting turns in Bourne 2, Riddick, and LOTR and this was before Star Trek were he gave a great performance, a low budget sci-fi movie wont be the be all and end all for him.

I hope the same, if they are spending a lot on 3D its going to show in the movie, and so far unfortunately it has.

I still have my fingers crossed hat this movie will be good.
Sucks that it appears the Stallone movie managed to have the right look (and budget), while this one, not so much.

John Carpenter used to be able to do awesome **** with very little money. Escape From New York is a great example. The movie looked above and beyond its actual budget which was like $5 million. James Cameron did art design and visuals for it as well and he did some really keen stuff with it.

Thematically I see a lot of similarities with Escape/Dredd as well.

I'll want to see some footage first before I write it off. Hopefully it will look better on screen.

...and speaking of Cameron and limited budget, he did "The Terminator" with only $6 million!

I also want to mention "Dark City". That movie's budget was between $30 and $40 million, and look how crafty its special effects and its designs looked!

Lastly, look at "Serenity". It had the same budget that "Dredd" has. That one also looked fine.

Also..the team behind district 9 have shown what they can do with a "smaller" budget. Finger crossed they can pull it out the bag again, intact if it's half aswell produced as district 9 i'll be more than happy.

I'm not going to write this off until I see footage, I just hope I'm not setting myself up for a fall

^I am far from writing the movie off, but at this point nothing from the stills has impressed me, in the slightest, even the shot of Dredd himself I found a bit lacklustre.

Hopefully a trailer blows me away.

I'm of the same mind because at this point, I cant get over the fact that they are going with an 'Escape from New York/Mad Max' aesthetic as opposed to a staple '2000AD Mega-City' one. I know people will cite budgetary reasons for this but I dont agree - I think it's a conscious stylistic choice which may interest non-fans but may alienate reagular readers of Dredd. One of the things which made the characters world so cool to me was that everything was big, overblown and kind of absurd - massive, sprawling structures, huge and heavy vehicles with massive tyres, cyberpunks crims with massive boots and wild haircuts.

All we've seen so far is a Dredd costume that's been changed and, dare I say it, normal looking vehicles and set dressing.

What we've seen are spy pictures. Those hardly ever, ever, make justice as to how a movie will ultimately look. Look at how different the spy pictures and the official production stills of "Captain America" look. Same with "Conan The Barbarian".

...but yeah, official production stills and a teaser trailer can't get here soon enough.

I get what you're saying RT but it's totally different to the Cap spy pictures in that at least with Cap you knew that there wouldnt be a 'dumbing down' of Cap's world yet here all we've seen thus far is very ordinary and contemporary vehicles - vehicles, which in my mind, shouldnt be anywhere near Dredd's world. If that's indicative for any other aspect of the production, then I'll be dissappointed. I obviously dont need to remind you that Dredd's world has a certain aesthetic yet we are yet to see any examples of that, in fact all we can see is an attempt to move away from it.

I guess we'll see but I'm not holding my breath at this point. I've a sneaking suspision that this movie well well end up being closer in tone to the comics but visually, Stallones effort will still be the closest to how Mega City One etc is portrayed in the comics. And that's a very sad thing. My question would be - have they deliberately gone for the 'Mad Max' look or are they saying they never had the budget to do Mega City One justice? If it's the latter then it's criminal as they've given up before they've started.

I've said in the past that I'd rather not see Dredd done at all if it isnt done right, but know I find myself thinking I'd rather see a crappilly done Dredd movie that was at least faithfull to its origins and not afraid of what it is than something trying to pass itself off as something its not. Yes, I'm probably jumping the gun and I'll be the 1st on here to admit I was wrong if I'm proven otherwise - I so hope I'm wrong and we see some of the 'staple' stuff in the trailer.

I don't know if this was posted here due to my laptop not showing some images in this thread, so apologies if it has:

Is that the JD building in the background with the blue bars on the windows or is that just a production office?

>phew< I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks so.

My question would be this - why do they have vehicles that wouldnt look out of place on our roads right now now passing for vehicles of 2099 - 2133?

On the plus side, Robocop is currently the best Judge Dredd film we have.
