I expect, at the very least, to be huge in the foreign market. Godzilla is one of the longest running film franchises ever, and it's been ten years since the last one, and to top it off this year is the 60th anniversary of the series beginning. Even if, somehow it underperforms domestically, I'm pretty confident that it'll more than make up for it overseas.

Ill state first that I have no interest in this film but I see stuff about it on comic sites from time to time. My question is what is this movie expected to make WW? I see it being one of those films that 'underpreforms' or whatever I just can't see many people wanting to see Godzilla.

Sorry to come in and be negative haha. Carry on.

It's very possible that movie may underperform at the box office, especially in the US; though I think it will do decent in the foreign markets.
There's no doubt the hardcore Godzilla fans will see it, but will the general audience?

The reaction to the trailer and news has been pretty good so far.

It certainly stands a pretty good chance at doing well.

^ I think it will surprise people with how good this will do. It looks great, I think the general public will respond. Especially since he's such a well known commodity. I'm expecting at least WWZ kind of numbers.

I agree. Godzilla 98 made more money overseas than it did here in the US. I expect this one to do the same.

I'm gonna swim against the tide and say that Godzilla will perform pretty damn good. The tone and names attached to it are sure to bring in a lot of people.

Yeah, I think a lot of people are predicting big numbers for this.

Is it me or in every interview, Gareth tries to shy away from the fact that this will have awesome destruction shots.

Maybe he's just a modest humble guy, that how he comes off to me at least.

I have a pretty good feeling that Godzilla will bring in about the same as Pacific Rim. It has generally the same fan base and similar hype. What I think will be interesting is how Godzilla 98' will effect this film. Will it draw people who are curious that they got it right this time, or will Godzilla fans hold a grudge and be too skeptical that a good non Japanese made film can exist.

I think this movie has potential, with it seeming to focus on the military point of view it makes for a pretty dramatic set up. Instead of the silly and pun filled approach of 98, this movie looks like it is taking the serious tone of the original 54' film in mind. I am actually really excited.

Very likely yes they will see it, besides the general audience who has been around after the 1998 film, will be greatly curious in wanting to see if this Godzilla will be better than the 1998 film.

The leaks of the comic con trailer, the knowledge of the cast within this film, the dark atmosphere and tone, almost every scrap of news, and the official teaser trailer has drawn a very large interest from the general audience.

I've seen many non-Godzilla fans and people with little childhood experience with the icon wanting to see this film this year. And with Godzilla being a iconic franchise and monster, it's going to draw in more movie-goers.

The major question is, will this movie be marketed well enough to keep drawing in more people? Exposure is everything, too little and people won't know the film's existence and when they do, probably won't care enough to go see it. Too much exposure, and you might end up spoiling too much about the movie, or spend a little too much of your marketing budget.

If the 1998 film had one thing, it was huge marketing, and exposure of the icon was pretty massive due to channels running Godzilla marathons and airing movies as hype towards the film's release. If we can get some of that this year before the movie's release, I think things will be fine.

personally i think the name will carry it. with films like avengers and hobbit it proves there is a big general audience for this sort of fantasy movie

the main thing that will kill it is sadly a dredd style marketing campaign

This movie is gonna make bank. It's friggin Godzilla, are you kidding me? That's one of the biggest names in the history of movies.

I'm seeing more hype for this than I did for PR.

Plus there will likely be actual marketing for this, tie ins and such.

Plus it looks like they are actually making a toy line aimed at children rather than a small line of 30 dollar action figures and 300 dollar maquettes.

He comes off as very humble and honest. And given that this film looks like it's going to have some really insane state of the art sound effects, zeh boom boom will be insane. :woot:

Indeed. http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/bbts/search.aspx?search=godzilla+2014

I heard Mattel is going to do something with the film as well.

Godzilla kind of sells himself..........

I'd be shocked if this doesn't do well at the BO.

the story, characters, and effects would have to really suck or be really boring, and the movie critically panned, for it to really suffer at the BO.

I'm talking "1 star" bad kind of bad.

from what they've show so far....I don't really see that happening.

I mean........it's Godzilla!! The King of Monsters!!

And a drug free Olsen. People have been lacking their Olsen dose lately. That'll pull people in. :o

Any chance that Mattel re-envisions older monsters for the toyline?

A good looking Olsen too. And you can never go wrong with David Strathairn.

And Frank Darabont co-wrote the script along with Drew Pearce and David Goyer and a few others giving little script treatments!
